could you not just leave one nut and drop a weld onto the nut/bolt so it wont ever come loose and you can forget about it and then underseal ?

that was my other thought but didnt want to risk weakening the bolts in anyway mayby thats just being stupid tho

this may help a little as u can see the bolts go down thru plate then thru underside of car

on the under side of car i have excess thread poking past the nut

I would do as I said above is not going to weaken the bolt by just doing a decent spot weld.. Or you could have the thread end on inside of car ?

If your worried, use nyloc locknuts (or similar) and chop the rest off.
Out of interest, is there anything between the angle of the plates you have welded in (under the top 2 bolts in the pic) as that looks like you could crush the angle by doing the bolts up tight/they might settle over time and come loose. Im presuming you are going to weld ends onto the plates too judging by the way you still have your earth clamp on? Im also presuming you have something similar on the underside of the shell?

I think i will do as i said tech just put a spot weld on end

Doa theres nout in the gap but yes have welded ends on and have 3 mm plate under car to but is not welded in place which i think i may do aswell

I really, really hope you've done more to those mounts than that.

They need to be seam-welded around the edge and (as per DOA) have the sides filled in.

Mounts should be looking rather more like this:

Not like some hideous gobbed in off-cut.

Cut the excess thread off.  I would expect you to have captive nuts in there.  If you don't then you should have nylock nuts with a small quantity of thread out the other side.  Don't cut the thread with a grinder with the nylock on though, as the heat will melt the nylon out of the nut. losing the locking function.

measure the length fg bolt you need, cut to length and time ends,  then install them into car NUT up with nylocks

makes it easyer to release the cage should you ever have to and also bolt heads don't poke down as much as nuts

if you were been posh you would have built cage mounts up and had the nuts in the mouting point rather than under the car

i just used m8 bolts with nylon nuts on the bottom and some washers so the bolt dont pull th enut through the floor as its pretty thin , mines never come loose . no point in tackwelding them as it would only make life harder when it comes to undoing them :) ,

This attitude scares the sh*t out of me.

a cage should have proper feet/mounts not just be standing on the floor.  If you have a big one instead of protecting you it'll likely punch through the floor and collapse.

You should have plates on the underside of the car where the bolts go through, it spreads the stresses loads

why don't you forget about the bolts and weld the cage in?

I have never understood bolt in cages, do you remove them to do the school run or something? If a car is getting caged its usually because its a focused track car and isn't used for things that need a removable cage

only adavantage of a bolt in cage is you can unbolt it from the shell when straightening out accidental modifactions to the cars shell, to make things somewhat easyer,   still have to cut the cage up to get it out

use nyloc nuts or drill through the ones you have and use lockwire

dont really want to weld it in tho and it has been said on here as long as plates are welded in properly its just as strong

i will turn bolts round and nyloc them me thinks job done cage is coming out next week or so for a lick of paint so will do all the odds then
