6x4's although you're better off going for a huge sub + some decent front speakers run off an amp each ;D Sod the rear speakers! how often do you sit back there anyway ;)

Infinity Kappa's are nice. Have a set of 6x9's in my shelf and a set of 3.5" in the dash. Good sound all around.

if you build your own box as tall as the back seat and as wide as the boot you can get away with loosing minimual boot space and still get that tight bass you're after. run it with the subs facing the back if you know what I mean and the back of the box facing the back of the rear seats. then build 2 covers to 'square' off the boot. Will post pic of mine if you don't follow.

If you're going for two 10" subs I would follow Dizzie's advice, and look at running some amplified components up front, otherwise you are going to have a very rear based sound stage.

Definitely go for some replacement rears, but I would look at some straight forward custom fit replacements and power them from the head unit.

All middle of the road manufacturers (alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer etc) produce a range of custom fits, and your nearest decent audio shop will carry a bible (HUGE fitting guide) for each manufacturer and will be able to tell you which model will drop straight in.
