... The R has an average of 27-28mpg long term and can manage 33-34mpg on a run if I'm very careful.

Agree with this.

Just got back from Hartlepool - 35 miles, maintaining 80mph up the A19 for most of the journey. The car was doing a steady 28mpg doing 80, once driving through the town's 30/40 roads, I saw some recovery in mpg up to the endpoint of 30.5mpg.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

My prev. Golf is a remapped MK 6 GTI. It can easily do 340miles without much effort. With my bog standard R, I struggle with 320miles after each fill-up even my car had already done 13000miles. I spend most time in eco mode with the odd time in RACE. I never use normal and I leave the stop-start on all the time. I also find the car use less petrol following a micra/i10 in town then doing 80+mph on a private motorway. My very best I can squeeze out of my R is around 36.8mpg/360miles when I had to fill up again with Shell superunleaded.

I did my regular Sunday economy run (taxi service for sons) on rural 40 and NSL roads today.
My 8v old skool GTI does 40mpg on that run.
My MK7 GTI between 36 - 39 mpg depending on what mood it was in.
Nice sunny day and stuck behind a dawdling Toyota granny mobile on the way back I got 33mpg average.

I'm exactly the same as this as well in my R.  I use Tesco Momentum 99.  As an aside, the R will run on 95 (obviously) but on the cap VW suggest 98 or higher.  Tesco 99 gives the best fuel consumption and power IMO, and I've tested all the higher octane fuels.

GTI figures: I used to get 32 long term, 38 on a run if careful.

No opportunity to put my foot down today, so it was nun-like driving, following the herd. 19C ambient temp, aircon on 18C with recycle and it was 36mpg on my 20 mile commute home.

32mpg is far more fun though.

Likewise!

My R has now passed the 1000 mile mark and I'm starting to explore what it can do a bit more now.
Have any other R owners noticed a tendency for the inner rear wheel to brake on a fast but sharp corner, almost like the car is using that wheel as a pivot rather than powering the car around? These are the sort of corners the PP GTI would just dig in and blast round but the R seems less happy.
No, I'm not going to blame the Bridgestones!!!
