Title: Jacara
Post by: Mutley75 on 19 January 2019, 13:48
Having placed my order and showed the mrs what her new kitchen fund has purchased instead, her first reaction was ‘Can you live with those seats?’  To which I replied ‘WTF?!’  ‘They’re hideous!’ She says. I responded ‘Sacrilege! Tartan is part of the GTI heritage!’  Anyway it then occurred to me how Marmite the Jacara seats actually are. Personally I quite like them. The leather is ludicrously expensive on the Golf so that was never an option. Nor was £750 for Art Velors, my limited options budget went on wheels and DynAudio instead.

So anyway just for a bit of fun I thought I’d put up a poll to see what owners actually think of Jacara. I’m guessing most wives/girlfriends hate it but the bloke in general like it?

They divide opinion, we must have a thread on here every few months about it.

Personally I quite like them, and would never order leather out of principle as the cost is ridiculous IMO. The art velours is a good compromise for those that can't live with the Jacara, but I think even that is a little overpriced.

We both loved the tartan - I had leather on many cars before the GTI but didn't even think about 'upgrading'

Yeah I did a search before posting. I couldn’t find a poll on the topic so thought it might be interesting to see what the split of opinion is.

I quite like Jacara, but it does divide opinion, so I'd never spec it. If it was just me (and no kids) I'd probably go Art Velour, but I went leather for 3 reasons:

1. 2 young kids means I wanted something wipeable and resistant to their grime.
2. To have the electric driver's seat you have to spec leather.
3. The red detailing in the leather gives the cabin a touch of class.

Leather for BMWs, tartan for the GTI. The retro/modern styling is brilliant, imo.
The history is interesting-

Personally had GTI Jacara and recently the GTD Jacara (minus red colour accent) before and this time round fancied a change. Having seen and tried a mates new 7.5 GTD with Art Velour, I went with this as like the way hexagonal pattern mirrored other trim inserts outside and inside the car as well as the red lines for the door access lights in the GTI (same colour).

Still cleanable like microfibre/alcantara, but kids occasionally in the car.  My BMW is leather as no cost on the 335D and would have specced it anyway as believe the leather quality is better in the BMW than VW version, having had it before on a MK5 GT TDI 170 years ago, and it sagged and lost shape very quickly and also suffered some paint peel/colour fade as well, which hopefully doesn't happen these days?

So in the main the standard Jacara is a good option and lived with it for many years and lifts the cabin a lot. If you are like me and love VW cars GTI/GTD/R etc then you could eventually sample all the flavours anyway...

That's my thought's anyway

Jacara is the best cloth option of any car. It’s iconic. My edition 35 had leather and my wife asked where the tartan was as she prefers it.

Some friends of mine would get in and you could see their surprise at the tartan, but they drive mpvs so clearly have no taste.

The tartan really adds some character to the cabin, I love it. The MK7.5 perforated leather looks pretty good but I don't think the quality is there anymore, my A4 had really good leather, plus quite a few areas of 'leather' isn't actually leather which isn't reflected in the cost imo.

Runningman- good point re leather quality- just sold my 335d after 9 years ownership- leathers looked as good as new, vw golf leathers don’t age nearly as well

King monkey- taste didn’t come into it when I bought my alhambra- just gotta get 4 kids and gear from one place to another!

I didn’t upgrade due to funds but also because this was my first GTI and I thought I’d give the tartan a go. If I ever get another GTI I will be upgrading to Art Velours just for the faux leather (wipe clean) door cards and arm rest.

If they did a part leather option with tartan seats and faux leather bolsters then that would be perfect because I do actually like the tartan pattern.

Nothing wrong with the jacara. On my mark 2 GTI (1990 ) it was a material interior never had any issues the car was my 1st back in 2000 ( 10 years old at the time )and it was a mark 2, when it was 14 years old the material still looked good

I've never had any Volkswagen before and although my GTI PP was bought 2nd hand I was unsure about the tartan when deciding to buy it or not, but now if I was to buy new it's the one I would go for

I know it's not tartan, but the 'Rainbow' cloth on my 1990 Mk2 still looks brand new. That's 29 years old now.

Definitely a bit marmite!

I love it. And the matching key ring..

That said, I actually think both the other interior options are good as well and would have any of them, especially the Art Velours.

I really like the tartan but I think the quality and appearance was a bit better in the MK5 and 6. Not to mention the seats looked nicer / more bespoke in those cars with the integrated head rests.

I think the material on the bolsters, sides of the seats and door cards lets it all down a bit. It feels a bit nasty and from what I’ve seen it stains and wears badly.

The perfect combo was something I optioned in a MK7 back in 2013, half alcantara / leather (on bolsters, door cards) with the tartan centres. No longer an option now.

That's a really good point JoeGTI and hog_hedge, the fabric bolsters and door cards can mark quite easily can't they if you're not careful. The standard seats in the Clubsport have leatherette there instead, but unfortunately lose the tartan.

You could always get custom made seats like these which look incredible! The best of both worlds, although, I'm sure I can spy a fabric armrest!

Have to agree with you Joe, VW haven't tried very hard with the seats in the Mk7 / Mk7.5. The Mk5 & Mk6 seats were nicer.

In fact i'd say I preferred the seats in my Octy vRS to those in my Golf. They were a bit more comfortable too.

There’s a certain purity with the Jacara seats in the GTI.
I had the tartan seats in my mk5 and first mk6 GTI and loved them.
I had leather in my second mk6 (it was an Ex-demo) which I grew to like but had no hesitation in speccing Jacara for my 2013 GTI PP.
When collecting the car and sitting in the tartan cloth seats it felt a bit of a homecoming.

The mk7 sports seats are nice enough but the mk5 GTI seats were sublime.
Cost cutting.

I find I like some variations of the Clark Plaid but not others. I would personally go for Art Velours. My wife has a MKVII GTD and she likes the monochrome plaid but like myself, prefers some versions of Clark Plaid to others. Some are too loud and busy.

I think the Clubsport S seats are the best they produced.

When I was looking to buy a GTi my 19 &17yr old daughters though the tartan seats where awful - now I’ve got one they both love them, even the Mrs likes them which is a 1st for any of my cars .

They just look right to me.

Had the monochrome Jacaranda on my previous 2 GTD’s and loved them. With the new GTI however, I fancied a change, and couldn’t afford (wanted to pay), the cost of full leather, so went for Art Velours as a middle ground, and absolutely love them, and gets quite a few comments from people travelling in the car.

Like some on here I'm not really a fan of tartan so I went for art velour. Yes it's overpriced but it's compromise I was willing to make. Imo it really smartens up the interior. Not a fan of full leather and VWs asking price is insane.

Agree on the CS buckets. Best ever seat in a Golf.

TCR looks nice though...

I love em.

From looking at pics before hand my Mrs thought they looked cheap. However once the car arrived she was really impressed with them.
