Title: pedestrian avoidance
Post by: nigeldodd on 18 April 2018, 16:08
In this https://youtu.be/3VwgvIqXg3A Clarkson says that the Golf GTI gets a lower insurance premium because it has a pedestrian avoidance system.

I have been struggling to get any pedestrians to volunteer for a double blind test of this feature. Can somebody please tell me if the current mk7.5gtiPp has a pedestrian avoidance system?

It does have it... I've never seen it activate. Its part of Front Assist.

On the standard features list in the configurator its listed as "Predictive Pedestrian Protection"

Does it work? No idea, i've never seen it trigger yet. It almost certainly only works at low city speeds so take that in mind before you run over your wife :D (or maybe not...)

Its made by Bosch (of course), here is their video:

Note the 30kmh speed!

What exactly does front assist do?

I’ve had the warning message pop up once or twice when I’ve braked late. Then there’s the pedestrian avoidance at low speed.

Will it do anything else? E.g. brake to avoid a high speed collision?

It will restart the engine in traffic when the car in front moves away from a standstill.

Ah yeah forgot about that. And it obviously controls the adaptive cruise control which amazed me the first time I used it.

Hopefully won't have it activate when mine comes. It's mental the amount of people that I see walking onto busy roads glued to their phones with earphones in too.

There are two different technologies on the front of your car.

Front assist and city braking. Not the same sensor, one is radar the other ultrasonic.

At which point said pedestrian or wife needs a change of underwear.

Impressive though.

Can't find it. I have Driver Assistance Settings/Proactive Occupant   - but nothing to do with pedestrians.

Have I got the murderous vehicle option?

I think it’s just part of the acc, whereas passenger protection is a option

If front assist is active, its all part of that. Not a specific option to be enabled.

OK I understand now that there is no explicit option to enable the running over of pedestrians.

It does and it works!!
A few weeks ago I pulled out of a parking space onto a busy road (parking on both sides). I first checked in front then looked over my shoulder before pulling out to nip across lanes (I was parked on the 'wrong' side). As I accelerated across lanes a woman strode out from between 2 parked cars and I had that 'oh sh**' moment. I just couldn't have reacted in time, but then I felt the abs pumping and the car came to a controlled stop inches from the woman. I don't know about her, but I nearly had an accident in my pants!! Totally surreal and amazing experience, but I hope it NEVER happens again!

Well that's one lady who can thank VW!

I can also confirm the rear assist works too !

My new GTI has this (as well as side assist and lane assist), and I've only had it a week and a couple of days ago, I was reversing off my driveway, which on the passenger side is surrounded by relatively high greenery. OK I was only going slow, but as the back end of my car nosed off the drive into the cul-de-sac, my next door neighbours 5 year old suddenly ran out behind the car chasing a ball. A saw him briefly in the rear view camera and the sensors immediately beeped, but in a split second before I could react, the car slammed on the brakes and stopped the car whilst I still had my foot on the accelerator pedal and certainly not on the brake pedal.

Pretty impressive really, although it was still a heart in the mouth moment, and it didn't stop him from getting a right boll*cking from his dad, who thanked me for being so careful  ;D

Sooty - that's just because you have manoeuvre braking turned on - its working from the parking sensors.

I said on here before, there is a friend's drive I reverse off of regularly that is a steep slope down to the road - you can to push the parking mode button to disable it otherwise it brakes when it sees the road! Kinda dangerous when you are trying to reverse onto a main road! Used to it now :D

The GTD has it tested it once with a stack of cardboard boxes very surprised how late it brakes and stops the car. Have noticed the rear sensors get confused by the steep driveway and slam the brakes on thinking they’re going to hit an imaginary object.

This sort of technology goes against nature.  Let Darwinism run its course.

I'd agree but only if I was guaranteed not to be the one mowing down the undesirables. My car has had far too much respraying already

Both my cars have this feature; a 16 plate Audi A4 (being replaced by a Golf GTI PP DSG next month!!), and a 17 plate VW Touran.

My Audi gets caught out by sudden changes in the slope on roads, causing the brakes to cut in briefly. Sometimes this just happens with no audible warning. The car also bleeps at me if I approach a bend where a car might be parked on a side road. It thinks I am heading for the parked car, beeps, and then cancels the warning as I follow the curve of the road and the parked car disappears from sight.

However, I have had one really scary experience. Driving on a country road, I rounded a corner where there is a lay-by on the left. A coach was parked in the lay-by, and my A4 clearly thought it was a solid wall or something. The car pinged, I kept on driving as I had no intention of crashing into a bus parked off the side of the road in a lay-by. However, I think the radar continued to sweep along the side of the large coach as I was rounding the bend. This convinced the car that I was asleep at the wheel and destined to crash, so it applied a full emergency stop.

There was nothing I could do. I stayed in my lane on the road, with the bus entirely off the road in the lay-by to my left. The car screeched to a halt, and thankfully the woman behind me was far enough back to stop without rear-ending me.

Lord knows what the drivers behind thought! The bus driver was out in front of the bus, stood in the lay-by. He looked at me like I was deranged.

I took it to my Audi dealer, and they applied a software patch to the AEB system. It still pings, and snatches at the brakes from time to time. But, thankfully, no full emergency stops since.

I have only had one pedestrian step out in front of me. The car snatched at the brakes for a moment, then the pedestrian jumped back onto to the pavement.

Yeah I had numerous false alarms on my old 14 plate GTD. A couple that resulted in full emergency braking - not quite sure how I didn't get rear ended in any of those. Certainly caused a lot of arm waving and shouting by people behind me... who as well experienced drivers are looking beyond me to look for possible reasons for me taking evasive action... and not seeing any.

Touch wood, the 7.5 seems to have improved on the system a bit and so far in almost a year and 20k I've not had any of those full brake situations.
