The AAM/ABS engine is very simple luckily.
It only has a hall sender in the distributor, unlike this is at fault.
Does the rev counter jitter when you crank it?
If not check the rpm in the measuring blocks of the ECU with a diagnostic tool, such as VCDS. If you get revs there it's not the hall sender.
Usual suspects are the coil and the monomotronic (or it's peripherals) or worst case the cam belt has snapped (only an issue on the ABS, not the AAM).
I'd remove coil and visually inspect it for cracks.
If that's all not turning anything up then it's more likely related to the monomotronic unit. Report back if the above yields no results then I can go on about the mono.
