i do alot of miles a week and reason behine giving up mk3 gti and getting a mk4 tdi
i read alot of people say onlt 18's will do on a mk4 but does it make the car tram line? like my 17's on my old mk3
i really want porsche alloys on it but 18's cost the earth while 17's arent to bad on the pocket
also tyres on an 18 will cost a bit more
so what eveyone think?
and yes at some point i will b lowering it so 17's might look ok, i just after something a bit different well a wee bit different.
cheers

we have this dilemma at the moment, our car came with TT 18"s but we sold them and put on 16" GTI alloys, as they were a bit too kerbed.
Anyway, we would like bigger, smarter alloys again, but Im not sure about 18s, the Mrs thinks they look chavvy, our roads are really poor and bumpy, im thinking 17"s might look a bit more classy and grown up. And a bit less like a silvercross pram....

+1 for 17"s.
Imo, the perfect size for mk3 is 16" both for looks and decent drive, but for mk4 17", because it's a bit bigger car, so 16's wouldn't look so good, and 17's won't make it tramline.

My dad had 17's on his for a little while and they looked really lost in the arches, then he fitted 18" Merc wheels and they fill the arches nicely, looks awesome

For looks: 18"
For comfort: 16"
For compromise: 17" but you won't ever look as good as 18" or be as comfy as 16" alloys.

I've got 18" s on mine and they don't tramline at all, infact I wish I'd gone for 19's but the tyres are really steep. The right choice of 17" wheel will still look good, esp if you space them out to fill the arches a bit.

well i got drunk last sat night and seemed to have talked myself into getting 18's lol off to new castle to pick them up , not porsche as i wanted but at mo they will do, got anni front valance and side skirts going off to be painted and saving for suspension and bushes once money saved all will hit the car at once for a drastic change.
now lol just got to decide to keep it or trade for other golf mk4 lol(3dr)
