Title: Welly cooler behind standard bumper
Post by: Jin_C on 06 June 2013, 11:06
Hi all,

Has anyone fitted a 'welly cooler' behind a standard bumper with anni valance? Of all the build threads I have seen people have fitted them behind a R32 bumper. If so could you provide pics please. I am hoping to fit one week after next.

I was thinking of getting the 2.5" inlet and outlet version since it wouldn't require the reducers to fit to the pipe work and the core is also thinner so there is a better chance of it fitting without having to remove the side grilles.

This is the 'welly cooler' I am referring to http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FMIC-FFRONT-MOUNT-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-TYPE-B-600x300x76MM-/200484166200?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eadc99a38 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FMIC-FFRONT-MOUNT-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-TYPE-B-600x300x76MM-/200484166200?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eadc99a38)

This is the slightly smaller 2.5" version http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-KIT-DRAG-RACE-FRONT-MOUNT-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-/400159814481?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d2b623351 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-KIT-DRAG-RACE-FRONT-MOUNT-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-/400159814481?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d2b623351)

Thanks

Tbh with you depending what your aiming for either will be fine I am putting a hybrid which can flow 300 on mine and will be using the welly cooler r32 bumper combo just avoid heat soak tje small you go Yeh quicker the heat soak so what power you after?

Go for the smaller cooler = hotter air to intake = give mine a chance against yours

You will need to cut quite alot out to make it fit behind a standerd bumper ,

I still had to cut a little out my r32 to get the pipes to fit!

Go big or go home  :lipsrsealed:

Haha brilliant replies, thanks guys.

My current situation is currently go big go broke!

I currently have a k03s running 208bhp peak due to weak actuator (Which has now been replaced with forge one) and SMIC.

I am thinking I would like to get the most out of current setup without going to 3" MAF and injectors. However I do keep on reading through the hybrid thread so that is a possibility for the future. But I will definitely not be going over 300 since I don't want to be spending money on rods.

Rio, my next mod after FMIC will be water/meth injection so that should help me keep up with you.

Granta, I would be very grateful if you take pics. Also where abouts are you, I could come and help to give me an idea about the job at hand.

So my understanding is that it is not impossible however lots of cutting is required. Is that correct? Would the bumper still be securely fitted i.e. it wont lose major structural integrity.

But tbh I can do a good impression of a helecopter   :lipsrsealed:

Also I don't drive fast as I don't like high speeds!!! It's just after my remap I changed more bits so it runs a but rough so I thought I would go stage 2 but on a k03 it's not worth it!! Could have put a k03s on it........

Granta all k03 golf owners are counting on you here!

We all want intercoolers behind our bumpers without looking like chavs!

No pressure!

Not finished yet chaps and not allowed to work on it today because its at work on a ramp and mrs said no! So will be going in really early tommorow to get it done. It is a lot of trimming to be done dont get me wrong but it will go. I have had to cut a lot of the side vent holes, and radiator cowling to get it fit snug. My aim at the moment is to get it running again so will have to trim the side and centre grills later so will look chavy! I think I messed up on my order from ash though  my pipes don't quite meet up on my hot side, cold side will be fine so might have to drag it out during the week and order more stuff but will keep you posted.

I need vagcom data of how cool the intake is last thing I want will be heat soak at over 300bhp otherwise I am still getting the welly cooler and doing it the same as Rio
Title: Re: Welly cooler behind standard bumper
Post by: Granta Gti on 09 June 2013, 12:04
Rio has data of before it was fitted on his car, can't do it on mine as he ripped out all my old pipe work yesterday! If your all standard we could do it on the day on the same route therefore the outside temp will be the same.

Hope this gives you an idea of what needs doing and give yourself a weekend to do it and make sure you have permission from the mrs! I think an r32 bumper will require less cutting..

I'm sorry just couldn't help myself had to get stuck in!!!!
We will do a run with all 3 cars to see the difference as when I done my test with the standard sm and then the big fm it was 3 months later!!!

Standard - 36 degrees c
Fmic - 12 degrees c

Would be good to see the results all on the same day

This is looking great chaps. Mine pulled 42'c yesterday trying to get maximum MAF figures. Took ages to try to get them back down to 18'c that I started with.

+1 last FMIC I bought was a THS performance one at £500 for my last golf. I don't really want to buy another at that price so will be good to see what the finish comes out like!

Right lads all fitted and car driving again. Feels a bit more torquey and quite happy tbh. Had to chop quite a bit of the bumper but did not have to cut any parts of it off which I did not want to. The vents will go back some point this week once they have been trimmed, they might need glueing in or some self tapers to secure them then that should put it back to the oem look !

What size are the inlet/outlets?

I mocked up my 700x300x76mm wellycooler with 3" in/outs and not a chance would a stock bumper go on.

Ins and outs are 63mm (2 1/2) and just about fit. I have the smaller welly cooler.  The link is on the first page.

Granta, where did you get the brackets from or what did you use to make them?

Also, which hoses did you use to connect the hot and cold sides? I am going to be using the list that Rio has put up but I am assuming the connections to the IC will be different since it is narrower than the larger one.

Thanks

They are just pipes that I flattened and drilled holes through so the still have a little bit of flex. Will see if I have any pics of them. Bass mine on rios so you will be fine. I think his has 3" in and outs.

All fitted mate will get some pics of it fitted when I take them. All that's left to do is swap a red pipe for a black one and trim the grills so they fit into the bumper.

Finished trimming the bumper grills and all fitted now an actually really pleased with it all, the pipe work is barely visible.

Comments welcome.

I'd be slightly wary about the silicone pipes touching the cut bumper, is it a sharp edge? Persistent vibration could cause it to wear through...
Title: Re: Welly cooler behind standard bumper
Post by: Granta Gti on 25 June 2013, 20:29
Ya it is a bit close, but all edges are smooth. Bumper will be coming off next time I hve it on a ramp and will cut a bit more round the pipes. Ideally want a r32 front bumper and try hide all the pipes.

I just wanted to say thanks for the info in this thread. I know it's old but it really helped me out. I bought the toyosports kit which has a tiny intercooler 420mmx160mmx65mm but also has all the more valuable pipework for the PD130 that I needed.

I'm going to stick with this for a while and maybe move up to the medium sized 550mmx220mm wellycooler one day.

Figures: Running at @1.7mbar boost

Uprated side mount intercooler ambient temp 11ºc hard run hitting 60ºc plus (ran out of road) took ages to cool down settling at 21ºc

FMIC 15ºc ambient temp hard runs hitting 40ºc cooling quickly to just above ambient. Then 22ºc ambient temp last little heat wave I hit 50ºc but this was really battering it for a long time. Cooled quickly to a few degrees above ambient again.

Not sure how much of a difference petrol and diesel cars are regarding intake temps but I thought I'd share anyway.

Thanks again!
