Title: MK7 changes
Post by: Jeni_R_ on 16 January 2018, 11:47
most probably a ridiculous question BUT

1. Can you change the dash on 2016 MK7 GTD to the digital one
2. Can you upgrade the MIB unit to the larger screen

OR is it cheaper to buy a new car with these already installed

Technically it will be possible, however this won't come cheap. You can expect it to cost at least £1k for the new head unit alone, plus the cost of the new digital instrument binnacle, plus labour.

By the time you've done all that you won't be far off the price of changing the car for one with them already fitted. A newer car would also have the swoopy rear lights that you crave.

I might be wrong, but i'm not sure if you can do job 1 without doing job 2.

You answered your question more or less yourself.
Digital speedo would be a no even I'd guess. You could ask Alex Szaniawski (Alex Retrofit in Redditch) if he can do it, but don't think it can be done.

Larger screen can be fitted - IF you already have the MIB2 discover pro, generation 1 would need full replacement for $$$$.
Gen 2 will also need a full replacement if you want the pro nav features but for screen only you can fit the larger one relatively easily.

I had a sneaky feeling this would be the case but thought i would ask those in the know thanks Guzzle

Put a typo in... if you have MIB2 standard nav you can fit the pro screen as it is the same resolution and this is plug and play (obviously all the trim etc will need to be changed) so it's only $$$ not $$$$ it would be for replacing it with pro nav.

For clarity, MIB1 has lower resolution on the standard nav, if you fit pro screen it just fills a portion of screen with a large black border around it.

You can tell which generation it is by screen size (details on VW map update page - http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/maps/int/en/index.html)

Most of the electronic retro fit projects end up with costs so great that you might as well sell your car and get one with the bits on it.. Unless money is no object and its just for sh!ts and giggles... You'll never see that money back in residual value and you can't even rip your extras out if you sell...

When I was looking for my car in the autumn there was a MK7 for sale with a MK 7.5 virtual dash fitted. A quick Google found these guys https://www.facebook.com/cartechuk/. I would imagine it won't be cheap though, and if the car is still under warranty I don't think VW would offer any help if you have ANY electrical gremlins in the future.

So it sounds like if you have mib2 you can retro fit the newer display.

I suspect that even with a navpro mib2 you won't get the dual map display though....

In fact, will it even display the map on the AID at all?
Title: Re: MK7 changes
Post by: Vwjap on 16 January 2018, 16:59
Dual map is pro only as I understand, on the normal nav you with have it on the MIB or the AID

Post by: fredgroves on 16 January 2018, 17:05
Yes but the Mk7.5 NavPro unit is a totally different (more powerful) version of the MIB and different to the Mk7 MIB2 NavPro...
Title: Re: MK7 changes
Post by: mcmaddy on 16 January 2018, 18:02
I doubt it's that different to be honest Fred. It's probably only an updated screen.
Title: Re: MK7 changes
Post by: fredgroves on 16 January 2018, 19:18
Driving a much higher resolution screen. The 7.5 standard nav is basically the old nav pro hardware and that can't run dual map outputs due to processing limitations

TFT screen appears to be the only difference that I can find. Resolution is the same but then again two different sites quoted two different specs
Title: Re: MK7 changes
Post by: fredgroves on 17 January 2018, 09:20
Resolution definitely isn't the same - the new NavPro is widescreen!

Its 1280 x 640 compared to the previous 8" 800 x 480.

In terms of desktop computers, the difference in powering that is nothing, but the computer in your car is not a desktop PC running the latest top end Intel processor, its the smallest processor that they can get away with.

When you have the map on the AID, you can have a different view to the one on the MIB as well - so it is actually generating twice the output too.

Its really hard to find the actual manufacturer of the MIB unit and read their tech specs sadly.

Most VW units were made by continental but not sure on these newer ones. Just found a page that confirms your specs Fred on the screen. I'd still be amazed if the actual brain in the glovebox has changed much.
Title: Re: MK7 changes
Post by: fredgroves on 17 January 2018, 09:39
I forgot that the actual unit is in the glovebox.

I guess the simple way of determining if they are different then is to see if the VW part number is different... I've no idea how to do that mind you.
