Shortening Gear stick (DONE :D)
« on: 01 September 2011, 15:31 »
Hi was thinking about shortening my gear stick, would this make the gear changes quicker/shorter? Or can that only be done by adding a short shift?

Also am i right in thining if i cut too much off it may slip out of gears?

Was thinking maybe just over 1" off?

What you think?

Thanks

UPDATE: Just done it only taking just over an inch off but it makes a difference. Very happy with it just need to wait for it too cool down then i might have a look at maybe cutting another 0.5" off.

Shortening the throw (travel) is done by fitting a short shifter

Shortening it in height is done like my mate Kris has just done on his Fabia

does it make any difference or is it more for looks? :undecided:

edit: just read it and he says it made a little bit of difference. Just thought its cheaper then buying a short shifter for the moment lol

It will slightly reduce throw as it's decreasing the distance from the knob to the pivoting point.

I have seen others using Audi TT linkages to reduce it further.

I've not done it mate. But if you do decide to use a hacksaw, get a fine blade (more teeth) for a clean cut.
