yeah either mk2 or mk3 would fit, I'd stick to all MK3 parts since thats what the coilover kit was designed for :)
edit: just to add that pic is a MK2 strut, MK3 looks a wee bit different. Parts from 8 down will be all part of the coilovers, 7 is the top mount which is the bit on the MK3 that differs.  In fact I'll stop failing to describe what I mean well and just post a pic

Funnily enough, i fitted some 'Mk3' springs to my mrs' TDi earlier this year and the bit labelled 26 in the diagram was too small and it worked loose and fell into the spring coil. Last night, i stripped them down and used some Mk2 spring 'caps', (the bit the top of the coil sits on), and rubber tops. these bolted straight in. I used the extreme top part from the Mk3, (labelled 23), and it all went together fine. Hope that helps, if you can understand my terms!!!!

yeah the earlier/non gti mk3s actually have MK2 strut setups!

edit: ah bugger, I just realised you said 'coils' not 'coilovers'!  Do you know what model MK3 they were originally designed for?

Hey.

The car is a 1991 mk2 16v GTI.
it's fitted with 96 VR6 subframes and brakes.
The coilovers are meant for a Vr6 and the car is running an ABF.
The top caps I've used are the mk3 ones which are leaving quite a bit of slack at the top and I'd like to get rid of this so i was thinking that maybe the rubber bush bits are a bit longer on the mk2 or maybe the top cap is a bit deeper which would take up some slack on it.

thanks for the help lol.

ok do you mean the bits that stick up above the shock towers into the engine bay, with the plastic covers on?
