Yeah, that one was posted up a few days ago Fred.
The PR woman was annoying in that her whole monologue was like a boardroom presentation, a bit of corporate insistence in that everything was wonderful and anyone in the meeting who even looked like they might disagree would be immediately fired.
Ten out of ten for her not barfing on zee-zee though
So, the mk8 isn’t a 7 facelift? Wrong! Go check out a silhouette photo of both please Ms PR paying attention to the bonnet, screen and roofline. Same basic shell and chassis.
It is far more heavily reworked than 7 to 7.5 I’ll agree, so we will go with re-engineered rather than “whole new car”
Oh, and she would never go back to real buttons? Hmmm...
I just watched the Harry’s garage vid this morning.
Having read the impressions others here got from the video it was interesting going in with my own preconceptions from those posts.
Wealthy old guy with decades of experience and a garage full of analogue supercars meets new generation Golf R with smartphone interior.
Actually I think he nailed it.
As a trainee old guy myself I don’t tend to actually watch much of his stuff but he’s very intelligent and switched on. He covers everything from classics to ultra expensive exotica from what I have seen but not much of it interests me so I don’t tend to tune in often.
But he has a huge ‘following’ I would imagine, mostly of the pistonheads/Evo types, so his audience would definitely relate to all of that.
With familiarity, just like with a smartphone, you get used to the UI but it doesn’t ever necessarily become fully intuitive as far as certain things go. Even picking up someone with a near identical smartphone’s phone but with all their app widgets in different places to mine I find hugely difficult to navigate quickly.
With so much technology packed into these cars it’s a designer’s nightmare/wet dream to create a non-distracting and easy to navigate UI when the management board have told them there will be minimal physical buttons.
Aside from that I think Harry loved driving the car.
He’s got a garage full of exotica to excite him when he has time to indulge but if he had to have a one or two car garage what’s the betting he’d have a Golf R sat in there?
