Title: GTI Incoming
Post by: Colh on 21 April 2021, 20:48
I’ve only gone and bought myself a new GTI.  Should get it in the next week.  Reflex Silver with Winter Pack and rear view camera.

Sadly means losing my MK7.5 black GTI.

Anyone else got one in silver?

Reflex is a great colour for the mk8. I had a hard time choosing between that and moonstone but Mrs G cast the final vote.

Are you getting dsg or manual?

I don't think I've heard of anyone with manual on here yet.

DSG.  Dealer said there’s no manuals coming into the UK unless they’re a factory order.  My first auto.  Hope it’s good

I popped down to my local Vw last week and Reflex was one of the standout colours for me. Good choice.

Silver looks superb on them. My brother in law collected a new R Line in reflex silver last week. It really does look superb. Suits the lines of the car well. Check out volkswizard on YouTube, he has a silver CS. Not mad on his wheels choice though.

I thought it actually looks even better in the flesh than photos or video actually.

The black bits and the rear tints really stand out, it's a lovely colour.

I have a new GTI on the way too, it's Black Pearl metallic, fitted with Adelaide alloys, Sports Suspension and Winter pack. Here's a pic of it taken yesterday, still in its wrapping paper, inside the dealer's compound.

It's sitting slightly higher than it should be because I believe that, during transportation, the suspension has blocks inserted. I have no idea why. Can anyone throw some light?

Hopefully, I should have it on the road next week, after it's been fully prepped and checked out for the latest software.

VW fit plastic transit pucks to the front suspension struts to stop the car bouncing around when it’s in transit, so that probably means the the front suspension can’t settle until those pucks have been removed. I think the tyres are also over inflated when cars leave the factory so they don’t develop flat spots if those cars are left parked up in a compound for a prolonged period.

With early deliveries of the first mk7 Golfs, there were quite a few instances of the transit pucks not being removed when cars were PDI’d. Owners whose cars didn’t have the pucks removed complained of a rock hard, uncompromising ride. Not read of any instances of this happening with the mk8.

Bet you can't wait to get your hands on it.  The black looks amazing.  Had a MK6 GTD and my MK7.5 GTI in deep pearl black.  Hoping the silver is a bit easier to maintain (i.e. doesn't need as much cleaning )

Yes, I had mixed feelings about buying a black car, I've owned several in the past and they are always a real pain to keep clean. White or Silver, in my experience, is much easier to keep on top off.

In fact, I told the dealer that I wasn't that keen on black but he said that's all we have at the moment and, if you don't like it, we'll source something else for you. But, the crafty sod knew what he was doing because, as soon as I laid my eyes on it, that was it. It was pure love... or lust!  It helped, too, that I got such a marvellous deal and they have also offered to Supagard, free of charge, which might help.

As you say, I can't wait to get behind the wheel next week.

Congrats on the new car.  Not sure I would want a dealer applying a coating, though.  Especially on a black car.  Personally, I would advise telling them to leave it and using some of the cash saved to have a proper detailer ceramic coat it.  A dealer won't spend the time to provide anywhere near the required level of care in the preparation of the paint to receive the coating and will very likely do more harm to the paint than the coating will save.

100% agree with this. I wouldn’t let a dealer apply a paint protection product to my car, even if they were doing it for free. The dealer won’t do any of the required prep work - they’re likely to just do a single bucket wash with a sponge, dry off with a wash leather and slap on the Superguard product.

To do the job properly probably takes 2+ days. The dealer will spend no more than a couple of hours doing it.

Normally, I'd agree with you gents but my dealership knows my standards and I trust them too. The job is going to take 2 days, which is why I'm not taking delivery until the middle of next week. I did think about going the full hog and applying ceramic but it's because I trust them, and I have heard so many alarming reports about "spotting" with ceramic finish that I decided to go down the dealer route.

BTW, this dealership used the same treatment on my Tornado Red 7.5 GTI and, even when the car was over two years old, I had "experts" asking if I had just had it waxed, and my local foam car valeter never ceased to be amazed at how good the finish looked after he had hosed off the foam.  He never once needed to apply any wax in 2.5 years.

I hope, though, my trust is not misplaced.

Just had a call from the dealers

The car I “bought” had also been sold by another dealer, so they’re now offering me a different motor:

Original: Reflex Silver, DSG, Winter Pack, Reversing camera
Offer: Dolphin Grey DSG, Winter Pack, Digital Key, Heads Up Display

For about £8 a month more.

Digital key useless as only works on Android phones, and not bothered by HUD

Not keen on dolphin grey from the photos I’ve seen on auto trader either, so might be no new motor for now  :undecided:
Title: Re: GTI Incoming
Post by: fredgroves on 23 April 2021, 14:46
Thats no fun

I'd pass, particularly on Dolphin Grey - i know some probably love it but not me.

Digital key is useless, HUD is really only useful for mile munchers (like me in the "normal world")

But yes, Digital key+HUD is more money than Reversing Camera.

Yeah, going to pass.

Interestingly, I had a similar situation when I got my 7.5 GTI.  They sold me a factory order the day after VW stopped selling the standard GTIs (perf pack only).  Thankfully after some dramas they managed to source one outside of their group.

Snap!

I've had the car over a month now - fabulous to drive and no s/w issues apart from the temp sync issue (I can live with that)!

I'm not sure about Dolphin grey either. It's looked good in some photos I've seen but I've seen it in the metal on a Tiguan and a couple of standard Golfs and it looked very flat to me. Too dull... one of those colours that needs blazing sunshine to look good imo.

Indium grey on the 7.5 was far nicer than either of the current greys imo.

There’s a couple on Auto Trader and they’re just meh.  I thought it was a solid colour at first.  I liked the 7.5 greys but not this one.

Dealer off trying to source a silver or blue one for me.

Agreed.

Atlantic blue is rather lovely too. My wife has it on a T-Roc. Very deep rich looking colour.

Nothing applied as of yet.

I have to admit I didn't consider any detailing, but from what I have read here, it might be on the to do list.

Title: Re: GTI Incoming
Post by: Colh on 01 May 2021, 10:02
Small irritations:

1) Lack of coin drawer on side of steering wheel - though I normally use mobile parking payment now, so unlikely a big miss
2) No metal kick plate on front door sills
3) Hard plastic inside glove box - also doesn’t seem any bigger despite lack of CD player etc.
4) Lane assist nearly pulled me back into a car parked on a verge
5) Golf embossed next to wireless charging mat - should be GTI surely!
6) No sunglasses holder - though I’ve not had one that didn’t rattle, so maybe no big miss.

Good stuff:
1) it’s quick
2) first time DSG for me and it’s excellent
3) I like the infotainment though it’ll take a bit of getting used to
4) seats are lush
5) seems more spacious inside but putting that down to lack of gearstick from the manual

More driving today!

You do get used to lane assist or good at quickly switching it off. I leave it on on a roads and motorways but turn it off down back roads... Its easy to do.
