Ive heard mixed opinions on this one. Some people say no because its keeps the chasis together but i can see no evidence of this. Personally i would say yes its safe. Probably not legal though.

On the mk2 the 4 bolts that secure the bumper are also securing the front cross member therefore  the front engine mount . There are 2x8mm bolts that still secure it when you remove the bumper but I personally wouldn't risk driving it like that .
The only way you could is to remove the 2 bumper brackets from the main bumper and refit them so that can refit the 4 bolts .

But make sure there are no jagged edges exposed and that you have all your indicators and numberplate  as Mr Plod may not be too happy if you get stopped.

Dizzie will need to use the bumper brackets as they have the captive nuts where the bolts screw in to

P.S. Bythe way  Dizzie why do need to take the wings of to get the geometry done??

My thoughts exactly, seems extreme.
Also have the front wings been off before? If not VAG use a ton of sealant along the trailing edge that makes getting the wings off intact a right pain.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

cos everyone I goto says they can't do my car cos it's too low!
If I take the wings off the front they can't say that.
I need to work out a way to drive with the wings on and then remove them in minutes when I get there. Likely to  be held on with 2 bolts. If I can still do it with the bumper attached I'll do that. I think I can!
