Title: Losing the airbag??? why???
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 23 April 2004, 22:53
Why do people change their airbag installed steering wheel for one of those Momo/Sparco etc steering wheels?

Obviously u mk1/2 boys and girls dont have an airbag so ur excused, but people with mk3/4/5 change their steering wheels for ones without airbags so it looks better.. personally "id" rather look better after sum1 decides to crash into me!

baffles me to risk ya safety for a fancy looking steering wheel....  ??? ::)

air bags dont save you.... they bust you up!

there is no need or an air bag if you have your seat belt on.........

not sure why people go for momo sterring wheels either. racing cars (and old f1 cars) used to have bare steering wheels and i think they look sh!te.

the only reason to have an airbag if your wearing a seat belt is to smash you in the face.

put it this way, you'll be in so much pain from the airbag, regardless of the accident - you'll have a psycho scare for the rest of your life and will drive like a saint in fear of being whalloped again. "wanna crash me ya ffcker - take that"....

but if you have an airbag and you have no seat belt, i think i read somewhere that "life" takes on a whole meaning. and includes the word "after".

something about this thread cause i've drunk a bottle of bacardi... :P

maybe road saftey campagins had progressed to deterents. crash the car -you die from being impaled by the steering column.

doesn't matter if you were at fault, you'll be dead. less complainers.

result.

then just remember the following:

your car has a mike tyson boxing glove aimed at your head. and if your lucky, it'll only go off if you have an accident.

and if your unlucky, it might go off in a "Chuckie"esque way when the car gets pissed off with you :) be kind to your car lol

The seatbelt, ... lap belt.
Title: Re:Losing the airbag??? why???

i disagree, the weight of your upper body would soon see u hit the top of a car going upwards  :o

Nothing, Thats the idea.

The whole point is that if the car rolls you fall out of the seat sideways and land on the roof, That way avoiding the roof comming down onto your neck and turning you into a human sized slinky.

Thats why i always laugh when i see Boy Racers with 4 point racing harnesses and no roll cadge, If they had a crash and flipped they would be toast.
Title: Re:Losing the airbag??? why???
Post by: vixteris on 26 April 2004, 02:14
the point im trying to make is gti.....

its all very well having an airbag if your head is gonna hit the wheel and its great if your gonna hit something going head on. but realistically we are gti drivers - we love our cars but theres nothin to stop someone coming sideways at us unless where in a sps volvo.  :-\

the way i see it is, if your gonna crash, your gonna crash - no amount of seatbelt or airbag is gonna save ur arse unless impact is at the right angle perfect for the saftey system. ::)

momo wheels all the way!!!!  8)
Title: Re:Losing the airbag??? why???
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 26 April 2004, 02:18
if ya car has good crumple zones and good impact beams, airbags etc u'll be safer .. by ALONG way then in summet without these features
Title: Re:Losing the airbag??? why???
Post by: tinman on 26 April 2004, 02:26
i have to agree with Black here. probably the first time some one has, but then my sense of logic ust got wwarpedby and a otlle of (dammkeyborad) a boottle of bacarid.

dang

anyway, added saftey features do make the difference, and after seeing the smash between an Esppace (90 somert) and Espace (2000 somert) on Five, it as quite shocking the protection the newer car gave over the older vehicle, and also, the detriment to which an odl vehicle suffered when being hit by a new vehicle.

an extract taken from the birgjhton and hove argus

A driver accused of causing the death of his friend in a car crash was travelling too fast to take a bend when the fatal accident happened.

Adam was at the wheel of a hired Vauxhall Astra when it collided with an oncoming Citroen in Balcombe, on June 4 last year.

A passenger in the Astra,  who was in the back, took the full force of the impact. He died almost instantly.

A jury at Lewes Crown Court heard the victim had been wearing a seat belt.

Accident investigator PC Graham Welsh said marks on the safety belt showed the dead teenager had put it on.

However, it was unable to prevent lateral movement inside the car as it spun 180 degrees.

so feck ur safety features!!!! ::)   buy a mrk 1 - stick in a momo steering wheel and drive a decnt car!!!

sorry for the reply above but it really winds me up when people think the new cars are better than the old cars are better simply cos of safety features

if u gona crash - brand new car or old car its simply down to speed of impact, angle of impact and the lack of driving skill that kills people.

what chance does someone have in a mark 1 cab if they roll it not wearing a 5 point harness???  learn the limits of your car, dont rely on the airbag please!!  :-\

Or to put what i think Vix is getting at another way, crash tests are artificial.  So a lot of the added protection will only do its job in the "perfect" crash scenario.  If you get smaked in the side at 30, an air bag is going to do Sweet FA, and the seatbelt aint much help either - there both designed to hep you in a frontal impact.

But the best solution to the air-bag/no air-bag is simple.

Dont crash. :D

Just ordered a nice non-airbag Victor steering wheel ;D
No safety features for me - live life on the edge ;)

i really did think the same thing, until they showed those two espaces hitting each other. new vs old.

the new car demolished the old car. the occupants of the new car would of walked away totally uninjured, and the old espace driver would of been dead. i think even the results shocked the programme makers.

of course alot has to do with speed and so forth. but dont underestimate the engineering behind modern cars.

i'll try and see if i can find the write up on the web somewhere.

I saw that 2, However i also noticed a flaw.

The 2002 Espas has front left and front right crumple zones, While the older model has a Centeral Front crumple zone, There for the crash they setup (front right to front right) was slightly biast.

Still an eye opener tho.

Nobody ever wants to crash their car, and no-one would do it deliberatly. I know people who have driven all their life and never crashed. With all the miles we each do every year, there is still only a small chance of an accident. You have a greater risk of being hurt doing mosy other day to day things, but there is more emphasis put on car safety features to the degree that it spoils the pleasure of driving. If I want to "risk" driving without the frills of a safety net, then I should be allowed to do so, I dont need anyone telling me I can or can't. - ABS, AirBags, Traction control, over engineered and heavy crumple zones, etc, etc.... these spoil the feel of a good car on a great road.
The best handling cars for out and out thrashing are things such as the Elise, VX220, caterham, etc and what "safety features do they have? not too many!
I want to "drive" it, not just arrive in it!

I'm completely baffled in why you worry about these things black????  ??? ???

Why get a GTI then worry about safety features... Just get a Micra or a Volvo... they're safe cars.

You're way old beofre your time.

When I was 18, I had a P-reg Polo 3dr, basic 1.0 model.

One night, travelling back from a night out (I hadnt been drinking, before you ask) I was turning right at traffic lights, and failed to see a toyota carina coming towards me. I was only in 2nd gear, pulling away, doing about 10mph, the other woman was doing like 35ish.

It was almost head- on, and I(with no airbag) only suffred some chipped teeth and nasty seatbelt bruise plus whiplash. My passengers were the same, with the fromt passenger having a fractured fibula.

The woman in the carina however (airbag) had to be stretchered away, and apparently had serious whiplash and needed physio after.

Bearing in mind that her car was bigger, really i think she was worse off with having the airbag. Plus she was only a very small lady, so wouldve got it full in the face.

Black....

Its that same old thing call personnel taste, seems to me that every mod you choose to do comes from divine inspiration yet every mod you choose not to do makes the persons car look, cheap, scally, rice, unsafe whatever you want to call it.... why not just let people do what they want to do without question or ridicule....

Newer cars are safer not just because of airbags, more because they have more crumple zones that will take the force of collision.
Title: Re:Losing the airbag??? why???
Post by: tinman on 27 April 2004, 10:16
exactly, new cars are designed to channel the energy away from the passengers.

i always thought the crash protection idea on Demolition Man with the foam was a rather good "future" idea.

newer cars also have side impact airbags, and those ones that drop and stop sh!t from the back flying forwards through the car. the 4motion has about 15 airbags..
