Title: TONA's ride
Post by: Guy on 30 May 2010, 15:38
well... it's here... at last... a few of you might have guessed... a few of you knew, but I didn't want to say anything till I actually had it

after many months of searching high and low for the 'right' van at the 'right' price we finally came up trumps by the looks of things...

I had muchos spec for this as I knew what I wanted for the business, something spacious and very clean and tidy.. ie. no whacking great dents but something that I could valet up into something very good that would look smart for my customers.

also had a VW in mind as well... I like em, you lot like em... and I didn't fancy turning up to meets or shows in a transit!

so... settled on a VW caddy and after much searching at a lower budget with no joy and only finding sheds and toilets from hell I upped the budget and Mr Chuff, Mr Jord and Mr Horne and I set to work keeping an eye out for the 'right' one.

I can't remember if Mr Chuff or I found it one evening... I think I did then consulted Mr Chuff.  I found it on the Wednesday and went to view it with Chuff on the Thursday evening. It hadn't even hit the autotrader paper so the bloke was surprised to get a call.

So here it is...

73k on the clock... new brakes and tyres not long ago, full ply lined and full bulkhead, twin side loading doors and from what Chuff and I can see its as straight as a die... but the good news is... its a TDi

thank you to Chuff for being so patient with me and for the trips to various hell holes :afro:
thank you to Jord for the auction advice and for showing me about bidding etc... it didn't happen but it is worth knowing about :afro:
thanks also to those of you that were keeping an eye out and sending me links to various forms of vans... all were much appreciated :afro:

keeping it 'mostly' standard mikey... I am sure the time will come eventually but for the moment just going to keep it standard... have other 'kit' to be shelling out on before the 'fun' stuff

chuff - as if we look like drug dealers!

You should check out this build thread:

http://www.eastcoastdubs.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3384

(you dont need to sign up to view it)

And its not a all out modded caddy of that shape, its a work van as yours is.

love these vans... If you're ever in need of some comfy perches or the originals tweaked I'm sure we could come to some arrangement. Also I have a mate who does livery, if you haven't already got anything sorted it might be worth having a chat to him?

have seen a cheeky little install that I would like to emulate... its relatively simple but quite smart in its concept, and will hopefully avoid racking

right... its been a while

in the meantime I have been busy smashing up Denty some more and getting engine management lights coming up

Denty the van is off to VW in Basingstoke this afternoon to be code read but it is suspected that it is the coils, the coil loom is fine... so they'll probably be changed

I also managed to do a successful job of destroying the front bumper on a bollard so I am having a touran bumper priced up together with the slam panel cover from which the bumper sheared  :lipsrsealed:  so hopefully this will be in place soon...

I now know a very good spray shop so will get the bumper done at the same time as the other dent  :lipsrsealed:

after that it is service and cambelt and new clutch - busy times!

tw@t.

spoke to VW and they said no way should it be driven long distance (its 14 miles to garage).

cost of new flywheel £300 + labour
cost of recovery truck £13.44 + beer tippage for dropping me back home

you do the math

anyway... it was virtually undriveable... its all sorted with brand new clutch. fitted in about 2 and a bit hours. Apparently the old one was COMPLETELY FUBAR

Try using an extension bar for a socket set against your ear and then the engine that should help isolate the noise and figure out where it's coming from. I suspect it'll be something silly and not nasty.

Lol just replied to your PM.

If you're getting it sorted just remember when you pop it back together not to over tighten the belt as it'll put extra stress on the new pulley.

its an automatic tensioner... you see that lug above the freewheel top left... you have to pop a 16mm spanner in there and lever it down so you can pop the belt on.. bit tricksy as there ain't enough room for the spanner and your hands to position the belt but I got there in the end

good job I was taking the alternator to vw when I got the freewheel as you need the alternator model correct as well as the chassis number as there are a myriad of options

anyway... all is well that ends well... running as sweet as a nut

Glad you got this sorted and well done for taking the alternator off and putting it back in, looks like there is a lack of space in Caddy's same as Shalaxies

Top Tip: Use Mole grips on that lug when loosening the tensioner. Much easier than using a spanner, allows you to pull on it with one hand while the other hand slots in a allen key to lock the tensioner with ease.

A bit late, but maybe it will help someone

aye.. not much room... certainly not as much room as the acres of space in a mk3 engine bay.. short nosed little fcukers that caddys are!

tensioner doesn't lock as such.. just pulls up and then eases down onto the belt... vw mechanic told me to use 16mm spanner as that was what it was designed for, so who am i to argue,  and it worked well enough.. just needed a small persons hands to squeeze the belt into position

quick update...

nothing much has happened to the Caddy recently... but I have plans for this year and it has been raised up my priority list

the ramap Rhyso/Carbon did is working scweeeet... much better and more confident driving the van now.

this year:
exterior
the front bumper still needs to be replaced along with one wheel arch
the van will be sitting on lowing springs (front) and a lowering kit (back) as soon as I can afford it.
new wheels - these are being sourced at the moment
new TONA livery will be ordered and applied as soon as I can
rear windows will be limo tinted and the rear wiper removed

so the aim is for this...

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151238983370182&set=a.25857450181.101709.517845181&type=1&theater (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151238983370182&set=a.25857450181.101709.517845181&type=1&theater) but liveried

interior
fit sub and amp that I have as I miss my soundz
also put an underfloor system into place with drawers in and then interior carpet the rest
(http://www.vansystem.co.uk/userdata/PRODPIC-436.jpg)
+
http://www.megavanmats.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=144997393 (http://www.megavanmats.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=144997393)

trouble is.. the drawers in the picture are hyper expensive about about £300ea  so I need another solution  :undecided:

i think i might have to learn how to use a jigsaw  :lipsrsealed:

if anyone knows how to build drawers (properly) or knows a chippy who wants a detail then please let me know
