Always said the second outing would be interesting to see and with a slew of tweaks and at about £30,000 with dual clutch option taking it to £31,000 and given what seen of the MK 8 think be seriously looking at it for at least one go around of ownership on this face-lift and the MK 11 should be really interesting if they trim the weight down and tweak some more -

Its interesting - I had it on my radar for this time around.... shame the timing is wrong though.

Mind you, my latest car swap has been nothing but delays and dissapointment full stop - starting with the Mk8 coming very late and covid getting in the way of test driving anything before i had to decide.

Yes, this is on my shortlist but need to have a seriously long and extensive look all over this car (in terms of could I live with the plastics and operating features).  Also need to do an economy test as seen fellow forum members report that people only get high 20s. So will want an extensive test drive to check out fuel consumption (golf R gives 33mpg and that is 4WD).

Also reading the prototype test drive reports and Hyundai info, it sounds like the DCT doe add a fair chunk of weight to the i30N and its not the lightest in manual from what I hear.

But I do want to have a close look at one (and test drive) as I can imagine that the list price (I think it might be more £32K for hatch with DCT) with a discount will be down into mid-high 20s  Which will be much more appealing to the wallet than a VW in low 30s. Will depend on how I find all the controls etc and living with it.

If it is a no, there is always the 7.5R to look go for.

How is the search going? Is it between M135i and 128ti

Well, I've got to:

M135i - second hand, lots to choose from for the budget I've got
128ti - new, got a spec and a price, waiting for a test drive - I've actually got an open order based on the test drive being acceptable
Mk8 GTI - new, got a spec and a price, waiting for a test drive

All of those come out around the same price but 128ti is the cheapest.

I30N (current model) is off of the list because I want an auto box this time....

Obviously can’t comment on the new model but the old one really impressed me. Great drive but it was very firm. I thought the interior was ok tbh but I went straight from that test drive to VW and sat in a gti. Night and day imo. I’ll be doing the same comparison again when I change.

My friend has the current i30n so I asked him what issues he’s had.

None, not even a rattle

Maybe I’m unlucky but my 7.5 has had so many issues. Same with my mk7, my mk6, my mk5..

So, well put together but poor plastics. That makes sense to me. Wonder what it’ll be like with the Mk8?

Sorry. That must be incredibly frustrating to have the shortlist and be able to narrow further as you can’t get a test drive.

Hope you can get some test drives soon and look forward to your reviews. I watched Volkswizard comparison between S3 and M135i.  It was interesting to see inside of BMW and better appearance of the interior. Can totally see why people are turning to BMW.

Good luck with getting your test drives in

Even more frustrating considering this all started about twelve months ago when I started preparing a choice and an order to swap over smoothly... An utterly bad timing for new models and as it turns out that was the least of the problem..

I don't think I could live with it, but I appreciate they have done a good job with it.

I have a similar shortlist for replacement of our ED40.

M135i, probably nearly new
128Ti
Mk8 Clubsport
Mk8 ED45

Ideally i'd like the ED45 depending on what it finally looks like, but I think the pricing will be crazy as it will slot in between the R and Clusbport.

Really want to get the test drives on the BMWs but local dealer is a tool to be frank, they are just interested in pcp'ing as many cars out the door as possible.
