could well be. My gearbox mount is fooked so when i reverse or when i used engine braking agressively, gearbox hits the inner wing and makes a clunk sound. Stick handbrake on, get a mate to do reverse with handbrake on, while you look under the car.

Actually that throws up another Q. What, in the hell, would my exhaust be rattling off under heavy breaking and on start up?

Rear axle is the most common area.

as wayne says. Rear axle is most common but could also be the heatshield along the transmission tunner.

if it only started when u wond coilies down then its rear axle. VERY common problem. Either raise the exhaust up abit with new exhaust hangers/polyutherane ones, reposition the pipe over the rear axle, or raise the car abit.

On mine the clamp was fitted so the nuts were banging the axle beam, turned the clamp over and it was gone.
