Title: Folding mirrors retro fit - Questions & Guide/advice
Post by: Nino on 17 October 2023, 10:41
Morning all,
Having finally purchasing a legal vagcom cable  I have to say, after many years of using *cough* naughty cables, I cannot beleive how much faster the officail one is.

Anyway....

On my Ed35, I have already enabled Dail sweep, Alarm cherp when car is locked and the other normal cool things.

I would like to retrofit folding mirrors and understand that I will need the following;

What I would like to do is be able to have the mirrors auto fold when I lock the car (I understand that you need to hold the lock button for 2-3s) and that is can only be done if you have the correct door modules??

I am hoping to get some solid information if possible and if anyone knows the exact part numbers of what it is I will need, that would really help me out.

Thanks,
Nino.

Left module - 5K0 959 793 A
Right (Driver) - 5K0 857 508 AF (Right Electric Mirror Assembly)
Right module - 5K0 959 792 A

Hi Nino, whilst I may not be able to directly help on what exact modules you do need to get them to fold in on key press. My Mk6 Golf was fitted with the 'luxury pack' from factory, so it has the fold-in mirrors via the switch on the driver's door.

I'll run a VCDS scan on my car and see what door module part numbers report back to the software.  You may then beable to find out if those ones are compatible with your required modification.

Personally I've never tried coding the wing mirrors to the way you're looking to do.  As I'm quite happy with the normal switch operation, plus for me it would mean folding them back in again when I want to reverse the car out of the garage.

Cheers

That would be super helpful, thanks Bluto.

Hi Nino

I've done a VCDS scan on my 2009 MK6 GTI with factory fit luxury pack. According to VCDS its door modules are:

Address 42: Door Elect, Driver
   Part No SW: 5K0 959 701 C    HW: 5K0 959 701 C

Address 52: Door Elect, Pass.
   Part No SW: 5K0 959 702 C    HW: 5K0 959 702 C

Hope that may assist you in finding what door modules are compatible with the "fold-in mirrors on key press" mod you're after.

Cheers

Interesting! Thank you for this, I will scan my car and see what mine are.

Don't suppose you have a way to scan the part numbers of your mirrors by anychance?

Checked mine:
Drivers: 5K0 959 701 B
Passenger: 5K0 959 702 B

I wonder what the difference between ours is.

Hi Nino:

Well as the C and B generally refer to revisions, there may be some minor differences.

Having had a quick look on Partslink24.com with my car's VIN number.  5K0 959 701 J and 5K0 959 702 J look to be the latest compatible Window regulator motors for my car. Guessing the J is the latest revision of that motor.  Which I'm assuming must have some kind of module on it, as VCDS scanned it.

The Window regulator motor's control module may be the unit that sends the signal to control the door wing mirrors on key press.  Though I'd actually expect that to come from the car's Body Control Module (BCM).  Not a mechanic, so not sure.

Not sure if you're already aware, but one note of caution regarding module part numbers is that modules can have index codes that aren't shown on the original module sticker.  Point in case is when I upgraded my car to LED rear tail lights I needed a new BCM. The dealer quoted me part number 1K0 937 087 E Z1Z, not just 1K0 937 087 E.  So somthing to bear in mind when purchasing used modules.

In terms of part number of the wing mirrors themselves. I don't believe they have modules in them, so don't think VCDS will be able to pull part numbers.  So without some dissassembly I doubt I can get that for you.

But I'd suggest maybe going looking at Partslink24 with your VIN to see what Wing mirror parts are available.  You can get one hour's access for about £13.

The complete housings compatible with my car are currently listed as :

 and

My assumption as to why the left-hand mirror has a memory function and the right-hand one doesn't could be the dip passenger mirror on reverse feature.

Thought I would post an update since I suppose others may be thinking about this.

So, over the past few months, been looking for cheap parts and researching.
Coupled with the info from Bluto (Thanks again) I decided to take a plunge.

I bought some 2nd hand Power folding mirrors on ebay I decided I wanted to get VW OEM ones and not the 3rd party ones.
NOTE: Don't worry about which ones you get. Just make sure they are power folding and have the puddle lights, they will work.

Just make sure you buy the Golf ones and NOT the Golf cabriolet ones as the backing plates are much more narrow.

I managed to find some baged up ones from a breaker on ebay for £65.

I then found trouble getting the Golf Door modules, there were ether to expensive or I just couldn't find them and again, I wasn't buying 3rd party ones ether.

So I took a punt and bought, VW EOS Sport 2DR CONVERTIBLE WINDOW MOTORS I found these seperately from different sellers and got them for around £19 each.

Final part I needed was the new window switch. Got this on ebay for around £13.

Now I could have stopped there, thats a full retrofit for £116.

I however wanted to upgrade/replace some parts
- New gloss balck mirror caps (not genuine £17.55)
Click HERE (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394275450060) for link to buy.
- LED puddle lights (not genuine £11.39)
Click HERE (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372890045723) for link to buy.
- New bottom parts to the mirrors including smoked black LED indicators (not genuine £13.02)
Click HERE (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005879664723.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.10.55d0180294pa6J) for link to buy.
- New upgraded blue anti dazzle glass with blind spots. (not genuine £19.98)
Click HERE (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120565407223) for link to buy.

Only part I am not massively keep on was that the indicators are dynamic sweep, I felt this is a tacky thing on an older car however, now its fitted, it has grown on me.

Total price for everything at this point is: £177.94 which I think is a good price for the upgrade.
Here are some pictures, I am sure you will agree.

What I have found however, is due to the modules being from a 2DR convertable, they were doing the window drop thing.
I had to use my VAGCOM to recode the modules and disable rear door modules (was enabled on the drivers one for some reason) and also disable the feature for window drop for convertables, passenger module also didnt have folding mirror or puddle light enabled. Once I did all this, I now have fully functioning power folding mirrors and I must say, I am quite pleased with myself.

Nice walk through guide Nino and good retrofit. I get fed up with manually closing the mirrors before garaging the car.

I had them on my Mk7 GTD as well as many other toys but this is the only thing I miss from the MK7 so I had to do it.

Nice little upgrade.
Was never bothered by mine not folding but I do miss the mirror tilt down when reversing.

You've been rather busy there @Nino.

Looking good, glad everything looks to be playing nice, despite a little bit of VCDS coding.  Great result chap.

Yeah, I haven't sorted the mirror dip bit yet, on the list to sort it.

Tiny update:
Got the mirror dip working on reverse.

Everything works exactly as it should apart from 1 thing.

Whenever, I unlock the car or open the drivers door, both the passenger window and drivers window drop about 1cm as if its a convertable.

Soon as I close the door/lock the car, the windows both go back up.
I have disabled the convertable "window drop" option in Vagcom on both modules but it still does it.

I guess its hard coded somewhere into the modules as they came off a convertable.
Don't suppose anyone know another way I can solve this?

Right, I have cracked it.

So, the Modules come as two seperate sections.
When we scan them with VCDS, you dail into the motor part number and not the module with the A on the end, the A just adds more features.

So, for the Golf, You will notice looking at my part numbers, they match Bluto's earlier scans accept his is the C version not B version like mine. where as because I have used new modules from a Sirocco & EOS Golf both of which are pillarless, the movment is hard coded into the Motors themselfs.

The motor part numbers on these were:

The Golf Part numbers are:

I have managed to code them so while they will open 1cm when I unlock the car, once I get in and close the door, they go back up, they also drop when I remove the key from the ignition.

While it is slightly annoying, I can live with it for now.

I will in the meantime, continue to look for replacement GOLF modules and replace them around in the spring.
For anyone reading this and wanting to do it, you MUST ensure that you buy Golf ones, look at the picture below of my OEM ones, I have editied the picture the ones you want to look for to be compatatble with Folding power mirrors.

Hoppe this helps others to not make the same mistake I did

Finally fitted the new units, coded and boom, no more window drop, mirrors fold & dip in reverse as they should too. Everything now working, can put this to bed!
