Thanks for the replies.

I've had a look at the thread mentioned above - certainly plenty to plough through there, but it's mostly niggles that are specific to individual cars. Is there anyone here in the community who's up to speed on the recurring issues that affect the model generally - known weakspots with the engine, any issues with the transmission that potential buyers should be aware of, that sort of thing?

If anyone could recommend a GTI specialist who's well respected in the community, I could maybe have a chat with them.

Cheers,

Peter T

@MR Tommo,

All the people who have replied to this thread know the most about the MK6 GTI - People like Snoopy can tell you more than enough to write an article.

And to some up your question, main two faults is Timing Tensioner (huge design flaw) and the ever failing DSG gearbox
MK6 GTI CSG | Revo Stage 2 | Revo Stage 2 Intake | Milltek 3" TB Exhaust | SuperPro Anti Lift Kit | H&R ARB's | Bilstein B12 | TT Short Shifter |Mintex M1144 Race Pads | HEL Braided Lines |

MK5 GTI - DSG + Extras (Sold because DSG was Soooo Boring !!!)

My GTI sits for weeks/months at a time and starts first time with no slipping of the cam chain (fingers crossed).

My 7 year old Mk5 had a DSG gearbox (the same DSG gearbox as the Mk6) and it's never ever missed a beat - it gets it's oil and filter changed...and it does what it does. Every day. Without fail.

Whilst I acknowledge that these problems happen...I don't believe they are common.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Thanks again. Sounds like I need to speak to either Snoopy or The Doc. If either would be kind enough to drop me a line at petertomalin@me.com I'd be very grateful.

I'm just not sure what I've got is the same as your issue? :undecided:

Can you provide photos/guide on what you did and where you sourced the clip?

It will be the wastegate rod mate, it was a very common problem on the mk6, i had the clip put on mine by the dealers which solved it, type wastegate in the search bar at the top and you'll see.

Well it's booked in. Let's see what they say.

Despite it being a 3 minute fix (I watched the YouTube video) they still want to get the warranty guy out to look at it. So whereas it could've cost them about £5 to fix what is basically a design fault, it'll now cost them a couple of hundred.

Eejits.
