so I can use any oil as long as its 5-30 ?

During the warranty period, you must use oil that has been approved to either 502 or 504/507. Brand and viscosity are secondary considerations.

Almost all major lubricant manufacturers offer a VW approved 504/507 oil, so I'd imagine they aren't too hard to find on the shelves.

5w30 refers to the viscosity of the oil, but nothing else. There is much more to the 504/507 spec oils than just the viscosity rating. In particlar you'll want to use a 507 approved oil to protect your DPF (assuming we are talking about a diesel).

For example, Shell Helix Ultra Extra is 504/507 approved, but other 5W30 Helix Ultra oils aren't.

Whether the car is set to time and distance or longlife is largely irrelevant as far as the choice of oil goes.

Look only for the 504.00/507.00 VW approval. When you see that written on the side of the can, it'll be the one you want.

I was just about to post those. A good read for anyone asking about oil. Im sure the second link from what i remember also says VW instucted the dealers to use the same oil regardless now.
