"White is the new black - but today's most valuable colours may not be so appealing when you come to trade in your vehicle, claims the latest research.
British car auction (BCA) has just published details on the most popular used car colours sold in the first three months of the year - and the results favour tradionally 'safer' choices such as silver, blue and black.
In 2008 blue was the most common colour, but it has now been overtaken by silver, which accounted for a huge 25% of the 125,000 cars in the survey. The biggest mover in the BCA 'colour chart' was black, which added nearly 6% to its 2008 total. But as with fashionable clothing, bodywork paint choices can be a fickle game - as motor makers follow the latest trends through the highs and lows.
On nealy new vehicles, buyers can often be tempted by shades that are 'in' only to find they are no longer desirable when the time comes to sell a few years down the line - and that their model is then worth less than a silver car with a similar spec.
A BCA spokesman said " while fashionable colours - such as the high-impact white finishes are very appealing now, the worry is that they can just as quickly become deeply unfashionable. In the same way, limited-edition models with over fussy colour schemes tend to date quickly"
