Nope it's not happening  I searched on here how to upload pics but my pictures are displayed differently to how they are on here, if that makes sense? When I go on the pic it only comes up with the option to copy and a few other things :undecided:. Could it be because its on I-pad?

So I picked the car up locally to me a few months ago, the bloke was asking for 1600 for it and after a bit of haggling got it for 1400. Bit of an impulse buy really but was sick of the diesel mondao that was my dads before I got it
Anyway the car is an 8v and has covered 167k. It's going to be used as my everyday car as I also have a wkend car that only comes out on sunny days :nerd:
So started doing a few bits and bobs to her.
(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps3ca59585.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps3ca59585.jpg.html)
So a fews bits of rust I could see and could have a go at grinding filling and spraying.

Post by: Mcwill on 10 September 2013, 23:25
So after I had done my bits of bodywork decided it would probably be a good idea to take it down the body shop, let them take off bumpers and see what is lerking underneath and also there was a dint in the roof and side panel that I wanted sorting they were also going to wax oil the underneath for me.
So went and spoke with the guy who would be doing the job and got it booked in for a month down the line.
Meantime I thought I would give them a head start and take out some of the interiour.
And 1 hour later

Title: Re: Mk2 golf revival

So with most of the outside bodywork done thought I would make a start on the inside so out with the front seats.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsebcb12b6.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsebcb12b6.jpg.html)

Next was to give the inside a going over with a wire brush attachment on the drill, only a couple of little surface rust spots.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsaafbb4ff.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsaafbb4ff.jpg.html)

Then went crazy with the zink spray, that stuff gets everywhere.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps55c9c826.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps55c9c826.jpg.html)

Then some undercoat.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps1cf123bc.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps1cf123bc.jpg.html)

That was it for that day.

Spent most the morning cleaning the over spray off the inside of the car, oops.
Did not want to repeat so made sure I covered everything.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsfbc19a23.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsfbc19a23.jpg.html)

Next was the oak green spray followed by a clear lacquer.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps704bd328.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps704bd328.jpg.html)

And that brings us upto today  so this mornings list of things to do.
Fit new aerial.
Remove stereo
Fit new door leavers
Fit new washer jets
Fit new boot struts

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps0b68a833.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps0b68a833.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsf96898e5.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsf96898e5.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps9a861c41.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps9a861c41.jpg.html)

First job fit new boot struts, easy joy not sticking anymore.

Next was the washer jets

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsc4a9ee50.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsc4a9ee50.jpg.html)

Then it was the door handles now this was not as easy but got there. And also found out why the passenger door struggles to close.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps911d78fb.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps911d78fb.jpg.html)

Then it was time to fit new aerial  now this was a pain in the arse, first job was to take out stereo and the new keys that I ordered to take it out with dint work so had to try a different approach.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps6159e72a.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps6159e72a.jpg.html)

Tryed to run the aerial wire along the floor of the car as I dint want to disturb the roof lining as its in mint condition but wouldn't reach :undecided: so had to run it under the roof lining. After lots of pushing and shoving I got it in place with no damage

While doing the door handles I noticed how battered the drivers door card is from water leaking in so tryed a bit of a quick fix with wood glue and clamps

Last job of the day was going to be drill the roof and bolt the new aerial in place but the weather put an end to that. So that's were we are at the moment, will be keeping up to date as I go along now.
Thanks for looking.

Bit of an update with today's efforts.
First job was to spray the dash speedo surround.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps732461e6.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps732461e6.jpg.html)

After.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpse658d11c.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpse658d11c.jpg.html)

Not a brill job but don't think I rubbed it down enough before spraying.

Pic of the door handle I fitted yesterday.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps21e9ee01.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps21e9ee01.jpg.html)

Next job was to Finnish off fitting the arial. Turns out it had a bee sting arial fitted at some point in its life, I assume from factory but somebody thought a wing arial would look better

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps450079ba.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps450079ba.jpg.html)

This turned up in the post

Boot seal, it did not have one and there was a bit of a puddle in the boot with all the rain we've been having, 20mins later sorted

Thought I would give the seat belts a bit of a wash as they were looking a bit grubby with all the work that's been going on. Bit of a makeshift drying method

Got a leak on the drivers side door because of a fooked  outer window scrapper. Well I think that's what it's called, if anybody could confirm?

So all today's jobs done. Took the old girl for a spin and its such good fun to drive although its not fast it feels fast and I'm loving the new steering wheel feels great has to be up there with my best buy yet, that and the gear knob.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsd2e6b77f.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsd2e6b77f.jpg.html)

New heater controls needed a bit of filing to make them fit and they haven't got the best of finishes on them but think they look ok.

Just got back from work and the old girl seems to of developed a water leak  not sure where about its coming from but its somewhere at the back.
Got tomorrow off so will jack her up and have a closer look, hopefully will be something that's a quick fix.
Got a few other little jobs I won't mind getting done on her
Title: Re: Mk2 golf revival
Post by: Mcwill on 18 September 2013, 20:43
Had a closer look at the water leak this morning and this seems to be where it's coming from.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsbccb47d7.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsbccb47d7.jpg.html)

Not sure if that's where the water pump is? Any feedback would be good guys.

Few new bits been deliverd over last couple of days.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps48532eef.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps48532eef.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps822e0d9e.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps822e0d9e.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsfe641c23.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsfe641c23.jpg.html)

Today was hoping to fit the new bonnet struts, door latches and dash bulbs, well that dint happen

So after taking the wheel off to inspect the water leak I noticed the bodyshop had not oil sealed the inside of the wings as much as I would have liked.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps1242f492.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps1242f492.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps492537f7.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps492537f7.jpg.html)

So off to the shop I went.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps76fe8720.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps76fe8720.jpg.html)

So jacked the car up on one side and sat on axel stand then jacked other side up and, oh crap.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps267d8432.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps267d8432.jpg.html)

Rusty jacking point, now don't judge me but just a bit of a quick fix.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps5e938ce2.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps5e938ce2.jpg.html)

After my bit of filling I started wax oiling and undercoating. Was really pleased with the finished result got in every nook and cranny

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps7fa01b5a.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps7fa01b5a.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpse46ad147.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpse46ad147.jpg.html)

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps8cc28818.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps8cc28818.jpg.html)

After a full day off undersealing and wax oiling the old girl I tryed to fit the bonnet gas struts but dint really go that well  going to attempt them again tomorrow.

Was wondering if I should buy myself a mig welder to sort the new hole in the floor out. Not done any welding before but have always wanted to give it a try but haven't got a clue on what welder to buy. If anybody could give me any advice on what I should be looking at getting, that would be great
Seen some on ebay for 100 odd pounds but not sure if they would be crap.

Please feel free to comment.

It's worth buying the best you can afford, I personally have a murex welder which I bought approx 15 years ago and still as good as it was then.

Don't bother with gas less, but remember you need bottle and regulator, don't bother with the small bottles either

Update from Thursday.
Thursday morning took deliver of outer window scraper and what a load of crap! The bloke who had sent it had folded it in half  and it was badly perished and to short. Ebay

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps62bb2e75.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps62bb2e75.jpg.html)

Dint look to bad after a bit of cut and shut with the old one

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsab740131.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsab740131.jpg.html)

Next job was to sort the bonnet struts out.
Had really been struggling the nite before to get the nut onto the bolt end through the bonnet because you could not get two fingers through the hole. Hope pic gives a better explanation.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/71019f65-2e14-4192-9a9c-bcab06f0ff5b_zps5e4ec1b7.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/71019f65-2e14-4192-9a9c-bcab06f0ff5b_zps5e4ec1b7.jpg.html)

Anyway after much thought had the idea of sticking the nut to my finger with silicon then putting finger through hole and pushing it against the bolt while tightening. Genius
The other side I just tapped it.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsa2389a5f.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsa2389a5f.jpg.html)

Pleased with end result

Next was to fit the new door latches, easy job and tidys it up a bit.

Broken one before.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps911d78fb.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps911d78fb.jpg.html)

After

That's about all I got done. Next free day ill Have on her will be Monday so will update then.
Thanks for looking.

After talking to a few people over the last couple of days I have got an engine and wiring loom sorted and a garage willing to fit it, just waiting on a price to fit  So hopefully can get things moving along now.
Also ordered some new bits other day.

Full set of jbl speakers
New kenwood stereo
Full set of pi shocks and springs

Thanks for looking, feel free to comment.

Water pump is directly under the alternator bolted to the front of the block. The alternator belt runs round the crank pulley, water pump pulley and alternator. Should help you spot it.

I bought this welder http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/010110125 (http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/010110125) earlier in the year. I'd stay away as the minimum power is a shade too high for bodywork and it burns through easily.

I've also owned this http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/mig-90en-no-gas-mig-welder (http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/mig-90en-no-gas-mig-welder) which was much better for thin steel but spend more money if you can.

Auto dark helmet isnt essential but it REALLY helps  :)

Thanks for that mole.
Bit of an update of the last couple days.
Yesterday noticed that the front plastic arch had come adrift a bit  turned out the front wheel had cought the front wing and bent it up and bust one of the rivets off  sorted it out today bent back and fastend again. Hopefully when new susspention comes it will be a bit stiffer and won't be a recurring thing :undecided:

Up today after 3hours sleep off a nite shift and off to Grimsby to get my new 2l 16v engine

Not the cleanest looking but will hopefully look better with a bit of tlc. Come with all bits needed to do conversion just got to wait on the price from garage, should find out tomorrow.

New wiper blades fitted today.

12 hour shift at work today then to the gym then home, about 6 miles away from home and boom masses of steam, crap! Water pump had imploded on its self.
Got the wife to come out to me with loads of bottles of water but as soon as I put it in it came out again, so rang my mate to come out and tow me. The joys of running old cars.

Pic of her on road side

Had a bit of an update to day from Scott(the bloke who is fitting and rebuilding my engine) engine is stripped down and the head has been sent off to be skimmed and some others bits and bobs done to it. So tomorrow ill be going down there to clean and spray the block.
Today changed the blue LEDs in the dash for white ones as it was really dull in blue, also sprayed a few dash bits in gloss black. Will be pleased to get her back on the road.

Bit of an update of how today went, realised what I had done wrong yesterday on the front so put it rite and started on the other side.
It was a total pain in the arse the shock and spring went on ok but the new bottom arm dint seem to fit as well as the other side and some off the bolts were tight as hell as one of my spanners found out

Few pics of her on her way.

Looking good mate. Defo need to roll your arches! I envy you driving a mk2.

2.0 16v is a much better engine than the 1.8 16v if you ask me. Feel a lot torquer. Having said that I've only driven a mk2 1.8 and a mk3 2.0 (both 16v) and I know what I preferred. How long until you get it back? Are you planning on doing anything to improve the 2.0? Cams?
Title: Re: Mk2 golf revival
Post by: Mcwill on 13 October 2013, 14:38
Thanks for the comment Ian, mine is just an 8v so should notice a big difference. Going to keep it as is for a bit then maybe see about cams and map?
Not sure how long until I get it back, engine is in the process of getting rebuilt. Maybe 2-3wks?? We will see.
Regards arches, i am thinking of buying an arch roller off ebay and doing it myself. Looks easy enough to do on YouTube.

Time for a update. Had a few pics sent today from the garage that are doing engine convertion. Really pleased with the job they are doing so far, top lads really taking time and doing bits bobs that I dint think they would do.

Pics they sent.

Bit of welding they have done under the air box

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsd131acb8.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsd131acb8.jpg.html)

Some welding needed here

They then cleaned up the engine bay and gave it a bit of a spray to tidy it up.

Been down to the garage today to paint clean up a few bits.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps3099818a.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps3099818a.jpg.html)

So gave the gear box a good clean and also had a look at what they had been doing to the engine. After cleaning gearbox gave it a spray.

Been looking on eBay last few wks at rear tailgates on the off chance anything decent comes up and it did but I missed it as I was at work so I messaged the guy and he was willing to take his starting bid of £25  the bloke was only 15 miles down the road and when I got there I was more then happy with it, it's mint condition and came with gas struts, spoiler, lock etc £25 is a rite bargain.
I'm removing the rear wiper and wash jet so started stripping it today and got it all stripped apart from the window  could not get it to pop out, might let the bodyshop do it when they spray it.

Bit of an update.
Still not got the car back yet cos garage had a few problems getting a few parts for it, then when they did get it all running spot on they had a problem with the susspention I had fitted  to low on the front and the splitter scrapes on the floor when you go over 25mph!

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zpsdc3d99e0.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zpsdc3d99e0.jpg.html)

So I have got some new 40mm springs for the front.

In the mean time I have got myself some g60 brakes

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz254/libmc123/image_zps9e74bf35.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/libmc123/media/image_zps9e74bf35.jpg.html)

They look better in this pic then they really are, paint is a bit rough. So

Also got the tailgate booked in for re spray at start of next month.

Took the car down down to a local exhaust fabricator yesterday got a stainless system built up, twin 3" tailpipe. Picked it up today and sounds really good.
Now the bad bit, noticed since getting the car back from having the abf engine fitted the bonnet has been struggling to close. Turns out this is because the engine sits a lot higher and the bonnet catches on the top of the engine. So the last few days that I have pushing down on the bonnet with some force has resulted in  it creasing  can't believe it, to say am gutted is an understatement. All the money I spent on getting the body work done and I have just gone and put a big crease down my brand new bonnet :embarrassed: took it down to bodyshop today and its going to be £150 o get sorted, great more money.

Fitted new 160mph clocks and stereo yesterday clocks look great but the speedo needle seems to bounce up and down every now and again?
Today started to fit the carpets and other interior parts in, very time consuming think I'm about half way there.
Really loving the golf now I have her back again. Hoping to get lots of bits done to her over the crimbo hols.

Got the car booked back in bodyshop to get the crease taken out the bonnet  at the same time they are spraying a new front bumper I have taken down there and a small dent in at the bottom of the passenger door.
Waiting on new number plates to come before fitting the new tailgate.
The plates at the min are the pressed metal ones and have screw holes in them and they are a bit bent so just going for normal plastic ones.

Looks good mate. Personally think the headlights / grill / indicator selection on the front lets it down a little, but each to their own.

The garage should really have sorted that bonnet FOC too I reckon, how had they not checked clearances?! Anyway, all done now eh :)

I no the lights/grill are not to everyone's taste but i like the crystal light look.
The garage did a lot of good work on the car and I didn't want to kick up a fuss and maybe spoil a good relationship for the future. All sorted now

I no the lights I had on are desirable but one of the bots was broken off on one and it was letting water in.
I like the new ones, I no there just cheap after market ones but think they suit the car.

Haven't posted for a while, car has been in garage getting stainless manifold fitted, dident fit so needed chopping and making fit.
Sounds really good almost like its angry

So after much looking at other golfs on net I decided mine was missing something :undecided:
So I have removed the single grill and the led indicators.
Also fitted some g60 arches and at the same time totally rolled the arches. Pleased with the end result.
Car is screaming out for some new wheels, I'm thinking 16" bbs reps?

So not had much time to get out done to car as I have been banging the hours in at work.
Finally got the vdo clocks fitted really pleased with how they look.
Took the family out today for a trip to the seaside, longest drive I have done yet in the golf and surprise surprise all was not well  about the last 5miles of the journey the car started to make a really horrible rattling/banging sound.
So nursed it home and dropped it off at my garage and think it might be gearbox on its way out
There going to get it up on the ramps tomorrow and have a look.
If it is gearbox think I will get it re built with a longer 4th and 5th gear and get the fly wheel lighted and balanced so not all bad.
Had a few other bits delivered over the last few wks.

Has come up nice with a bit of a polish

Got this off ebay bit of an impulse buy but think I can make something that will look smart.

Think I like these? Will tell when I get them fitted.

Also got new splitter cos mine has seen better days.

Just need to find time to fit it all now.

Any comment welcome.

Going to change the 8v box for a recon abf box, lightened flywheel, uprated clutch and vibe engine mounts at same time.
Also got to change the gear leaver and mechanism so I've been told.
Anything else to be aware of?

02A box I'm guessing but just try and get all clutch and rods and sods before taking it on you will be surprised the extra cost of buying bits to make it work right!

Getting the car remapped in next couple of wks just have to get it booked in.
Talking the Gareth at map tech in brigg and he says 300bhp should be achievable its running around 270bhp at mo with hybrid k04 turbo.

To say the car is fast is understatement, its crazy fast, wheelspin in 3rd gear in dry at 60/70mph
300bhp should be fun

Will try and keep bit more up to date on here.
Thanks for looking.
