OBD11/VCDS Tweakery
« on: 11 August 2021, 14:26 »
Hi everyone. Still loving the ID3 and an £18pm fuel bill between 2 cars..

Anyway, there's not much OBD11 action on the ID3, everyone with the first software iterations had a poke around and were scared to alter anything. I decided to have a poke around today as i'm on 2.1 rather than 1 which had all the issues (similar to the MK8 Golf presumably).

My pet hate is lane assist. The twitch of the steering wheel back towards a parked car that you've gone wide to drive past is really unnerving, and if you can't keep within a lane then you really need to put the F'n phone down and stop texting on the move! I found a setting within the assistance systems module to make the car remember last setting, rather than the car putting it back on every ignition cycle by default - and it works.

Anyone here done any MK8 tweaks yet? Presumably they're on broadly similar module architecture so what works on one should work for the other?

That sounds interesting.... I thought the lane assist setting was in the SFD protected bit - or at least on the Golf. What did you set?

The only thing I've done is turn on the exit warning system, which is disabled on my GTI for some reason - the later ones its not.

Much of what you will want to tweak however will be in the SFD protected controllers...

After a kick up the derrière from Massimo a few months ago I dug out my trusty old VCDS cable to confirm the expected - it was too old to work with the mk8 generation ECUs.
I must get round to eBaying the thing one day as it’s the old unlimited VIN cables.

I’d not seen anything mentioned on here to inspire me to purchase a more up to date cable.

Good to hear you’re still enjoying the ID MH. Have you done your old marker post performance test as a comparison to your old GTD and R yet?

Just pulled from my post on the EV forum:-

How to have lane assist remember what it was last set to e.g. leave it off unless you want it on:-

Control Unit>A5 Assistance systems>configuration for lane departure warning>change "active" to "last setting" then ok>press and hold green tick to save it.

The mirror settings is on a toggle switch that cycles a light to each setting, but annoyingly, the car always forgets you left it on "L" last ignition cycle, so you have to remember to put it to L every journey if you want mirror dip on reverse ' is the MK8 like that or is there a physical switch like MK7 and everything before where you can see it physically set to L?

Anyway, it's annoying it forgets L for mirror dip. There are 3 settings in drivers door controller that look as though they would either make mirror dip on reverse or make the car remember last mirror settings:-

1 = memory mirror

2 = mirror lowering with rear gear

3 = position memory with rear gear

Neither one on its own or a combination of 2 or 3 of them seem to work.

There was a rumour that the difference between those with 2 zone climate and those with 1 zone is purely software on the ID3. Our Life has 1 zone and our Family spec has 2 zone. Set Life up as Family in aircon controller and still operating as 1 zone.

Activating travel assist asks for a 5 digit code.

My biggest annoyance - lane assist coming back every ignition cycle, is resolved, so that's a win for me.

Haven't done the marker test yet, I'm hardly ever up that way since some bright spark decided to remove the roundabout that allowed traffic to flow freely and replace it with a cross roads that makes my turn in a 3 minute wait on the lights cycle - genius!

My expectations are that it'll be somewhere between my old GTD and the Polo GTI. I'd say it's marginally slower than the Polo on a rolling start, but would kill it from a standstill (no tramping and phenomenal 0-30mph acceleration, like most EVs. The instant torque at any time (never in the wrong gear) is great, even if there's faster cars on the road

The mirror switch on the mk8 is an actual switch... One of the few!

I'll have a look at the lane assist tweak tommor. I don't think it will work but...

After the tweak, don't forget to actually turn  lane assist off to see if it stays off.

My dad is collecting a Mk4 Octy VRS Monday and one of the items listed on there was making the lane assist remember it’s settings. I know it will be set on my mk8 R when I get it. I upgraded my VCDS to one of the newer HEXNET wireless unlimited dongles as my old HEXCAN USB didn’t fully work with my 7.5 R 2019. It does the same as it used to except the firmware in the dongle can be changed. So far there is a VCDS beta out to access the SFP modules if you have a token. Just where do we get the tokens?

The tokens...you need to generate one from the vw geko system.

Basically you can't.

Read my post about sfd on here for more information...

I'm surprised this approach doesn't bring VW under scrutiny for anti-competition/consumer EU regulations. Once these cars go out of warranty, if you have need of a repair that's software based, you'll be at the mercy of the dealerships rather than going to your local independent VAG specialist garage. I thought the EU would be all over that.
