Title: New - Porthmadog
Post by: SionOnTheCob on 27 June 2021, 17:28
Evening all,

Long time VW owner, first GTI

3dr Carbon Steel Gray Metallic.  Few dings to sort out both exterior and interior.

I did have one issue when driving it home (5 hour journey!)

The coolant warning popped up, checked it and it was pretty low.  Topped it up this morning and it seems fine.  It feels like its running very hot, temp gauge is reading 90 but still feels hot.  The fan only runs when the engines on.  All other VWs I've owned, the fans run even after turning the engine off.  Is this a GTI thing??

Look forward to speaking to you all!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I'd get that issue looked at asap as the waterpump/thermostat housing is a common fail and rather expensive.

Hi Watts. Cheers for the welcome.

I got it from a VW dealership, I would have thought this would be something they'd check???  Although it was a 300mile journey home.

Just bad timing?

4-5 years is not unusual for the pump/thermostat housing to go. As yours is a MK7 it must be at least that. Do you have the full history? It might mention a replacement in there. Either way I'd report the issue urgently, you don't want them to wriggle out of their responsibility!

Your car looks great btw, nice to see a 3 door  DSG or manual?

I only picked it up on Saturday so thankfully it's still under warranty

Manual!  I fell in love right away. Shane about this issue though...

3 door manual is a great combination!

If it is as I said then it was fairly inevitable so good to have it whilst under warranty. Will give you some peace of mind.

Agreed. The kids will just have to get used to it!

Is it something that could give me problems if not sorted within a week or is it a slow burn?

Got it booked for Wednesday but I'm about an hour and a half journey to the nearest dealer..... :undecided:

I'm not in the position of being able to guarantee anything but if it was me, I'd just keep a close eye on the coolant level rather than wait for the car to tell me and probably not worry too much about it.

Finally got the car back after 3 days at VW

They found a leak in the waterpump/thermostat housing, they've replaced that and seems to be fine.

They also noticed a rattling (I did too when I picked the car up but thought nothing of it. Loose tool in the boot or something?)

Anyway, 3 hours of searching and they couldn't find anything....

Hope this isn't a dud of a car

Tha KS for the advice about the waterpump! Very much appreciated :nerd:

I'm pleased you're getting there  Rattles are very common and could be from anywhere. Can you be more specific? Interior or exterior? Does the car have DCC?

Yes it has DCC

Welcome along, I'm a relatively new face on here too.

Can't beat a manual 3 door GTI, I've just managed to get myself a 3dr manual Clubsport after a few years in an A4.

It also had the thermostat/waterpump replaced just before I bought it, as mentioned a common issue with the MK7.

Enjoy.

It's a massive upgrade from the GT TDi Mk7!

Very fun so far, it's a shame this waterpump issues has happened. I'm completely paranoid driving now. Still feels like it's running very hot. I had awful trouble with an A4 last year. Cost me £2k in repairs!  :undecided:
