When you turn the engine off the coolant tank empties?

Where does it go? It can't just vanish! You'd either get water or steam and lots of it surely?

If you left the engine running after a long drive and look at the tank, is it there? Then switch off, how soon does it empty?

Or are you just seeing it as a low coolant level warning on the dash next time you switch on?

BTW a quick Google suggests a faulty radiator cap has these symptoms - no visible leaks but coolant vanishes...

Sorry to hear about the problem, my oldest daughter had exactly the same with her low mileage 1.9tdi Touran.
Changed, checked and flushed everything but never got to the bottom of it, finally reckoned it could only be the head even though a test said otherwise.
That sick she got rid of it before actually having it done.  :embarrassed:

How old is the car and how long have you had the problem?

When you say turned away, presumably by independent garages? Why have they turned you away?

Also notice you've has lots of work done to tackle the problem, but haven't had a new radiator.

Is there any fluid under the car, or does the coolant appear to be evaporating?

Hi there everyone, thank you for replying so quick!

the car is a mk7 2013 gold gtd with 40k miles.

I went out for a 3 hour drive today and about 1:30 in my car shot up the empty coolant message again, so I pulled over and took pictures of what you can see of the water, the header tank is brand new so it isn’t that so just a little confused what it could be and could try replacing next.

So as you drive, the coolant escapes - it doesn't empty when you stop yes?

I'd definitely get a new rad cap immediately - its cheap and DIY....

By the looks of it you have head gasket failure!Read the thread on Golfmk7 forum about the guy asking the same questions as you.My GTD was the 1st known head gasket failure in the UK!Went through all the same parts as you have before taking the head off to find a blown gasket between cylinder 2 and its water jacket!
VW dealer and VAG specialists could not get to the cause of the fault.
