140 or 170 remapping??
« on: 05 January 2016, 15:00 »
Hello, I'm new to this forum so I apologise in advance. I'm looking to buy my first golf mk5 but I'm struggling to pick either the 140 or 170. Ino the 140 has a more solid engin and the 170 has power but would apriacate so e advice from owners who have had this decision. I'm wanting 200 bhp but I'm also wanting about 60 mpg ish as I use the car daily and need good fuel return. Please help

You'll get 200BHP from just a remap from a 170. You'll need a few other modifications to take the 140 to 200BHP.

I've owned a 170 A4 (Essentially the same engine) with a hybrid turbo, whilst I loved it; if I was to do it again I'd go for a 140. Much more of a solid engine from the start.

thanks for the info, would i get more mpg from a mapped 140 or 170 if i just wanted fuel economy.  ino hybrids play a big part and are good for fuel, im doing 40 ish miles a day on A roads so need good mpg (but wouldnt mind the power). im going to have a look at a mk5 140 gt tdi 119,000 new turbo just put on so just going to give it a go to see what its like.

140 gives better MPG

Depends what you really want from the car

On a run my 170 will crack 50mpg; around town expect high 30's, early 40's

I went from a remapped MK4 130tdi so I couldn't go backwards in power

I went to look at a golf and ended up talking about the salemans seat Leon 170 tdi that he had, I told him I was wanting at least 180 to 200bhp he said get a hybrid turbo or send your turbo unit to aet turbos then they'll stick the spool of a hybrid 240bhp spool in your turbo for only £400 and you'll still get atleast 60mpg is any of this true? If so what would a standard 140 clutch be safe until as well as injectors?

Kaboom lol

Clutch will be toast and your injectors way past their efficiency if you are looking anywhere over 220bhp

A 140 on with a map alone will make a solid 175bhp+ / 300lbs ft torquw providing the turbo is in good condition. That will be clutch friendly

If you want over 200bhp without major hassle then buy a 170, gut the DPF and map it

My A3 runs 205bhp / 320lbs ft torque in that configuration and is on the original clutch after 65,000 mapped miles

140 it is then lol  I asked Hume what his car was like and he said his car was matte black seat Leon in fast car magazine running 220bhp a while ago, tried searching but I've had no look. I'm doing a lot of committing to my gf and back and covering around 40 ish miles a day. So tbh mpg means more than bhp and 170 alone would do me fine👍. What's the best air filter, exhaust etc to run as I'm wanting the r32 rear end.

I've decided I'm getting the 140 gt tdi, but I'm wanting 230bhp I've been told to get stage 2 hybrid turbo, remap, s3 intercooler, hard piping, egr delete/ blank, decat exhaust system and induction kit? Is this true? Or am I being very optimistic??
