Title: Post tune engine oil runs loads cooler
Post by: Ben7.5GTI on 28 August 2021, 21:41
So just over 2 weeks ago now I had my mk7.5 Golf GTI remapped with the APR Stage 1 tune. The car made a decent amount of power on the dyno and is all working as expected apart from the oil temps. On the whole I drive the car in a very 'sensible' manor and rarely stick my foot down.

Usually temps when driving the car pre tune were around the 105 celsius mark, but post tune I the most I have got to is 91c and that was from giving it the beans on a dual carriage way going from round about to round about. The average I see is around the 85 mark maybe a tad highly, which puts the car running 15-20 degrees cooler. From doing some digging on google it seems common for people to have 5-10 degrees cooler temps post tune but not what I am experiencing. I've spoken to APR and all they said was to put another temp gauge on the car and see what that says.. not very helpful.

I have the car booked in to have the issue checked over by the people who tuned it, but I'm wondering whether I am just being overly cautious and worrying unnecessarily.

Do I take it to be looked at, or is it just a benefit that the car is running cooler?

Should say that all other temps are normal, the only change it the oil.

The coolant temperature will likely be a bit cooler as well but there's no reason to take the car in to "check over" something that isn't an issue.

Having the oil temperature lower isn't a problem, such high targets were set by VW likely to aid with emissions, having cars running hotter, leaner all to be more "clean" in a sense.

The coolant temp looks bang on what it was pre tune. I agree that if its not an issue then it doesn't need to be checked, I suppose it should have asked the question whether the lower oil temp is an issue or not? I don't know if at these new lower temps if the oil is going to have the best viscosity and I've read things online about having the temps just over 100 so any condensation build up is boiled off.

It won't lead to any issues, internal engine temperatures exceed 100c which will in effect burn off any moisture within the oil even if the overall oil temperature is lower.

I have been running my car for over 25000 miles now with lower than standard oil temperatures and had zero issues.

Okay man, thanks for the help! Appreciate it!
