There’s a really useful topic over on the R forum where members post pictures and links to items they’ve bought for their R. I’ve got a few links to things like the warning triangle and a few ideas for door sill protectors. Wondered if this might be a good idea for our Mk8s. Feel free to add or ignore!

Then this topic was worth it! Just need to find some protectors for the actual door sill now. Not a fan of the Lockwood ones.

Sorry slight mistake it was £47 plus £10 delivery. dont know if it was a one off, but you could check out his ebay user name to see if he has more

Thanks. I’ve just had a quick look but couldn’t find it. Good idea though. I’ll certainly keep my eyes out for one.
-
Yes keep looking. I searched everyday for a couple of weeks. Something always turns up

Just use boli_32 when searching on eBay. It brings them up and they have a few bits on but no space saver. Shame as I’m after one too.

That’s what I did. Meant that I couldn’t find it on his account. I’ll get the hang of writing coherent sentences one day.
-
Good idea for the thread Michele :afro:
I’ve been exceptionally slack about even contemplating buying bits for the car (I’m a changed man!) and to be honest when I got mine there wasn’t a lot available for it.
How about some retailer links in the first post to some of the better suggestions from VWROC for those of us that don’t venture there (owing to being about as popular as a dog turd through a letterbox on that forum) as non R owners?
Some inspiration wouldn’t go amiss to us waverers
Oh, I like the Clubsport sill trims posted up btw
-
Thanks Andy. I’ll have a look and pop some things in from the R forum. Glad you like the Clubsport sill trims.
-
Good work getting the links up so quickly :afro:
I quite like the black mirror caps.
I’m really keen on the sill trims, it’s be nice to have something that actually said ‘Clubsport’ on the car!
Like yourself I’d like some actual sill protectors too. No matter how careful I am I tend to get light marks on the sill when exiting in tight spaces.
VW dealers used to do a black foil kit for mk7’s that might go well with the Clubsport logo trims.
-
I try!
I’ve got my eyes on these:

I had similar sill protectors to those Amazon ones on my mk7 Clubsport, they were genuine VW ones though.
Hopefully as the world slowly returns to what it was and the mk8 hits more markets there will be more demand for aftermarket accessories and supply of tailor made parts will be better.
-
Fitted these to mine very happy with the quality and fit they have the extra lip for the MK 8 and some carbon tape fir the rest ... Big old sill def needs protection!!!

These turned up this morning , and I think they look better than the gel plates. The plates were £45 & the surrounds were £20 . Money well spent

Nice  That car looks great!
Are the mirror caps tricky to fit? Does the lane assist indicators make them a bit more awkward? Mirror glass out first?

Nope the lane assist just unclips and clips straight into the new one, didn’t take the mirror glass out...if you tilt the mirror you can see the 2 clips to undo for removal,a tool to undo them came with the mirror caps.
-
Mirror caps look great.
-
I do like the look of those and, even more, I like the fact that they sound relatively easy to fit.
The ebay link photos show a slight carbon effect but in your pics they look pure black. Are there a carbon lines in them?
I think I'd prefer pure black tbh.
Thanks

Their pretty reasonable at full price £14.99 for the wax which I thought was good should last a while too. I was really impressed with it easy to put on and take off and only been in the rain once and it definitely did its job. All the reviews I've found on it have said how good it is
-
I’m thinking of buying some genuine VW dynamic wheel caps.
Does anybody know if the part number 000071213D will fit the CS 45 alloys? The official golf 8 brochure states part number 000071213C, however, these appear to be the old (thicker) style VW badge?

I have the same brand of boot liner in my Polo GTI+. IMHO it’s much better than the genuine VW boot liners, and significantly cheaper too.

Will do. The pricing of them has been stupid recently but I’ve been in constant contact with the seller. He must be glad to get rid of me!
-
What have you got them for? The ones that are the same and I am watching are £64.
-
£70.80. There are a few different ones (red edging, gti logo only on front mats etc). I’ve been watching them for ages and they were £59 originally, then they went to an amazing £664. When I asked the seller they told me it was because they only had a few left in stock. Crackers answer. Anyway, i said I’d wait for new stock and surprise surprise when the ‘new stock’ came they’re £6 more than all the other gti mats they’re selling. A little cheeky if you ask me.
Anyway, still went for them as I couldn’t find them anywhere else. I’ve gone for the gti logo on all four mats but no red edging.

I must admit I do prefer those vinyl sill protectors to aluminium scuff plates.
-
Yeah so do I tbh. I was a bit gutted when I saw them as I’d just bought the Lockwood ones myself but these are £45 which I think is pretty poor value. The vinyl ones I have on my R, which are identical to the EZMods ones, where £12 from eBay.

Agree, that doesn’t look great. I see the manufacturer of the mats has stuck with the old style ‘GTI’ font that VW used for the badges on the mk7 / mk7.5 GTI and previous generations of GTI. As the logo looks as if it’s a separate item that’s stuck in place, it would have been good if they’d used a separate logo insert in the correct font for mk8 mats so they matched the car’s badging.
Old style font - mk7.5 and earlier;

New style font - mk8;

-
The front one is an insert but the back isn’t. Odd.
-
cancel that...
-
I’m probably going to give them a chance to rectify it before I ask for a refund. They’re pretty slow in getting back to you though.
-
So after saying that I’d need a refund if the mats are right next time they’re sending me a new set and don’t want the old ones returning. Actually makes me more suspicious! 😂
-
Not for my Mk8 but just bought these…

I believe this one doesn’t catch as it mounts in a different point to other struts available. There’s a Volkswizard video of the installation on YouTube which shows this.
-
Here’s the video.
https://youtu.be/a0z2RrHn2io
-
It doesn’t catch anything.
However I don’t think it’s as strong as the OEM one in the MK7. The bonnet seems to open quicker than it should and shudders a bit at the top. So you’d nearly want to keep a light hold of it as it opens. Similarly when closing it does drop quicker than I’d like, once it passes the half way down mark.
Still - way better than the manual strut which I also removed.

I had these in a box since before I got the car and only got round to them today. I was somewhat hesitant to attempt it as I know its easy to break the glass in the process, but I actually managed to do it without removing the glass at all! Very pleased with the result, I think they look smart...

Anyone know what the wiper blades are from factory. 3k miles in and my drivers side one is making the most annoying sound all the time when it’s going. Tried everything to stop it but must be the blade.

Mine was exactly the same. Drivers side making horrible noises all the time, even when it was chucking it down. I got this as it has great reviews. https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/bosch-aerotwin-flat-wiper-blade-single-ap26u-485777267. No more noise and seems to do a better job than the factory one.
I think the factory ones are Bosch too but a slightly different model.
-
Factory wiper blades are usually Valeo.
-
I’ve had these sitting in a box for months, only fitted them this week, thanks to a lot of help from a mate. It’s a fairly straightforward DIY job really. Delighted with them, it’s another thing that VW should have fitted from the factory. I’m much more inclined to use manual mode now.

Are these the R ones? If so I believe you have to take the steering wheel off?
-
Yes, they’re the R paddles. No, you only need to remove the airbag (basically the centre piece of the wheel where you press the horn). This pops off quite easily, you just need to release 3 clips on the back of the wheel. Once you’ve that off you need to gently prise off the silver trim, it’s just clipped in. Once that’s off, the existing paddles are easily removed by undoing a Torx screw for each one and disconnecting them. The new paddles fit in exactly the same way.
Oh, other thing we did is remove the fuse for the horn. It kept going off and nearly giving us heart attacks / temporary deafness when removing the airbag!
Everything went back together 100% and no dash errors. I’d say it took about 20-25 mins.
Volkswizard has a video on it.
-

Main dealer prices for them are ridiculous. I bought them here - https://www.cars-equipment.com/en/shop/switches-buttons-trims/oem-5h0951527-5h0951528-sport-dsg-paddles/
-
That's not bad actually. I might be tempted at that price.

I know of a local indie VW specialist who got wind of a few of us here (in Ireland) sourcing them from that particular supplier and he went and bought a load of them in bulk and now advertises it as a MK8 upgrade, fitted, for less than the price that main dealers charge for the parts.

Thanks for the info Joe. I might actually have a go at those. I need to stop buying stuff though. So far I’ve bought:
RL gas strut
Gti rubber mats
Lockwood door sill protectors
Carbon inserts for door sill inserts which I’m getting some Clubsport decals for too.
-
I have the RL gas strut too. Highly recommend it, it looks very OEM too. That’s my preference tbh, mods that look like they were factory fit.
I do have my eye on some nice sill plates from a guy in Germany, he’s active on Instagram…

Ah thanks for that, I knew I'd seen some somewhere and spent some time this week trying to find them and you've just solved the mystery. I wonder if there will be an illuminated one, it's one of the subtleties from my current car that is a shame hasn't carried over to the MK8, these might have to do though.

Unfortunately I think illuminating them would be difficult, it’d definitely require some auto-electrical skills!

Can’t remember if it was in this chat or not but someone was mentioning boot liners as I was also looking for one.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-GOLF-MK8-Plastic-Boot-Liner-for-vehicle-with-basic-floor-5H0061161A-/265484186434?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
Genuine VW garage selling these for £14.99. Mentions basic luggage compartment but I can’t find anywhere on the internet that says it won’t fit a variable luggage compartment like my GTi. Anyway, for £14.99 it’s worth a punt and thought others might think so too. Normally £50-£60 for genuine one. Only 3 left. Watch someone tell me it won’t fit mine!
-
Just been emailed by the VW garage selling the above. He says won’t fit a variable boot compartment like the GTi! Doh! The picture looks like it would fit the lower part.
Anyway he has issued a refund. I’m wondering if this actually true or someone has messed up on the pricing!

Has anyone fitted these to there Golf yet? I've just received some for my Edition 45 this morning, opted for the '45' decal. Please post any pictures if you have fitted, I'm waiting for a build week on my Edition 45 still.

Mr Chapple at Volkswizard has done a step by step installation - looks like something even I could do!

Upon close inspection the quality is quite poor, not that impressed I'm afraid. The stickers arent mounted straight, sharp swarf on the edges of the plates and inconsistent cutout.
I'm running an UP GTI at the moment as a temporary until my Edition 45 arrives, I spotted the stainless steel sill protectors on this yesterday and had a brainwave that they may fit the Golf...Any comments from anyone? (Maybe if anyone had a Mk8 and I gave them the dims of the sill protector they could measure the sill to see if they'd fit?)
-
Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated. That’s a real shame as they looked really good. I’ve got some cheap carbon type ones coming which are plain. I’ve sourced some Clubsport stickers to apply and I’ll see how they look. Shame I couldn’t find any 45 stickers.

I think I’d prefer the carbon type ones or a set black vinyl sill protectors. If the metal scuff plates happened to get scuffed, that’d not be good for my car OCD.
My last car came with black vinyl sill protectors from the factory and if they did occasionally get marked, a quick wipe over with some trim dressing soon restored them to an ‘as new’ state.

The dimensions are ; 550mm length, 35mm width.

I’m assuming your up! is a 3 door?
The Golf’s sill is approx 550mm long between where it starts to curve upwards, it’s pretty close though. Maybe a 5 door up! GTI sill protector would be better length wise.
The 35mm would fit fine *but* the Golf has a slight crease running the full length of that part of the sill meaning it’s almost dual level. If the tape on the back of the sill trim was really thick it would be fine but if it was just thin double sided sticky tape (like carpet tape) then there would be issues. In other words it would be a bit of a bodge.

Thank you! No, mine is a 5 door...so, I can see it being quite tight....
Could I trouble you for an image of your front door sill? I think I know the step your referring to, perhaps I'd need to experiment with some thicker, foam double sided tape....
-
Hopefully you can view the pics of the door sill above?
White on a grey day isn’t ideal and the sills are still a bit damp after a wash this morning
-
Sorry, missed them initially. I see what your referring to know with the step in height. I'm now considering getting my own made to a narrower width that sits on the front lower section of exposed sill...I can get custom cut stainless steel then apply with a double sided foam tape..just need to find someone to cut me some vinyls now, debating Clubsport or 45 graphics....
-
Custom would be the best option to ensure quality and getting a style you’re 100% happy with

Morning all, just wanted to obtain how many owners of Mk8 Golf GTIs would be interested if I was to pursue a custom door sill plate? To be clear these would be mounted on the painted sill, not the plastic moulding.

I thought there were some available already - sure I have seen them on here...

Some interesting work-arounds being discussed here. I have owned an Up GTI for nearly 3 years and I can’t see one of their GTI kick plates being the answer: the doors on the 3 door Up are loooong so I highly doubt them plates fitting within a Golf 8’s 5 door frame. Equally the 5 door Up plates will look stupidly out of place in terms of length.
Step in the facelifted Polo A0 GTI. As a result of some classic ill-judged equipment spec decisioning from VW, the Polo GTI gets the kick plates pictured below as STANDARD. Just how the Up GTI does.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Hx6YZzjc/377-B01-AD-7-C22-4-F97-8-AAE-1856-C4-B4-C3-C6.png) (https://postimg.cc/hz7Rh9Lc)
Pros:
- Current Polo is similar in dimensions to Golf 8 and is 5 door only. I’m not sure on exact door sill measurements but being an MQB car it won’t be far away. It may even look made to measure when fitted.
- Facelifted Polo GTI gets the updated GTI font so there is continuity with Golf 8 GTI’s design, as the pic demonstrates.
- OEM VW quality can be trusted and they’d look well at home I think. That can’t be said for most of the ghastly aftermarket options.
Cons:
- OEM VW parts price premium
- While the pic is a screenshot from the online shop of a VW dealership group in Germany, it isn’t possible to order directly from these guys (extra postage admin caused by Brexit I think). So it’ll require a trip/call to your local VW dealer.
- I also don’t have an accurate part number so it may take a conversation with the parts manager to ensure the rights ones are ordered… unless anybody is a member of a Polo forum or someone has access to ETKA?
Discuss!

We are on the same vein here! I also spotted the Polo GTI ones, they are €89 each! (Confirmed with my VW dealer contact in Germany) I like the fact they are OEM and have the new GTI logo font. I'm just waiting on him to confirm there not illuminated as in the UK spec it says they are...if there not, we could be onto a nice little workaround here!

Yep, they are what I found. I wasn’t sure if that was the Original VW parts number or an internal dealer order number (so didn’t want to quote incorrectly to cause confusion).
The ones in that pic are certainly not illuminated and I have never heard any mention of the Polo getting illuminated door sills. I’m guessing that was a translation error for VW UK.
Here is the product info from that German retailer, translated into English:

Looks like we’ve found a good OEM option for the Golf 8! Yes it is weird that the Polo, and even my Up GTI has them fitted as standard. Classic case of VW designers taking Golf buyers for granted I think, it’s happened for years with the mk7 too. If it weren’t for the OEM Polo work-around then I’d miss them in my new (3x as expensive) Golf. Such is life and such is VW!
-
I asked a friend to look them up on EKTA. €119 each! That's Irish prices, so I'd guess approx £100 each in UK.

That is for a set of 2, for the front sills.
I can get for 175 euros for a pair, approx 145 GBP.
Or, you can wait to see the ones I am getting made from brushed 316 Grade Stainless Steel with GTI logo etched and painted in Tornado Red....?

The cut out for the plastic kick plate on MK8 is just under 485mm long and about 27mm wide from a quick measurement.

Thanks. To clarify though, the Polo GTI cill plates mount onto the painted section of the cill, not the recessed area in the plastic moulding.
-
You can kinda see it on DB99's pic, the painted cill on the Golf has a very slight raised ridge, ie. its not completely flat, although having checked my own just now, its not that far off being flat.
If the Polo's cill plate doesn't account for that slight ridge (if the Polo doesn't have the same ridge), then it may not sit perfectly on the Golf's cill, but I reckon it would be damn close.
Apart from that, I can't see why they wouldn't work fine.
Someone with access to a Polo could compare the cills with those of a Golf. It doesn't need to be a GTI Polo.

I have a Polo at my house! The Polo certainly doesn’t have the little ledge like Golf 8. So maybe they wouldn’t fit perfectly flush ☹️

-
Would the adhesive foam tape on the cills not be enough to mean the small ledge won't cause an issue?
-
I'd say they'd still work. The ledge is pretty shallow.
Only one way to know for sure....

What do we think of these paddle extensions as a cheap alternative to the R ones? £52.

They are certainly some of the best ‘fakes’ I’ve seen and at first glance I thought they were OEM. So many of the tuner paddles look completely out of place with the massive, sharp aluminium (which I wouldn’t fancy head-butting in the event of a crash…)

Will be a while if I wait for my Edition 45, no confirmed build week yet! I may have to find another Mk8 to test them on....

Yeah I’m not a fan of most of the non OEM paddles.
Those ones aren’t the worst I’ve seen but I just don’t like that they clip onto the existing paddles. Looks a bit naff imo.
For the sake of another 50 quid… on a 40k car, get the genuine R paddles imo.
-
I was thinking of getting the R ones, it’s a shame racingline haven’t produced any properly fitted ones yet (if at all).
I think those look ok, but I’m not a fan of the stick or screw on extensions.
-
I think I agree that the genuine R ones are better. Think it’s the fact that they’re proper paddles rather than an extension that I like.
-
Spotted these this AM, I'm the sort that much prefers an OEM+ modification, has anyone had any experience in retro fitting them to your Mk8 steering wheel?

They’re here for quite a bit cheaper - https://www.cars-equipment.com/en/shop/switches-buttons-trims/oem-5h0951527-5h0951528-sport-dsg-paddles/. That’s where I got mine. I have fitted them to my CS. I had a post on it in this thread few pages back.

That's because they are OEM  They're factory fitted to the MK8 R.

I’m going to buy the R ones. More money spent. Not sure thank you is the right word.

could you confirm, €110 is for both parts?
-
Yes, €110 total, plus a bit for delivery. I'd recommend opting for their more expensive delivery option (FedEx / DHL) as the cheapest option is slow - takes several weeks. Which is fine if you're not in a rush for them I suppose.
-
Does anyone know if you can swap out the haptic steering wheel buttons on the Clubsport for actual buttons on the lesser models and still have all of the functionality?
-
Does anyone know if you can swap out the haptic steering wheel buttons on the Clubsport for actual buttons on the lesser models and still have all of the functionality?
No you can't - its a different steering wheel and some of the functions aren't available.
-
I'd say that is unlikely - are the same wheel functions available and are the buttons in exactly the same place?
Would probably be easier to fit a whole new wheel although that might not work either.
Personally I'm fine with haptic buttons.

Thank you. I’ve ordered a set.

Sorry, not looked at the fitting guide but can you just advise if you can swap without removing the steering wheel? (The biggest drawback if so)

You have to remove the airbag and the silver/red plastic trim (with the haptic buttons). It’s easier than it sounds.

Golf R paddles ordered today.
-
Would anyone know if the paddles as fitted to the 2021 Audi RS3 fit a Mk8 Golf Wheel?
(I have one on demo at the moment and the paddles are quite nice)

Just over 3 weeks since I ordered my R paddles. People weren’t joking when they said they take ages to come.

Oh and I’ve sent my Lockwood door sill protectors to be customised. Pictures when they come back.

Mine too, tracking says left Czech Republic 19/01/22, “ More information will be available when it arrives in the UK”.
If you paid for cheapest deliver like me, the tracking number works in Royal Mail website (in case you didn’t know).
Which I’d paid a bit more for delivery now, expected them to beat the car here, now I’m not sure as I’ve had an email today saying it’s arrived at UK port.
My dynamic centre caps have arrived from Germany though. They look great.

Those paddles do take 4-5 weeks if you pick the cheapest delivery option.

Well actually, I thought I’d check just now if there’s any update. It says that item was received in uk this afternoon and left international processing at Heathrow at 7pm today.
Hopefully arrive in the next few days.

For anyone who’s interested, EZMods are doing a CS45 specific sun visor delete for me. Pictures when they send the mock up.

Honestly guys, I can’t recommend EZMods enough. Eugene has been brilliant to deal with. He’s now put Clubsport 45 specific sun visor label deletes on their website in either red or black. I sent him the worst logo ever to work with and he’s come up with some great stuff. He’s also doing some interior decals which I have plans for the trim inserts.

I like the 45 decals, are they what EZ Mods made for you?
Do you have a metal foot rest?
-
I took the footrest out of my R.
The decals were done by EZMods and only cost £14 for the 4. They’re great and as I’ve said before, I don’t know how he made them based on the rubbish image I sent him. You have to be really careful when applying them as they’re a bit delicate though. The sill inserts came from eBay.
-
I was going to put a picture up but it’s not working….
Anyway, fitted the R paddles this morning, honestly it’s not difficult at all, remove the horn fuse as Joe said and take your time. Happy to advise on procedure if anyone requires support?

I would certainly be curious to know Carl, if not to much inconvenience..DM me if easier.
-
Great work Carl. I’d like info too!!!!
-
Its really pretty straightforward.
Remove the fuse for the horn (fuse box under the bonnet) and take your time.
Pop off the airbag (there are 3 spring release clips at the back of the wheel) and once off, just unplug it and leave it to one side. Don't worry, it doesn't cause any dashboard errors once its re-connected.
The silver/red plastic trim is only clipped on but takes some gentle persuasion to prise off. Start at one corner, tug gently with your fingers (around the haptic buttons on one side) and once you have that side freed, the rest is easier.
Once the trim is off, you'll see the Torx screws you will need to undo to remove the existing paddles. You also need to unplug them. The new paddles are a direct swap, same torx screw, same plugs.
Put everything back in reverse order!
It's well worthwhile doing, makes the wheel look so much better and the paddles are really nice in the hand to use.
-
Thanks for this. Run out of time this weekend. I’ll do it as soon as I can.

Thanks for this, I'm very tempted....but, at the same time, I'd be worried about damaging or breaking something or it not being possible to put back together like factory....

Exactly as Joe has said there.
The only point I’d add because it confused me at first.
The airbag springs, there’s a round peg and a straight bar going through, you use a terminal screwdriver to leaver the bar towards the centre of the steering wheel. I used my phone camera on “selfie” to see what I was doing. There’s also, three not two as volkswizard said.
Also, if you unluck the steering wheel reach adjuster, pulled fully out and fully downwards will give you maximum space.
Lastly, as joe also said, on a fast twisty road (I’ve been out today) the difference is massive, so much nicer to use through the gears. Oh… and if you’ve it tried, “special” mode on a twist road is fantastic!! I am thinking of OBD11 to disable the sound imitation thing though.

Does anyone know if there is any company that supplies rubber liners for the door pockets for mk8 Golf.
Any replies appreciated and thanks in advance.

I’m so glad other people are buying these. Eugene was brilliant to work with.

I’m considering asking for quotes to see if the matt black bits (front grill, skirts and “defuser”) could be vinyl wrapped in gloss black.
What’s the opinions, would it work or would it look naff? I’d only do it if it looked great, no half jobs.
-
One of the big main dealers in Dublin has been doing a “black pack” on these cars, basically getting the matt black plastic bits all painted gloss black and the mirror caps. It does look well in photos I’ve seen but haven’t seen it in the metal. I’d wonder how well it looks up close or how it’ll stand up to wear and tear. Gloss black shows up every mark!
(https://i.postimg.cc/Cxgw9yKG/838-D54-D5-DA44-4176-A9-D8-13-A522-B6092-C.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
-
Great find. I always thought the CS45 black bits would be gloss so when the car was officially revealed I was surprised. But, must admit, I’m not sure about that look in the photo. It makes it look a little like the R. Wonder how much they charge for this?
-
Silver shows it up better. Dunno what they charge, I’d be curious myself. But to do that job properly is fairly labour intensive so it can’t be too cheap. My concern as I said is how it holds up. That’s a lot of gloss black on the front… stone chips will love it.

-
You’re right. That looks a lot better against the Reflex. Really nice idea. The gloss black front end on my R never caused a problem but I’d be worried about the quality of the job as you say.
-
On my Mk8 R I got all the Gloss Black trim on front and rear bumpers covered in PPF, quite an expensive task
Think I will leave mine as the textured plastic, won't harm my OCD then!
-
I think it looks good, thanks for sharing. I’m not sure about getting it done though. My thoughts are like yours regarding stone chips 😬. There also the thought of a lot of time drying the front grill after washing to avoid water spots on all the horizontal pieces.
Maybe it’s a job for when the car is a little older as a midlife spruce up. For the time being I think I’ll stick to the bumper and trim gel.
-

Yeah I’m inclined to agree. That gloss / piano black finish will scratch if you look sideways at it. The gloss black parts of the wheels are bad for it so can you imagine trying to keep on top of the front end… you’d see new marks every time you wash it.
I find trim gel / restorer pretty effective. Being using Autopia tyre/trim gel recently and it’s very effective and long lasting.

For anyone who’s interested (and I promise I don’t work for them!) Eugene at EZMods is currently working on some vinyl door sill protectors. Presume he’ll have all variations of performance Golf ones including 45.

Out of interest, how long did the job take you?
-
About 45 mins I’d say. But I was really taking my time and being gentle with the trim.
Once it’s apart you’ll understand what everyone (volkswizard mainly) says about the way the cars are designed to put together on a production line it went back together in 5 mins tops.
I meant to say before, the tip on the you tube video about starting the screws off the steering wheel was genius. If you look at the new paddles the fixing whole is unthreaded because the screw “cuts” the plastic as it’s going in, so if you screw in and back out in your hand it’s so much simpler to screw in again when in place on the wheel.
-

Are you sure you’ve not been moonlighting Michele?
After seeing your pics of the other (CS45) decals you commissioned from them I had a quick nose at their website. I see they currently offer mk8 sill protectors but they show a mk7.5 sill in the photos which is different to a mk7 (seems odd being as it’s basically the same chassis and shared panels) so be wary if anyone is purchasing direct from their website.
I’m a fan of vinyl sill protectors as some of the other metal and plastic aftermarket ones I’ve tried have trapped water between the sill and underside of the door on mk7’s. Decent vinyl ones are effective if less glamorous.
Going back to the glossy black bumper grilles, sills and diffusers, again, they look nice and arguably more expensive as the matte black/grey looks a bit plasticky BUT if your car is a daily driver used on rural roads then the matte is far more practical and durable. My old Ed40 canards looked as bad for tiny swirl marks as those gloss B pillar trims all Golfs have had for generations end up looking after a short time. And that car was treated like a Princess, hardly used, always garaged and only ever cleaned very symathetically as regards to swirl prevention. Admittedly for someone less fussy they’d not notice from a few feet away after the first specs of dust inevitably land on the car but us car people care about small things like that. My mk8 Clubby is used daily, lives outdoors (cleaned weekly at the minimum if weather permits though) and I’m very glad it has matte lower plastic sections. I’ve just learned to be less of a fanny about it.

For anyone who’s interested (and I promise I don’t work for them!) Eugene at EZMods is currently working on some vinyl door sill protectors. Presume he’ll have all variations of performance Golf ones including 45.

You got me! I get 1p commission for every 1000 orders they get. I’ll pay that car off in no time Andy! The photos of the vinyl sill protectors are for illustrative purposes only I presume as I know he’s working on them. Im also a big fan of the vinyl protectors as they’re bullet proof.

Thanks for the info Carl. Really appreciate it. I didn’t want to start a job and have to leave it halfway through.

King monkey, it’s as if we discussed these at length as to how to do them and even use the same guy. Think they look good.

Unfortunately the illuminated strip is a different size in the Mk8. I know because I tried my Mk8 inserts on the 7.5 R.

Before I jump in and make a mess, I’ve had a look at the steering wheel for the R paddles. What on the photo is supposed to move. The metal piece or the black metal clip (hard to see in the photo.)

I fitted mine yesterday and was a bit apprehensive on this part of the process.
Its black metal clip, it moves towards the centre of the steering wheel, and the airbag will pop out once moved. I think there are three to do, but I did the two either side and the third popped out.
As mentioned before, move the steering wheel as far down and out as possible (using the height adjuster) and I removed the cowling on top of the steering column which gave a bit more access for the clips (as per the Volkswizard video)
-
There’s a metal bar (green line). Your screwdriver goes in there (red) and levers the bar from behind the airbag clip.
As per Baylon’s comment, the bar moves towards the centre and therefore the back of the screwdriver needs to be pushed outwards (away from centre).
I wish I’d took a picture of the wheel without the airbag and of the airbag from behind, would have been so much clearer.

Are you certain the two plugs were back in place correctly? They click when back in.
Other than that, did you unplug with the ignition on? If so, it might have logged an error code that needs to be reset?

Thanks for the reply Carl. It all felt clipped it and I don’t remember having the ignition on. There’s no errors logged in the vehicle status menu just when you start it up. I’m leaving it until tomorrow now I think. Any ideas welcome. Wonder how I’d clear the code?
-
I also got an airbag warning error, but I may have had the ignition on when I unplugged the airbag as Carl_45 mentioned. I managed to clear the error after I reassembled everything by using the OBDeleven dongle /app. It has been fine since.
-
Good to know that Baylon. Did you not have any errors in the vehicle status menu either?
-

There may have been others, but I don't remember what they were, I just ran the scan and cleared the errors, and the airbag light went off. Sorry I can't be more help than that, I was just glad the airbag light went off!

No. It’s really useful to know. I might just buy obdeleven. It’s going to come in handy I reckon.
-
Hope you get it fixed, if you’re not getting one, hopefully someone on here is close by that could help you with OBD 11 without paying VW some extortionate amount to plug in and press reset.
On the lighter side…. Looking forward to your thoughts about the new paddles, I think they’re great to use but I never really gave the old ones a chance to be honest.
-
Had the light turned off on Wednesday. Didn’t cost me anything either so can’t complain. Thanks again to everyone for your advice as usual, especially with the removal of the airbag clips. Your pictures and instructions made it a lot easier.
As for the paddles themselves, wow they are great. They feel a lot better to use and don’t have that click of the originals. It’s a far more solid feel. I tend to change gear by using the bottom of the paddle which I find out but there you go! I’d advise everyone to get them tbh.
-
So bought and used this today. Had a really annoying creaking noise on the handle where I rest my knee on it when driving, I am 6’2 so makes it more comfortable for me! It has made the noise go away instantly. My only concern is how long for. We will see. Some might say WD40 will have done the same, maybe but didn’t want to use it. Oh and as always, thanks to King Monkey for the recommendation.

You are very welcome! Good to hear it worked.
You not posting a picture of your key fob? 😉

So another recommendation by King Monkey is the badgeskins key cover. Basically just a front and back adhesive skin that goes over to protect it. I like it but will let King Monkey come along and give his, valid I should add, thoughts on them.

Basically they protect the key really well but they set my ocd off a bit. Unfortunately, the skin doesn’t quite fit the fob exactly, meaning that a tiny edge of the fob is exposed all the way round and on both sides.
-
They’re here for quite a bit cheaper - https://www.cars-equipment.com/en/shop/switches-buttons-trims/oem-5h0951527-5h0951528-sport-dsg-paddles/. That’s where I got mine. I have fitted them to my CS. I had a post on it in this thread few pages back.

Glad you like them Carl. Hope all is well after last week!
As for the font, I braced myself and took the plunge for £4! 🤣

be careful of those things, a good few people had similar ones fitted to their MK7 R's and I saw a few reports of them scuffing the paint underneath over time, even causing surface rust.

A very small addition today. Ordered an airbag delete sticker from EZmods. On request he reproduced one I had bought from him several years ago. In minutes he had it done and added to the web site. Really good service from Eugene. I think king monkey commented on this recently too. Excuse the awful picture.

I was going to buy a couple of these, but decided to replace the whole visor with a LHD one from AliExpress,, a bit of a PITA to fit but worth it in my opinion, the visors are exactly the same as the mk7 ones, although the Mk8 ones are a tad lighter in shade, but you’d never know once it’s fitted, the mk7 version appears to be better quality too. £17.23 | 5GG857551 Black Front Sun Visor Panel With Makeup Mirror For VW Golf 7 SportsVan Jetta MK7 T-Cross Passat B8 CC E-Golf T-Roc

Apologies if this is the same as what you found, but see below...

Happy to be the Guinea pig here and order some up to check if they'd work.....(Will have to speak sweetly to my local dealer to see if he would let me offer upto a Mk8 as mine is still waiting for a confirmed build date)
These are 480mm long and 36mm wide....
The cut out for the plastic kick plate on MK8 is just under 485mm long and about 27mm wide from a quick measurement.

I am staggered to see a piece of black plastic instead of an actual kickplate on the GTI. Serious cost cutting there! Even a non-illuminated one would of been ok

Bit fruitier on cold start. Pretty quiet at idle. Definitely louder in the cabin but doesn’t seem to be droney (yet to test on the m’way). Not sure what it’s like from the outside but I think it’s a decent compromise of ‘more’ without being anti-social. I like the look it gives the black end.

Has the new filter changed the sound at all?
-
Yeah, you can now hear the turbo pulling air in then the pressure being released when you lift off. It’s not ‘loud’ in the cabin but you can definitely hear it clearly.
The intake and exhaust have added the right amount of theatre to hard pulls without making it sound silly during normal driving. I’m pretty pleased as both were a bit of a punt.

I had it on my Mk7.5 and moved it to my 8 recently. I think I bought it from a Skoda parts supplier in Eastern Europe, that I learned of from this forum, because their delivery was quicker. I think if it’s a similar appearance they all originate from China. I think I saw them for sale on the EZmods site, the sticker supplier, recently. Theirs was illuminated for £60! I am not sure who would have the keenest price. I see one on eBay for £26.99, including delivery, which seems to be the cheapest from within the UK.

I bought these mud flaps for my GTI from AliExpress for £15. They were delivered in 10 days. They seem to be the correct version to fit the GTI body kit; the fitting holes are pre-moulded and they are complete with screws. Unsurprisingly, I don’t think they are of the same quality as OEM. I thought given the price I would take a chance. I am going to fit them and see how they go.

I bought a set of those from AliExpress when I first got my GTI, I never actually fitted them though, when I offered them up they clearly didn’t fit snug enough for my ‘OCD’, quality of items can vary wildly depending on seller bought from, so your purchase may be better quality than my £11 purchase, it would be great to see them fitted though Ceefeesh, please post some pics if you get the time.

Can I confirm, do these MK7 footrests fit the MK8?
-
Yes they do. I took mine from my 7.5 and fitted it to my Mk8 two days ago. The 7 and the 8 have the same mounting clips for the footrest and they are secured with one T20 screw you take from the original. If you search on the forum for Mk7s there was an article showing how to do this but it is straightforward.

Ended up just binning them

I have offered them up and they look ok but not perfect. I’ll not be able to tell until I try one properly but if they are not good enough they won’t be going on. I bought them out of curiosity. When I get one on, (once I refill my trolley jack) I’ll post a picture.

Ok mine is now on the way, I’m going to have to stay away from this forum

I had it on my Mk7.5 and moved it to my 8 recently. I think I bought it from a Skoda parts supplier in Eastern Europe, that I learned of from this forum, because their delivery was quicker.
Joe, did you have to disconnect battery or anything? I have mine sitting in the car since I got it afraid to do it in case I mess something up

No, no need to disconnect the battery but I would recommend removing the fuse for the horn as it’ll keep going off!
-
Definitely disconnect the horn. One accidental blast is enough to convince you. I had literally no idea what I was doing. Some great help from people on here as always. Once you’ve removed one clip it becomes much easier as you know what to do.
Tbh fitting the dynamic indicators was harder.
On and don’t touch the start button by accident unless you want the airbag warning light to stay on! Yes, I’m a total pleb.
Good luck!!!

Has anyone found someone who makes an infill piece to go in the bloody big hole under the rear bumper?
I don't care if its just black ABS, just worried that it will fill with crap and rust the car body

That’s quite a list. I have done most of those changes but not all. You’re particular and will have the car how you want it. Why not? Enjoy.
What are your wheels? They look very nice.
-
Probably too particular but it’s worth the hassle to have the car the way I want it
Still deliberating in fitting a set of Eibach springs but will wait and see how it sits with the wheels fitted
The wheels have just been released recently

Job done, getting the airbag off was the most difficult part, I was able to leave it plugged in. Good call on the fuse for the horn 😃

After washing it I’ve just booked it in for a valet and ceramic coat.
It’s the first time I’ve ever ever paid for anything like this on my cars so I’m hoping it’s worth it

It will depend on a few things. The prep done and the products used by your detailer and also how well you maintain it afterwards.
If you're planning to get it done and then take it to the local car wash every week, then you won't see what the fuss is about after a couple of months and I wouldn't bother spending the cash in the first place. Maintain it properly with good washing technique and the right products and you will one hundred percent see the difference in how clean your car is, and remains, compared to most cars on the road.
Except the top of the rear bumper. That gets manky real fast, no matter how well you try to keep it clean.

Does a ceramic coating make the car less susceptible to those annoying kamikaze bugs and insects welding themselves to the front bumper, leading edge of the bonnet, door mirror covers etc. at this time of year?

Not really. A coating is not some kind of dirt/debris repellant. What it can do or at least help with is make it easier to clean and possibly make insects/bird droppings less prone to leaving stains in the paint.

My experience is it makes them easier to get off for sure. Using some pre wash mixed with hot water certainly helps as well. I use valet pro citrus pre wash before snow foam.

Very nice! - IMHO far too nice to just have on the car during the winter months. I’d keep them on all year round.

Lovely wheels. Right up my street, if not my bank balance.
I'd keep the standard Richmonds for winter and put these on when the sun comes back as SRGTD says.
Can't wait to see them on your car.
-
I ordered the wheels from a shop on eBay UK which provided the wheels to my exact choice, including ET44. The wheels cost considerably less than UK prices. The supplier is based in Germany but sells to the UK. Delivery was included in the price and I had to pay a supplement for delivery to Northern Ireland. Delivery charges to GB should be less. The wheels were well packaged and arrived undamaged. From ordering to delivery was nine days.
-
you didn't get whacked for import duty and VAT?
-
Not so far. We in NI are still treated as part of the EU under the NI Protocol. It will be the first time I have seen a benefit from it, normally I can’t buy things from GB and have them sent to NI. Don’t start me! - least said, soonest mended.
-
I guess that will be the answer... I've had my eye on a German eBay seller who are offering 18" Prets for about £250 less than UK dealers, thought it might be worth while but then I remembered about the taxes now!

Here’s what I am thinking of when I decide to bite the bullet.

Oooh dynamic caps.👍
Will they fit? I'd always thought the Borbets had a smaller centre hole.
-
I believe they should be the same centre bore. I asked for them to match the original. Borbet make these 18Y wheels as a factory spec option for the Tiago. I bought them to avoid spigot rings. Here’s the box label.
I have tried standard 56mm centre caps and they do fit.

I have bought these vinyl sill covers to apply soon after I get some corrective paint work completed. I set them on the sills to get an idea of how they will look. They cover both levels of the sill and have the new GTI font. I had a similar set on my 7.5 and they were durable; after nearly four years they still looked good. (Apologies for the sycamore seed!).

They look like 21s at that angle 🤣
Aren’t all the indicators already dynamic?
-
The angle must be deceptive, they do look big in the photo, it wasn’t intentional. They are 18s and when I get them on in a few weeks I’ll post a new photo. The indicator lens in the mirrors just blink unlike the front and rear which are sometimes referred to as dynamic/sequential/progressive or incremental and light and extinguish a section at a time.

The mats look good Joe, a bit of a worry fitting new carpet mats at this time of year though, unless you put on some of these each time you get in https://www.screwfix.com/p/disposable-overshoes-blue-size-one-size-fits-all-100-pack/3734k
I’ve never been a huge fan of enormous model logos adorning car interiors but the subtle tabs on the mats match the steering wheel badge nicely. Adds a touch of class.

Whilst my Clubsport order is still vapourware and who knows when it'll arrive next year. I have actually bought some stuff for a car I don't yet have. Am I slightly mad, well maybe...but I will get to use these purchases whilst I wait for Wolfsburg to sort itself out.
As I run a separate set of winter wheels I have a VW tyre bag set to store whichever wheels and tyres that are not on the car. I've opted for 19" Black Estorils on the Mk8, which my current tyre bags won't accomodate. Saw that VW do sell some larger bags for wheels with tyres up to 21" (guess with SUVs and EVs having generally larger wheels). Dealer struggled to find them on the parts system, but eventually found them in the 'commercial vehicles' section. Part number is 000.073.900.E if anyone is looking for something similar.
My winter tyres were due for a change this year after about 3 to 4 winters worth of use. These I have on the second set of alloys, currently some BBS 17" SR Himalaya Satin Grey, 7.5J, ET45.
Knowing that these 17" winter wheels on my Mk6 GTI won't fit the Clubsport due to the required brake clearance. My man maths worked out that buying a new set of 17" tyres only for 1 winter's use was probably a bit of a waste. Even though 17" tyres are a little cheaper than 18" ones and ever the optimist that my Clubsport will actually arrive before winter 2023.
So that's what I've done, after waiting nearly four weeks for them to arrive from Germany (mostly due to them being stuck at UK customs) today they've turned up. This clearly could've been an opportunity for something different, radical wheel experimentation . But whilst it did whizz around my head as a possible option , I've decided to just size up and go for the 18" version of the BBS SR wheels I like and think will suit the Mk8. They're easy to clean, colour hides the brake dust, they're not diamond cut (not a fan anymore), and they have an OEM look (in my opinion). Width is 8J and an ET45 offset.
Continental WinterContact TS 870 P tyres are being fitted tomorrow. When the UK autumn weather finally decides what it's doing (referring to the 17°C temps expected this weekend) and more typical weather of the season arrives, they'll be swapped over on the trusty Mk6. First bit of my Mk8 build I'll get to use. As for the 17" versions, they'll be getting cleaned up and ready to sell to offset the cost of my new ones.
(https://i.postimg.cc/hjTb3Csb/SR-Himalaya-Satin-Grey-18.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/cg1nvBVr)
-
They look good. Quite similar in colour and style to the Borbets I recently purchased. I think they’ll suit any Golf from a Mk V on and will look well om a Mk 8. I think you are right about hiding dirt and brake dust.
-
Always had a big soft spot for BBS SR’s.
-

@Bluto; BBS SR’s in Himalaya Grey are a great choice IMHO. I agree 100% with your points above and would add that the matt grey painted finish should be highly durable - no white worm corrosion either .
I dislike diamond cut alloys with a passion  - poor durability of finish, susceptible to white worm corrosion, easily damaged by tyre fitters, more expensive to refurbish than painted / powder coated alloys and can’t be refurbished more than twice. Given the choice of painted / powder coated or diamond cut, I’d go for the former every time.
-
I bought new Christmas tree baubles for my tree. Oops sorry! They are Borbet centre caps. I had thought of VW dynamic GTI centre caps for my Borbet wheels but I have tried genuine VW centre caps for 18 and 19” wheels and they don’t fit. The Borbet spokes stop them snapping into place. Instead, I bought these great quality original Borbet centres with some red in them to pick up on the GTI red accent. They’re not dynamic but I saved £92 over the VW option.

I also couldn’t find VW centre caps for my aftermarket alloys, although I wasn’t that bothered - they’re not VW alloys and I’m not pretending that they are so the centre caps that came with the alloys do the job just fine.
I personally would never buy VW dynamic centre caps as they seem very expensive to me for what they are, but maybe I’m just a tightwad .
I think your Borbet centre caps look fine. If you ever did want to convert them to VW, you could always consider getting some domed VW emblem overlay stickers, although I’m not sure if anyone is making these in the latest font style VW is using for their logo (there are plenty available in the previous style logo in various sizes).
-
I have a selection of Mk 7.5 font stickers of VW and GTI logos that I could use. There are some new style VW stickers too. I have yet to see any Mk8 GTI font which is why the dynamic VW GTI centres were appealing but I don't think they would fit. They are also £120 which is not far off the cost of one wheel. Mad!
-
Not exactly bought for my car but laser etched coasters with images of golfs, a Mk 1, 7.5 and 8, I own or have owned which I have been given as a present.

About to fit these - where is the fuse for the horn?

About to fit these - where is the fuse for the horn?
Lift the bonnet and there’s a fuse box to the right side. It’s one of those, I’m fairly sure the manual says which one it is.

How did you get on? Did mine Sunday (didn’t take the horn fuse out). Pictures on here helped a lot. Couldn’t have don’t it without little densits type mirror.
Only issue I had is when I removed the cowling on top I pushed too hard and pulled the fabric out of its fastening behind the dash - should have pushed it up with the wheel pushed in, then pulled out.
All seem to work though!

Our 10 month old was teething like crazy yesterday so I didnt get to it. Going to have a go tomorrow.

Advice time please; my November 2020 Mk8 GTI is due to have all 4 tyres replaced soon. Currently on approx. 4mm all round. It came fitted with Goodyear F1 SuperSports 18". No problem with these as such. I am also looking to replace the standard fit Richmond Alloys {enough said} with either one of these:
BBS Black XR or the Borbet LX18 Black with the Red wheel trim.
Regarding tyre choice, it will be between the Goodyear or the Michelin Pilot Sport 5. I did look at the new Continental Sport Contact but they are pricey and owners of the previous edition speak about initial tread depth being only 6mm from new?
Anyway, as this is such a helpful forum all round, any advice gratefully accepted!
-
I fitted a different style of Borbets and I am very happy with them. Have a look at the tunershop-Germany on eBay. They were the best value I could find. The wheels were boxed in original Borbet packaging and arrived in perfect condition in about a week. I had no VAT to pay but I am in Northern Ireland and this may have been an anomaly of the regulations in place last year. I made a significant saving buying them this way. If you settle on Borbets it would be wise to compare their prices.
-
Interesting choices of wheel Tony Jazz, both quite different in design.
I’ve seen black BBS XR posted up in this section on a mk8 before and they look really good.
The Borbet design is very modern with the highlighted sections. One question you’d have to ask would be whether many refurbishment companies could cope with producing a decent restoration job if you kerbed one. I also think visually they might look quite small on a Golf 8 in 18” diameter but haven’t seen any on a car to make an informed judgement.
As for tyres, both those options are about as good as it gets for a road car.
Possibly the Michelins might be a tiny bit more comfortable due to slightly less stiff sidewalls but I’m sure they’d basically score points off each other in all criteria when tested to extremes. In normal use they’d both be excellent.
Best options might be to just say “which ones can I get the best deal on or do I just fancy a slight change from my current set without risking an inferior performing tyre?”

Ceefesh/Exoninan;
Thanks very much for the suggestions and opinions. I will check out the tunershop ; not sure about any VAT/HMC regulations as opposed to conditions in N.I.
I think that the Tyre Reviews website did mention that he had a new UUHP tyre review due this month, so might wait for that to finally decide.
Agree that 19" do look better as they fill the wheelarch, but given the state of the UK road network, I'll stay on the 18"'s for now!
Will post some pics when all fitted.

FYI my Borbet Y 18s were circa £650, delivered.

Which is stonking good value for a good looking wheel from an OEM manufacturer.

Here’s the link to the Borbet 18Y in black. Not too dissimilar to the BBS XR. Food for thought?

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. Decision time looming...
Also will fit winter Goodyear/Michelin tyres to the Richmond's as have always wanted a summer/winter set.
Thanks again.

I have a set of Michelin Cross Climate all season tyres on mine. I am very pleased with them.

Are these 18" or 19"?

They are 18s. Good grip, for the weather we’ve been having. Not noisy.

Could someone with an 8R and a space saver wheel check out the size/offset for me? I'm presuming it'll be a T125/70 R18 Tyre on a 31/2J x 18H2, maybe with ET25.5?
Maybe part number too, something like 5Q0 601 027 BC ?
These details are stamped between the bolt holes on the wheel.
Looking to get a spare for the incoming S3. Factory fit, it's a £125 option, but from the dealership it's almost £200 just for the bare wheel, plus about £140 for the tyre - so I'm looking to ebay, but can't confirm the exact size needed to clear the calipers that I'm assuming are the same dimensions for R and S3.
-
I don't think there is one. People have fitted MK7 ones but the problem is, it won't clear the front brakes.
You could get around this by swapping a rear wheel to the front and putting the spacesaver on the back if you're unfortunate enough to pick up a puncture on the front. You'd want to be very fond of hassle to go to all that trouble though.
-
I got a spare wheel (somehow) with my GTI, I take it that won’t fit on an R front either.

The front brakes on the Clubsport and R are a good bit bigger than the standard GTI.

Makes sense that there isn't one - just been through the configurator - you can select one for standard 245ps GTI, but not fir Clubsport or R. The Audi configurations lets you pick one for S3 though, wonder whether it's different to the GTI spacesaver, as I can't imagine the discs/calipers being smaller on the S3 than the Clubby or the R.
One other thing I did notice though - 2 year Golf service plan (including R) is £269. Same 2 year service plan with Audi A3, including S3 is £539..

Mk7.5 GTI performance space saver fits mk8 gti perfect and in boot all the tool kit etc all fit as in 7.5 not sure if that's any help to you
-
For a GTI space saver the part number is 5G0601011. The wheel is 3.5J x 18" ET25. The tyre is 125/70 R18 99M. I’m not aware if there is any difference between the space space saver for a GTI and GTI PP. I know it fits my Mk 8 as do the tools from the 7.5. I bought the wheel with tyre, tools and wheel retainer separately on eBay, for £169.
-
I can't imagine the discs/calipers being smaller on the S3 than the Clubby or the R.
I have a pretty shocking memory. I can’t remember nine tenths of my family’s birthdays, I have no idea where I put the cheese grater last time I used it and generally I can never remember what I had for tea the day before never mind any other day in the week…
BUT I do randomly remember weird little details about cars. For instance I can remember just about every interior trim change in the MK2 Golf GTI’s lifetime (there were quite a few believe it or not) and other odds and sods like that.
This leads me to - I’m sure I saw that the current Audi S3 has smaller brakes than the Clubby and mk8R more akin to the previous generation S3 and 7R/7GTI PP.
I might be wrong but then again I might not be.
Oh and as for the service plans, the Audi techies use more expensive nitrile gloves, that’s where your money goes.
(Maybe Audi include more things as my £269 covered two oil changes and bugger all else. VW also dropped on me at the 2nd service that the aircon and brake fluid were also due to be changed and then a few weeks later told me the Haldex aldo needed doing at 2 years which may or may not account for the difference if Audi include stuff like that, and use a nicer air freshener when they Hoover and wash your car)

Not sure about the backs, but seemingly the 8R and 8Y S3 (probably the Clubby too, but couldn't confirm) have the same OEM 357mm x 34mm drilled and vented front discs.
If that's correct, those 14" discs need a caliper protrusion of probably no more than 35mm to fit that within the internal diameter of that 18" space saver. Seems an incredibly tight fit for the standard 18" rims of the R, Clubby or S3, but if 18" alloys should fit, an 18" spacesaver with the right offset should also fit.
As for the servicing costs, seems perhaps marginally cheaper than turn up on the day prices for the minor and major services,no big savings buying the pack, unlike the VW service pack offerings you'd be mad not to take up.
Scope of works seems the same - definitely excludes aircon (who needs a re-gas after 2 years anyway?), doesn't explicitly exclude brake fluid, doesn't mention to include it either, so probably doesn't include it. Would definitely avoid main dealer rates for stuff like haldex/DSG fluid changes unless they came in near VAG specialist rates.
-
Nope, I’m pretty sure the new S3 is still running 340mm fronts.
I decided I’d have a look to satisfy my curiosity and here’s a pic of an S3 front wheel and brake combo. On a mk8 Clubby you’d barely get a wheel weight between the rim and calliper when using 18” wheels.

I've been going off mainly brake upgrade websites that state 8R/8Y S3 OEM discs are the same, so that source is quite possibly wrong. Can't find any confirmation of disc size officially from Audi websites or an Audi forum, so just been looking to compare with similar pics you supplied for "Jarez" 18" R wheels:-
(https://i.postimg.cc/PqGL6S7X/XF-4-3-Wheels-C.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
There's not a lot in it either way, seemingly from the pic above, but it does look like the disc and caliper framing are marginally bigger on the Golf, with no drilling on the S3's discs. Makes sense as the R is more "track focussed" with the drift mode etc that the S3 doesn't have. If they are 340s, same as previous gen, then the spare I've been looking at should fit, as I've been told it fits previous gen. I think I'd better hang on until I have the car to be sure.
Your 2 pics do clarify though that red calipers for £290 are a rip off, that they're no bigger than the black ones and the black ones look good enough, especially on a black car.
-
I reckon the spare should fit fine but as you say, best wait until the car is with you remove all doubt.
When I got my Clubsport home it came originally on 18’s and I remember thinking I’d need a seagull feather or something to clean between the wheel barrel and calliper it’s that tight!
Unless doing autobahn speeds the difference in braking between drilled 357’s and solid (vented) 340’s should be the sum total of hardly anything. The alu bells on the mk8 brakes are a pain to scrub too.
Oh, and the black callipers won’t show brake dust as badly as red too. The black callipers on my old R were much more forgiving on wash day than the red GTI brakes.
-
I miss the clubsport brakes after switching to my Formentor VZ2310. Definitely noticable

Mines coming on red calipers because its a stock car and the dealership ticked that box. Really not sure why though - £290 for a luck of red paint instead of black is pure robbery, it's half the cost of the metallic paint cost for the car! Lots of odd discrepancies in price between the VAG marques - A3 metallic paint price is less than that on the Golf. I think A1's metallic paint is significantly cheaper than the Polo's too, but tge previously mentioned service pack is twice the price. There's just no consistency or logic to it all.
-
And I bet you’d never get an explanation as to why they vary costs between their marques even if you got to ask someone further up the food chain.
I miss the clubsport brakes after switching to my Formentor VZ2310. Definitely noticable
Is the Formentor on 340’s?
Are they really that noticeably different or maybe just need bedding in?

Only done 600 miles, so may still need some bedding in, but they don’t seem as powerful

They look like the same sort of sized brakes as on the Clubsport so maybe it’s the low mileage and the extra weight they have to haul down?
In fact they could be even bigger and are Brembo badged

Those bottom ones look tiny, but it depends how big the wheels are. Unlucky on the Bridgestone tyres there, for whoever wheels those are.
In other news, my S3 is in the country, so waiting for it to get to the dealership (a mere 2 miles from Grimsby Docks).

Both wheels are 19”
Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long now before your car is in your hands 🤞🏻

Top image is the VZ3, which comes with brembos and the ‘unique’ copper alloys, which I wasn’t a fan of. I was removing the stock wheels to put the wheels from the clubsport straight on anyway, so the 3 grand extra wasn’t worth it. Stock wheels are 19”, and 340mm discs

Had a slow puncture ping up last weekend so took the car to the tyre shop yesterday. They found a split on the NS rear inner sidewall and an egg on the NSF inner edge. Typically I’d replaced the fronts in November but they only had about 2500 miles left on them..The rears were originals ( 23000 miles )
So 4x PS4S were ordered.
Went over this morning to get them fitted. They remove the tyre with the egg and the alloy is cracked on the inner rim so I leave the car there whilst it’s taken off to be repaired..
It’s been an expensive week so far…
Eggs are usually so much cheaper a few days after Easter too. Do you remember hitting a pothole at any point or does the wheel seem pretty fragile?

I have a reg no allocated to the car now and the salesman reckons the car should be at the dealership before the weekend. I guess I'll be picking it up next weekend as I'm in Barcelona with work Mon to Weds next week.
I got a revised invoice for adding on the factory warranty extension to 5 years (Audi still do that, even though VW stopped) and the "barely saves anything" £539 service pack. I think they must've cocked up my discount somewhere because rather than getting £1400 + £3k deposit contribution, the revised invoice including the warranty/service pack is now coming in at £1770 discount + £3k deposit contribution. I think they've done something pre-VAT addition for that extra £370 saving, but I can't see exactly what they've done because it doesn't exactly correspond to any 1 or more component pre-VAT, but the car itself looks to be cheaper than it should be . Hopefully they won't notice! The car invoice total should be £1169 more than it was, with the warranty/service pack now added, but it's only £779 more.

I’ve not hit a large one, no. I assume it’s a combination of hits due to our poor roads

Easier/cheaper to weld rather than replace?

With the state of UK roads (a small part of the tens of billions that need to be spent on UK infrastructure, but don't get me started!) I'm glad I stuck with 18's even though I prefer the look of 19's.
The roads aren't getting better any time soon, so it'll be slightly higher tyre profiles for me I think.

I don't know how it's so hard for the councils to execute a pothole repair that work rather than one which will have lifted at the next freeze/thaw weather cycle. Motorway pothole fixes are done properly and the patch edges sealed, they last. It's like that adage "buy cheap and buy twice" - just do it properly first time!

It actually will be, looking to get what should be a 2 day GMP audit done in a single day, with a bit of travel done on the days either side. Would love to have a bit of leisure time in Barcelona, but it probably isn't going to happen.

When I picked mine up (3rd March) it was about the same less (I think) than original paperwork (from apr-21) due to update/change in the on the road tax banding. The way the deposit contribution was handled was always a bit confusing as well.
-
I'm definitely paying £370 less than expected, not entirely sure how they worked it out. I'm presuming that somewhere they gave my discount before VAT, so the saving is bigger than I expected. It might be the £2400 discount (£1400 margin dealership plus £1000 of the £3000 deposit contribution is supposedly from the dealer.). Add VAT to the £2400.and you're up at £2880, not far away from the total discount when you add VWFS's £2k on.
Just had an email to sat that my car has arrived at the dealership, but sales guy is off until Monday, so unless someone else is prepared to hand over, it'll be next week now.

Picking up tomorrow, confirmed - train to Grimsby booked.
-
Had a real "Trains, Panes and Automobiles" journey to get the car at Grimsby and bring it back to Newcastle.
Had 2 trains booked - Newcastle to Doncaster, then Doncaster to Grimsby, if only it went that smoothly...
All Edinburgh to London trans cancelled, someone mown down and killed on the tracks south of Darlington, so got the Metro to Sunderland, train from Sunderland to Thornaby, train from Thornaby to York, train from York to Doncaster, which was dangerously full (the first train from Edinburgh since the Darlington accident), and finally got a train from Doncaster to Grimsby.
It was worth it when I got there:-

I could've headed out west to get straight onto the A1, but I thought i'd drive over the Humber bridge, as i've never done it before, then skirt around York up the A19.
The car was great - as nice and smooth as BEVs are, they're a bit dull/soul-less - zero drama.
The Bridgestone curse has struck again: S005 Potenza this time - they seem as hard and noisy as any of the previous incarnations - might bin them immediately for some Michelins or Goodyears from Costco.
Early days as everything is as everything is tight as a drum, but mpg was a little dissappointing - 160 miles of mixed driving - half semi-windy A-roads, half dual carriageway sat at 75mph and I got 34.2mpg. Was looking for the high 30s, given that 7th cog my 2015 manual R never had.
The elasticated nets in the boot and on the back of the front seats (with a hard plastic back to those seats) are a nice standard touch to stop anything loose from rattling around. The stubby little DSG selector is new - need to get used to that. Otherwise, very nice seats. Did the OBD11 fixes for stuff like Lane Assist memory (set it to off and it stays off beyond the ignition cycle).
Just got on to VWFS to withdraw from the finance and retain the £3k deposit contribution - 10.1% APR is just nuts, on those terms you pay more interest than capital over a 3 or 4 year PCP term.

Sounds like the luck I have on trips. Glad the ending was worth it. Shame its chucking it down up here today. I expect the mpg will improve with miles. They could have cleaned the leaves out of the handover bay

Congrats on getting the S3 sorted mate. I hope you'll enjoy it and I'm sure you won't be disappointed with the performance. I'd get one too if I could afford it but my CS lease still has a year to run. Although the bongs are an annoying distraction nobody can get the same cost/benefit now that we could all get two years ago.
I'm also not a fan of the huge grille on the S3 but I'd get used to it - I wasn't over keen on the front of CS either but it has grown on me.
-
The S3 looks very nice MH
Glad you picked it up ok, not too long a wait even if a faff to collect on the day.
MPG sounds about right. I did 150+ miles yesterday and averaged circa 34mpg. Some crappy lanes, mostly fast A roads, light traffic, dry and not too cold.
A few days ago I managed nearly 40mpg on a fairly steady 70mph run plus some slower A roads.
It seems to vary day to day like that, sometimes no rhyme nor reason why it does better or worse mpg.

I slightly prefer the S3 grille to the Golf 8 droopy front end - that still hasn't grown on me, the MK7 looked so much better. Having no wait by grabbing a stock car just built and waiting a month for it to arrive, as well as the £3k deposit contribution (pocketed and withdrawn from my agreement the day after collection) made it an easy decision to go S3 rather than R.
No bongs yet - are these notifications of temporary unavailability of certain safety systems e.g. front assist sensor impaired etc? The Born gets them occasionally.

Car looks good. An S3 is still appealing. Can’t comment on the prospect of bongs. I’m still bong free🤞

I really thought I'd be pushing 40mpg, but my main motivation for chopping in the Cupra Born for this was so my monthly(ish) commute to MK doesn't involve having to stop every 1.5 to 2 hours for a 40 minute wait to recharge, at a cost of 25p a mile. Winter motorway range on EVs is truly sh!te. Look forward to the car ticking over 620 miles (1000 km) when it unlocks most, if not all the output.
I'm surprised that VAG hasn't implemented the Budack cycle running for the EA888 4 the Polo.GTI+ has on its EA888 3b variant. At constant low output (mainly motorway cruising), the mpg was ridiculously good - 53mpg at a constant 70mph, and 47mpg at a constant 80mph.
The mpg did take a huge tumble on a forced GPF regen with that Polo though.
A few interior pics.

Not original but I fitted a RacingLine bonnet strut to my Mk 8. A two minute job.

Pity the AliExpress black mirror caps wouldn’t fit as well. I have now broken several clips on the driver’s side trying to get them on. Cheap crap but to my knowledge there are no oem VW black caps with side assist available. Note the lovely engine cover! Not.
Good job I looked at this photo. I had left my ratchet and socket inside!

Very nice
My car is awaiting collected at port. I will wait until 1st May now.

I reckon on a steady run down to MK you’ll manage 40mpg reasonably easily unless you’re really tanking on.
My lad’s 2021 A3 doesn’t suffer bongs like my Golf does. He gets occasional reboots of the media unit on the fly for no apparent reason but that’s about all.

Not long to wait, at nearly £600 a year for road tax I can see why!

Only 1 possible gremlin so far. My radio favourites have been forgotten. I did set them up before I finished setting up the "My Audi" app, so maybe they're still there as a guest, but not for my newly created profile?
Still waiting for my 3M sticky pads to refit my Thinkware dashcams. I also need to fit the puddle lights as they were in a box in the glovebox, along with a big chunky 300odd page printed user manual- haven't seen one of those with a VAG car for a while.

I recently fitted gloss black mirror caps from AliExpress, the ones I received are very good quality to be fair, and with the right pick tool I was able to fit them in 5-10 minutes without removing the glass either👌 the most difficult part was swapping over the side assist light.
-
Taking the glass off is easy, takes about 30 seconds to remove or refit. I have fitted the passenger side which was relatively easy. I have since broken the inside clip on the mirror cap on the driver's side (twice). The last time it had locked on so tight that when I was trying to get the outside clip to lock, the inside clip broke off. I also used a pick to pull the mirror cap on to the wing mirror housing. I have now got a different colour of mirror cap on either side that I have decided to leave alone. I am not sure which I prefer. Different!

I bought Mk 8 R DSG paddles from the Czech Republic using a link provided by Carl_45. Arrived in 8 days. It will probably be 10 days before I get them on. I think sometimes they’ll be easier to use than the standard paddles. I swapped the paddles between steering wheels on my 7.5 a couple of times so I’ll give it a go.

Still need to do mine. Let me know how you get on

Tractordave: did you get your dashcam fully done in the end? I only just got my rear camera sorted after pulling a load of Erwin assembly instructions on an hour's subscription - PM if you need anything - the trim in and around the boot was a total bugger to access the tailgate wiring rubber gaiters and feed the rear cam lead through. Worst/fiddliest rear cam fitment I have done.

Yes, all done no problem. I didn't fit a rear view camera. Just the front facing one. The fuse box was almost identical on the Rs and I just copied the cable route and piggy back fuse as used on the Golf. I did have to buy a new sticky pad set as the aftermarket one I tried lasted three days. Genuine nexbase one from Amazon seems good.
Interesting the the garage sold my R for top money within a week!

These arrived today and tomorrow I’ll try them to ensure they fit. The centre caps came from Germany and took six days to arrive. I also have my R paddles fitted except I have to refit the airbag, which is also tomorrow. I’ll post when I have it finished.
