Glove Box Light - 501 (W5W) LED

Nice, thank you!!!

Excellent instructions Stuart. Have you got any pics or does anyone know if the rear number plate lights are LEDs or standard yellow bulbs? Can't seem to find any pics??

Rear number plate lights are LED as standard!
-
Cheers pal.
-
Great guide Stu, cheers mate.
-
Which bulbs have people used in the glove box? How many leds?
-
501 (W5W). I have got the 12 SMDs rather than the LEDs as they are brighter IMO.

As a member on a few of different forums, LED's and bulbs always seem to cause massive confusion
The info everyone had posted already is excellent so for anyone who's unsure, the GTI/GTD come standard with LED DRL's, footwell lights, fogs, puddle lights, interior, rear and number plate bulbs.
The bulbs that you may wish to change (and links to suggested upgrades) are:
Static cornering lights - H7 - http://ebay.eu/1k8ITWy
Reversing lights - H21W - http://ebay.eu/1jFFsUd
Front indicators H21W - same bulb as reversing lights but need to be very bright for safety/visibility. Above bulb will work but some owners report that they are not as bright as original. I found these on a French site and might give them a go but they are extortionate - http://bit.ly/1gTmPvb
Vanity mirror lights - Festoon 38mm LED - http://ebay.eu/RO8Xx4
Glovebox - 501 also known as W5W LED - http://ebay.eu/1lId8aO
Boot - Festoon 42mm LED - http://ebay.eu/1ro6DXT
Thanks to Croz13, Monsta & Aidey for some of the above info.

Anyone else had any problems with this mod or have VW recently changed the bulb sizes?
My GTD is a build week 15 and I've just got a replacement 38mm festoon vanity bulb, only it's larger than the bulb I've just removed from the car by about 4mm, and yes, it is a 38mm I have because I've measured it...

Thanks Ross just ordered some of these apart from the vanity mirror one that p9ul has highlighted.
Cheers great info.

Hi Paul
Can you take a photo of the two festoon lamps side by side against a ruler? There are 31mm and 36mm festoon lamp sizes too so it may be one of those sizes potentially...
Cheers
Jake

Right - a little update...
I believe the 39mm bulb I have already was supposed to be a 42mm bulb intended for the boot, and not only is it the wrong size but I don't think it works either as it will fit in between the contacts (but is very loose) but sdoes not illuminate.
I'm still waiting for my twin pack of 39mm bulbs to arrive from ebay, a bit gutting when I know they're gonna be too big even when they do arrive...
I've got a pic on my iphone but the image is rubbish - I'll post a better one later (the wife's gone to work in the other car and my SLR is in the glovebox )
-
Remember LEDs only work one way round!
-
Ah okay, keep up posted Paul - I've ordered some LED festoons in anticipation for my GTI and am hoping they are the right size...
With the grip on the lamp in the boot, are the contacts adjustable at all just by a mm or two to get the grip to be a bit more snug? And there's the polarity too to think about as Stuart pointed out!
-
Ok, tried again and the bulb does work as I did have it the wrong way round
The fitting in the boot does adjust slightly to accommodate the 39mm bulb but I wouldn't say I'm happy with the fit, it's not a tight enough fit to stop the bulb spinning in the holder, a 42mm should solve that though.
I heard a dashboard warning when fitting the bulb and I'm hoping the slightly loose fitting bulb doesn't trigger that on bumpy roads...
-
I was under the impression that non of the internal lights gave a canbus error!
I take it thats not correct then, they do throw out errors?
-
I would be very surprised if interior lights were canbus monitored but I've been wrong before... i.e the festoon bulb sizes - apologies for that one guys, do we know if 38mm is the correct size yet?
-
I only got warning bleeps when inserting the new bulb , once it was positioned correctly there were no issues and hasn't given any errors since.
Seriously considering swapping out the reversing bulbs now - hoping it makes the reversing camera a little more usable at night as I have to be right on top of my fence posts to see them and the sensors bleep even when I'm miles off them... :undecided:
please excuse crappy pic - macro photography is not my strong point...

Top - My replacement 42mm bulb which arrived today with the OEM festoon below
Bottom - 39mm LED to fit the vanity mirror with the actual OEM festoon bulb taken from my BW15 GTD - est. 35-36mm...
edit - while the 39mm will work fine in the boot, the 42mm is a great fit and doesn't spin round in the holder - a lot more confident I'm not going to get any warnings now
edit 2 - 39mm bulbs have arrived and they fit the vanity lights spot on - only thing is they measure around 36mm so I'm proper confused now...

Has anyone been able to work out if the interior roof lights can be upgraded, I have had a quick look at them and they appear to be a special bulb and lens unit, not wishing to damage anything did not try and dismantle the units.
Just that after upgrading the rest of the bulbs the standard roof lights seem a little weak.
-
I ordered some 36mm 6xSMD bulbs for the vanity mirrors. They fit my BW18 GTD perfectly but they are too bright for me. Will try some 2x or 3x SMDs.

No personal experience of this, but spotted this led supplier (http://www.ledperf.co.uk/pack-interior-full-led-pure-white-for-volkswagen-golf-7-p-4434.html) on another forum. Not cheap, but they seem to be able to supply installation information, as well as the led's.

They do not appear to offer lamps for the roof lights only the Boot, Glove Box and Vanity Lights which I have already done.
Just that now everything else has been changed the Roof Lights seem a little dim in comparison.

You could just turn the bulb around a bit so the LED's are then facing upwards slightly!?
-
Put some 3 SMD bulbs in and they are perfect :)
-
Just to add to this, in my BW23 GTI the sun visor mirror lights come as stock with LED, it's only the boot and glove box that aren't LED as standard now!

Lol wish I'd read this all the way through. Bought the vanity lights, sent to fit them this morning and they're already LEDs. Anyone want a couple of LED festoon type vanity lights?

How much you after for them mate?
-
Fiver would do, cost about 8/9 quid with postage. Could return them but its a hassle.
-
The glovebox light is the same as the footwell lights so an easy way to upgrade is just order one as a spare from a dealer.
-
Hate to be the odd one out but I've got a polo 7r gti. Wondering if the LEDs that your are recommending will be compatible with my polo? Cheers.
-
Fitted the LED Festoon in the boot and LED W5W in the glovebox last night, i've noticed a little issue with both though, the glovebox now has a kind of polka dot light?! I assume It's because of the plastic casing refracting the light somehow? Anyone else noticed this?

Also for some reason i decided to put my phone in the boot once i'd fitted the LED to see if it turned off ok when the boot was shut? And it doesn't go completely out, i know LED's take a while to go completely out but i left my phone recording for 10 minutes and it didn't dim at all, should i be worried about a dead battery?

This not unusual - the power use is minimal and wont affect the battery in normal use (or lack of)!
-
That's because the LEDs glim even at a very low current.
Fit a 5k5 resistor in parallel and you should be OK.
I've done the same on my boot light!
