About an '89 8v... Might just about get you a '90 G big bumper model. I don't think I would bother with a 16v at that kind of money.

Get a history check before parting with your cash tho'. So many write-offs out there  :(

Good luck!!

I agree with jv for what you could get for your money, I would personally go for a big body model, just because I prefer the look, also check out if the car you are looking at has been modified in any way as shoddy mods bunged on won't do you any favours.

As for mileage im sure I dont have to mention anything as im sure everyone can vouch that as long as it has the FSH you are sorted.

My Mk2 1.6 Driver set me back ?900 a couple of years ago with FSH even tho it had 144k on the clock it was a cherished and loved motor :)

Happy hunting

Cheers

the only thing im going to say is that there are plenty of golfs to go and have a look at so dont buy the first that you see. dont let that grand burn a large hole in your levis take your time and you should find a beauty.

i bought my mk2  3 door for ?700 with 16" alloys, scorpion exhaust etc. it has 130K doesn't smoke and has proven reliable for the last 4 months that i have owned it. mind you someone wrote it off 2 days after i bought it but its back on the road and working better than ever. It is surprisingly straight and clean tho it does leak a bit of rain in.  For that sort of money i would expect to get a pretty clean car(by my standards anyway)

Ideally, you want a Golf that hasn't been thrashed, pranged or thumped. They are pretty rare.

However, we found a great question to ask the prospective seller, "how fast have you got it to go?"

We found a beautiful 88E 16v many years ago. We could live with the blown fuses, but there were signs that the car was not as it should of been. The owner would not admit to anything.

So we asked him that question, and he replied that he went up and down the M1 every weekend at around 130.

We didn't walk away, we ran ;-)

As for price - no idea. Just avoid falling in love with a dog, it'll only bite.

Regards,
Justin
