Title: MPG
Post by: jonesltd on 24 December 2009, 18:37
Ok I have recently changed my MAF within the last 2 months and for some reason I am yet again going thru fuel? have done 143 miles and already from full gone thru 1 1/2 needles? I am hoping it is to do with the weather as it has been -6 at times and higest 0.5c???

Done 143 miles with the needle only moving 1 and a half notches? I may be missing something but that seems really good Mpg, too good in fact...

it would be a little down with all this cold weather, it knocked about 5 mpg of mine
could also be the water temp sender or the thermostat is your temp needle working fine?

Post by: jonesltd on 25 December 2009, 09:15
will check later for any faults but thinking about it, probably the weather however, steve_pd I normally got around high 50's low 60 mpg's and now in mid 40's?! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

no faults reported so guessing the weather...whats confusing me is others are saying their MPG is going up at this time of yr/weather/temp?

Mine aint brilliant but hasn't been since summer, gonna change the maf next week.

Nothing came up on vagcom for me either.

MPG drop on these cars can be very confusing to get to the bottom of, could be a number of things.

Just done a 20mile journey some motorway (m6) and have only managed to get out 45mpg which was the same as what I got before I changed my MAF which was ONLY done at end of nov....Does it need changing again?

nope not as yet but plannin on that in the new yr. So if it has gone again as I have only done 160miles now and has managed to use 2 needles which aint normal and yes have driven carefully etc... As I got the MAF from GSF does anyone know if there is a yrs warranty on it or anything as I have the receipt and will take it back for a new 1??
Title: Re: MPG

I think its down to the weather if it's just a couple of mpg as you use more fuel when it's cold, the air is dense and dense air means more fuel but also more power!

i actualy came to the conclusion today that i hate my f ing golf because of the fuel consumption. Its alright on a long journey 40mpg,but then around town its like 25mpg, make me wanna be sick. My Clio cup was so much quicker and so much more fuel efficient, im seriously thinking of going back to one in the new year.

Mate you need to look into what is wrong with the car, Vagcom it and see if anything comes up.

If nothing comes up you can go down the route i'm going as nothing showed up for me either.
I'm getting the MAF changed tomorrow and see what difference that makes, then i'm gonna get my EGR and manifold cleaned out.

Fingers tightly crossed one of these will sort the problem as my MPG is not right and hasn't been when it's hot like 27 degrees or minus 6 as it has been recently, so definately not the weather that's causing me the problems as they are 2 extreme ends of temp yet the MPG has been sh*te throughout :(

Wow thanks fook for that, I got my MAF changed today and my mpg is now sorted.
I got 56mpg on a 65 mile motorway trip at ease with putting my foot down aswell.
Previous to this, even if I drove like a fag doing 60-70 trying to be eco I would get 50 at a real push.

Do remember guys that I had the car vagcom'd and nothing came up on there which led me to believe that it was the maf that was causing sh!te MPG and it turned out it was that.

that's why you shouldn't just look for fault codes - you need to do real time data logging

Think the MAF is Block 02 / 03 under the engine module - do a few 3rd / 4th full throttle runs from 1800rpm to the red line

Your MAF values should meet or exceed the requested values asked for by the ECU

Sorry Rhyso what's that about? I don't get ya.

Is this something to get my maf working in order or something?

No

It's what you should have done to confirm that your MAF is knackered.  If the ACTUAL readings DO NOT match the specified figures i.e they fall BELOW the requested figures then your MAF is knackered

You need to be looking at from 2000rpm onwards.  Below this the MAF will read lowish until everything is fully wound up

A lot of people will blame the MAF, change it and yet still have the same problems.  Only by logging the values can you be 100% sure that it needs changing

You think its that bad then try running a wrx sti or an r34 skyline  :smiley:there bad !! but its well worth it cos the looks and enjoyment you get is great !!! im starting to hate my golf as its the 2nd german car ive had and all they do is bring up codes , im sure thats why scanners were invented just for vw , skoda and seats !!!

im going back to jap soon as you cant beat em never had any probs with my civic type r , skylines , wrx etc . even at our garage all the jap stuff is great and all we seem to fix are vw , seat , bmw and skodas !!!

You're not far from the truth there, and it dates back to 1969! (the old Type 3 with fuel inj.)

German cars are designed to let you know of a fault and implement safeguards before something blows up. Jap cars are designed to blow up then let you figure out after what went wrong

Right lads, firstly apologies as my mgp hasn't really improved, I thought it did but after going cheshire on Sat and only getting 45ish mpg it's still the same and that was with using Millers aswell.

So as i've got the car scanned with no probs showing, changed the maf no difference to mpg but smoother acceleration now, and also using diesel cleaning treatment, i'm not gonna bother now and just live with it as trying to sort it out and find the prob is doing my Parus caeruleus in now :(

Maybe a map in future, so hopefully that may improve things but that is probably later this year perhaps.

I don't feel wounded that I changed my MAF though as it's made the drive better as it doesn;t have as many flat spots and accelerates better now. So as Rhyso has previously stated do that test first bfore you change your maf unless you wanna change it anyway like a serviceable part.
