Ordered a code reader (U281 is the right one, right?) and booked it in to have the timing checked out as it's not revving past 5k.

U281 readers are handy little things to keep in the boot, albeit very basic. I've had one for about 8yrs and has helped me out loads when i need to quickly diagnose a problem whilst on the road.

I figured for the tenner or so they cost, it's better to have one than not  :)
Went for a long drive today, looking for additional issues - are all Mk3s are a bit soft as standard?

If you mean suspension then yes, the stock set up is sh!t straight out of the factory let alone once worn in.
