OK so its about time i upgraded the sound in my car. :smiley:
Ideally i was thinking of adding a type of crossover so the speakers mounted in all the doors would play mid n tops, n then add a bass speaker in the boot.
Anybody know of a decentish crossover that can do this?
Also the pros n cons of doing it this way?
If i added a 12" sub in the back would my battery keep dying on me?

if you buy component speakers for the front they will come with there own crossovers and no a sub wont drain the battery aslong as the engine is running

I'm kind of confused. Do you mean you want a component set of speakers which consist of a crossover box; woofer speaker (for the door) and tweeter speaker (for the dash/windscreen pillars)? If that's the case, depends what your budget it, I would always highly recommend Infinity myself.
As for the sub, I'm sure your battery will cope, I've got a 13 year old MK3, not upgraded the battery and run and amp to the sub and components and it's fine. Just don't leave it on when the engine is off otherwise it'll drain power :)

you already have a mid and tweet set up in the car so adding a crossover wont make much difference because your tweets are already filtered from the factory best is to buy new comps imoi fit this stuff for a job and ive had to do stuff like this and in the end it never works and cost more in the long run. ie you buy crossovers and end up buying them again when you buy new speakers lol

Technically, yes it is pointless but, if you're amping them instead of using the headunit amp, it is worth having a crossover in there. In my opinion anyway. The tweeter is where crossover is effectively, as if you take the tweeter out there are a second set of wires that are for the woofer, so where the sound comes from, it travels to the tweeter, then down to the woofer.
Now what I'm saying is, by putting in a new set of components, you'll going to have to cut the block wires that are plugged into the tweeter and woofer in the door card. Reason being the majority of aftermarket speakers have speaker terminals instead.
Now in doing this, how does the sound get to the woofer? Yes you'll have a speaker wire connected to the tweeter but what about that loose woofer connection? That's why a crossover is essential. As you ignore the cable that originally ran to the tweeter, if you're amping them as you'll now use the speaker cable coming from the amp, take this into the input of the crossover, then there are two outputs, 1 for the tweeter and 1 for the woofer. The new tweeter will come with a cable attached to it most likely, then it's just a case of wiring it in, same for the new woofer.

Ideally id want to change the bass unit in the doors to play mid only, and keep (possibly upgrade) the tweeters
Wont be adding an amp to the mids n tweets!!
Will be addin an amp to the bass in the boot though, confused yet?
Once the above is done then id stick a 12" bass speaker in the boot

So, if I've read this right, all the "bass" will be coming from the Sub.....
the door speakers will handle all of mid/top end.
If so, yes a crossover will do it, BUT......
Like others have said, it's an "out-there" way of doing it :)
Personally, I'd get some uprated stuff (3way) for the doors/pillars etc and still get a sub :)
