there are hundreds of cars without the issue so you could be spending out for nothing

Visual inpsection for now should do the job

give these guys a bell (http://www.volksmaster.co.uk/) say Tabs of UKMIVS sent you. they can supply a cam for £250 delivered (normally £280 plus postage) it apparently comes from the same factory as the vw cams
the cam from the dealers is around £400

the bear minium you need to change is
followers x 8 (dealers £22 each)
Shell bearings x 10 (£6 each)
cam shaft seal x 1 (£18)
oil x 1 (£24)
oil filter x 1 (£6)

you will more than likely need the cambelt done again (unless it was done not long ago) also the water pump

expect around £300+ labour

mine went last month (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=140425.0) cost me £850 and I never changed the cambelt or water pump as they weren't done long ago

Are the caps machined to match the head? or are there separate bearing shells on a mk4?
Sounds like a very expensive problem, why does this happen?

separate shell bearings
a few theories one being wrong oil used. which mine has only ever been serviced using correct vw oil
another being the followers where made of a weaker metal. so over time the cam wears it down.
vw revised the metal the followers where made out of a few years back. old followers are a shinny silver new ones are black case hardened
also see some 130 and 115 being affected with it now  :lipsrsealed:

I take it when the tappets get worn down the cam lobes also get damaged?

maybe something to do with the injectors working off the cam on PD engines :undecided: and a bad batch of followers

Nad 507 is the newer spec
as long as its 501 or 507
