2nd gear synchro query
« on: 10 February 2003, 18:27 »
Here's a question.  I have to double de clutch(mastered on 57 beetle) down to second gear to prevent a slight crunch.  I have heard that the mk2 has problems with the synchro on high mileage cars.  Does anyone know if there is a decent (read cheap) synchro overhaul kit or someone that does recon boxes for reasonable money.
I am still very new to the gti scene especially as some kind soul wrote mine off for me 3 days after i bought it in Nov last year.(not major but p%$?ed me right off.)  >:(
I only got it back from being fixed the other day so i havent really had a good chance to see where the problems are.

Hiya,

Perhaps best not to let your roots show through anyway!  :P Poor joke...

Cheers for your comment about the forum  :)

A second hand gearbox isn't going to cost a great deal but the labour charge if you can't do it yourself might hurt a bit. Not sure about overhauling it... I place my bets on Rich (richandhazel) answering your question...

cheers,

jv

No, John, not into overhauling gearboxes.....yet ;)
There are second hand ones out there ranging between ?40 to ?100.......thats what I went for in buying that MK2 for spares.....main thing I needed was the gearbox.

Out of curiosity I will have a look in the Bentley tonight and see what , if anything, it says about overhauling the synchro.  :-/

VW recomend you use their synthetic oil for the MK2 gearbox. You can buy it at any dealer. It isn't cheap but is cheaper and easier than changing a box.
I have used this in several cars with the second gear syncro problem and it makes a big improvement. ;)

Nice one 'romney', I had a problem once with my old Audi coupe GT. After a long run at a constant 70-80 mph down the motorway, when I came off I used to find the gears 'sticky', especially 2nd.
Changing the gearbox oil with synthetic fixed it.
Its gotta be worth a go ?;)
Oh and you can also get the genuine stuff from GSF a bit cheaper.
