AGU Gear Linkage
« on: 24 July 2013, 10:27 »
Hello all,

Can you please confirm if the AGU engined models have the adjustment applicable like the ones I've been reading about.  Do these engines also have this feature with the spring clips in the engine bay?

Its just that all of a sudden my 1st gear has become occasionally stiff, but only from neutral position.  If I select it from 2nd gear then it goes in fine.

From what I know the AGU only has one linkage that's adjustable.

Thanks for the reply Tony.  My car is 03/99 model and I think it has the earlier type of gear linkage, possibly from the MK3.

I couldn't find the 'L' shaped adjuster lug, which is used to adjust the linkage under the bonnet.  It also seems that my linkage doesn't have the spring clips, which you would turn and compress.

Thanks to all for your help and advice, but as my car is such an earlier model it has to be done following this method:

http://hostapix.co.uk/VAG-PDFs/Servicing%20gear%20selector%20mechanism%20up%20to%2005.99.pdf

This is just beyond my capabilities, so I'll leave it to my specialist.  To be honest, I've had this golf for almost 7 years and have literally poured money into it, in order to keep it running sweet.  I've really come to the end of my tether and decided to now sell and move on.  It's my wife's car and she loves it.

I was going to replace it with something Japanese, just to get some degree of reliability, as I enjoy with my car, a Subaru.  But I know there's no Jap hatchback that can rival a Golf GTI.  So, I may be on the lookout for a MK6 Gti!
