Id like to get a Mk2 GTi 8v, I'm going to Uni in september and as such it would only be used very occasionally when I come back and will likely spend more time in the garage being tinkered about with and id be using my bike for any commuting etc, especially in the summer. Are insurance companies going to laugh at me and point blank refuse me insurance, or will they say yes.....just send us an arm and a leg by standard parcels and we'll insure you. Is there any way I can get a half reasonable premium......e.g. about a grand??
Oh if it helps ive done my pass plus and ROSPA advanced drivers test.
thanks,
radge

know of a few students on here with Rados and GTi's, depends on how far you can stretch ya student loan I suppose :undecided:
-
well, Im planning on using the sale of my 306 to pay for the Golf. Then wages from work to pay for insurance......so lets say im going to have 1500 quid???
Would a Corrado be a better bet?
-
dunno, all depends on what ya want, :undecided:
-
prefer a Mk2 Golf to be honest.
Are there any insurers that specialise in golf insurance, or count membership to clubs/forums as a discount?
-
HIC, who sponsor this section
-
Ill give them a bell sometime....
thanks!
-
tbh i couldnt find insurance much cheaper than 1500 for my mk3 8v (same engine as the late mk2's) and im 20..

I paid £1200 on a '95 1.3 Ford Fiesta when I was 19, and am now looking at paying £1600 on an 8v mk2 1.8 GTI, though I do have a claim against me, you're prob still gonna be lucky to find something like that. Good luck is all I can say, you're best bet may be eCar. I've read up on reviews, and apparently, contacting them for a claim is a b!tch, but other than that, they're ok (can't comment yet), but if you're going 3rd Party, Fire and Theft, you're not going to be making a claim anyway
-
HIC only insure 19 and above iirc?
I have a mk2 GTi 8v
Am 19 now, was insured on it at 18 too
£1500 1 year ncb and clean license
:afro:

im being shafted for it but i just have to dig deep to drive the car i want to drive!

one thing about being 43 yrs old is insurance for 1.8 8v 1986 fully comp not using my no claims cause used on the subaru,is only 110.00 as classed as classic car,it does have a abf engine in it if i declared it it would only be 250.just didnt get round to changing log book.oh and being a woman helps, apparently.

hell no, raddo insurance is a stinger mate!
Best bet is to look for a cheap mk2 8v, keep it standard and go with bell.
Good luck, its a bumpy ride

He speaketh the truth.
Or another option (which i went for) is to get your cheapest quote from Bell (with parents as named drivers), then call Chris Knott, Brantacre and the like and get them to match the price. Then further down the line you can add your suspension, exhaust, wheels etc and the premium shouldn't be affected with the specialist insurers, unlike Bell.

Might be worth waiting a bit mate, think you may be hard pushed to get insured for 1k.
I'm 19 with 2 years ncb. Insured with Admiral for £760 odd 3rd party. Still a stinger! Ring around and see what you can get. Unfortunately a lot of companies wouldn't come near me despite having a clean license. It also dropped considerably with my mum on the policy as a named driver which is ridiculous considering it's my car, my policy and she never drives the thing! It all boils down to the stereotypes unfortunately and young drivers all get tared with the same brush :undecided:
Best of luck

Go out with an old burd...
My MKV GTi insurance is less now than my diesel Grande Punto Sporting was last year
Group 6 Vs Group 17... go figure...

All I can say is good luck. I'm in my mid twentys, 1 year NCB and I'm paying just shy of a grand. Seriously though, hope you get the mk2 because they are stunning little cars.
-
Well i'm insured on a mk4 1.8 20v turbo. For just over 1200 and i'm 18! Pays to have a ped for the no claims!

I couldn't find anyone to accept my ncb from a moped. They'd accept bike ncb, but not moped, which annoyed me a little!
-
Can't believe how much difference a couple of years makes..I'm 22, got 1 years NCB and I'm paying just over £400 (my own name) on a mk3 2.0-8v..Thats with direct line.
-
Im 21, last year my insurance was £800 a year on my 16v golf, 2 years driving and ncb. Just renewed with HIC and its £440 :D TPFT tho.
