I wonder just how much computer hardware and software will limit future classic cars?

Those aren't components you can readily replicate. Mechanical bits someone can always copy, computers not so much.

So why would it be difficult to replicate the computer bits?

Because they are complex things. At best you'd be trying to make something which reacted to the same control inputs and delivered the same outputs.

I'd guess VAG having the plans to everything and lack of volume for a 3rd party manufacturer to invest in replicating the technology for the demand out there. When people talk about £2100 to replace entertainment units £780 for a new virtual dash screen etc. The mind boggles what some of the bills could run to on this new tech with unknown long term reliability for the banger enthusiast down the line.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

That Mk 1 is just a thing of beauty - what the heck would that be worth now??

Well, I saw an immaculate Mk1 recently up for £30k. Gulp!

This one sold for £27600:

Yes, effectively only worth around about as much as it was new- and that’s after it has had £1000s spent on it, has hardly been used and well after it has reached “ modern classic “ status.
Hard to say where values will go from here as they get rarer, but it does show that “ as an investment “ is another poor reason to buy one.
