The rear sensor is the one that dims the rear view mirror.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I did think it may be a bit odd there was a light sensor for dimming headlights in the rear? Thanks Dubber for making it clearer what the rear sensor would be.

I never leave it set to Auto anyway - prefer to make the decisions re lighting all by myself!

Yeah - its annoying that the auto lights seem to come on at times when they arent needed but I've noticed that with auto off when you unlock the car you don't get front and rear lights turning on?

I'd rather have the light come on earlier than later.

Are you worried about them wearing out or the impact on fuel consumption (almost none) or something else?

I now have the verdict about my fault with the headlight controls.  Apparently as I suspected 'Fault automatic headlight control' flashing up on your dashboard means faulty sensor.  I have to take the car back to the dealer to get a new one fitted on the windscreen.
