Driven the new GTI for the first time properly after getting it on Thursday evening. Spent all day yesterday detailing the car and fitting a few bits and pieces (see the new arrivals thread for details). Even drove it on the motorway at a whole 65mph (woo hoo)  ;D ;D

Driven the new GTI to work for the first time. Obviously wasn't expecting to get anywhere near the GTD's fuel economy, but was a little surprised that for a journey in which the GTD would typically get 45-48 mpg, the GTI only managed 32 mpg (and that was taking it easy) - gulp !  :D :D

Obviously the GTI only has 60 miles on it at present so is possibly quite tight, and should loosen up somewhat. Was hoping for around 35-36 mpg for the same journey, so like I say, hopefully as the miles increase the economy will get better ?

In any case, as brilliant as the GTD was as an all rounder, the GTI even with it's tiny mileage, really wants to go and feels much more sprightly than the GTD, and I was really shocked at just how quiet and smooth these cars are, even running 19" wheels.

Everything I've read and seen suggests that a GTI has about 75% of the MPG figure you'd get from a GTD.

If you allow for a bit of running in tightness, what you got I'd say that was about right.

In my experience, low to mid 30's MPG is pretty normal for a MK7 GTI. You'll get a bit more on extended (and relaxed!) runs. I think your commutes and mileage is pretty low right? If so, 32-35 is probably going to be your typical average.

I say, forget it, don't sweat a few MPG and just drive on and enjoy it. When doing small miles does it really matter that much in the overall scheme...

I do fairly short commutes and average around the 30 mark but on a run at a steady 75 n a few short blasts did 37.6 and tbh I'm happy with that as I told a mate of mine you don't buy a performance car then count the fuel millage

tbh to get anything over thirty from a 2.0l turbo 230+ bhp engine is quite frankly a miracle of modern engine design... years gone by you'd never get anywhere near that!
