This is from an AutoExpress email article i received 24 May regarding the MK8, but then it went on to discuss the 7.5

The facelifted Golf Mk7, known as the Mk7.5, has been recalled five times so far by Volkswagen, but the Golf Mk8 has yet to be recalled for anything, which is encouraging. The problems that have cropped up for the Golf Mk7.5 include poorly made rear wheel hubs, incorrect brake discs fitted on the production line, unsecure front head restraints and poorly made rear head restraint mountings. The most recent recall was issued in June 2020 because of glitches with the e-call system, but so far the Golf Mk8 has a clean bill of health.

My local service manager is avoiding my emails/calls and I can't get a response from AE regarding this, so VW will probably not help out. When i mentioned it before to my dealer, they said purchase new rear discs, as it's all one unit

According to gov.uk website, there appears to be only one safety recall on the mk7 Golf relating to the rear hub assemblies and it was wheel bearing related back in 2017 - see screenshot below. There are other safety recalls listed over the life of the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf but I couldn’t see any others that relate to the rear hubs.

The part of the ‘hub’ that corrodes that can be seen is the centre section of the brake disc rather the hub itself. Brake discs are usually made from cast iron, so if they have minimal protection applied when they’re manufactured, then they’ll corrode. It doesn’t just affect VW; it’ll be fairly common with other car manufacturers too.

It’s been discussed many times over the years on the forum and as @joe6 has suggested, removing the wheels, rubbing down the centre section and painting it (a couple of coats of something like Hammerite) should give 2-3 (or more) years of protection.

Any more details on this 'recall' as it's not something my garage has mentioned?  I haven't had any communication from my garage about any offers and I finish paying for my 'black Friday' service plan in November so hopefully something similar will pop up to sign-up to (I already have road assist and an extended warranty which I bought at the same time as the car).

Just looked up recall info. As you say 5 recalls for the mk7.5. These include poorly built rear axles, incorrectly fitted brake discs on the production line, unsafe front guards?, and rear end racks? with the latest recall in June 2020 for sos button as you mention. You can go onto the vw website recall section and put in your vin to see if there are outstanding recalls for you. Sorry USA vw website for the check it seems and not sure if the recalls are also USA only?

Mk7 / mk7.5 Golfs for the North American market were built in VW’s Puebla plant in Mexico and not Wolfsburg. So it’s possible the recalls may have been USA only, if parts / components used by Puebla are sourced from different suppliers to those used by VW’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany.

So for my 2019 car should I have been contacted about any UK recalls?

Safety recalls, yes. Safety recalls are governed by the VOSA and owners will receive an official communication through the post, providing them with details of the safety recall and what steps need to be taken.

VW also refer to some service actions as recalls; these aren’t safety recalls - they might be such things as software updates to rectify non-safety related issues, and these service actions are normally dealt with when an owner’s car is next at a dealership for servicing work. As part of the service procedure, I think the dealership should automatically check for outstanding service actions and apply them to the vehicle.

Vehicles serviced and maintained by an independent VW specialist may not get service updates applied, as the indie specialist may not have access to the updates.

I second SRGTD comments about main dealerships and service recalls. However, personal experience has shown that they are not always up to speed with updates. I had a fault that the dealership thought required a sensor replacement which they completed and the fault returned within a few days. A vw roadside recovery guy who came out for a different fault identified there was a tpi out for the original fault and a software update was actually needed which he did. These vw recovery guys seem to be really good.

Car has now been in main dealership for 25 hours.... They were taking the gearbox out to source a leak (probably the rear main crank seal). They were very coy about whether the all-in warranty would cover this and stated they would update me... In my view it is non-negotiable, as the all-in warranty covers 'ALL mechanical components'.

I have literally heard nothing from said dealership 25 hours later and counting... Why are dealerships so utterly appalling at communication!?

Yes, the All In warranty does state it covers all electrical and mechanical factory fitted components against electrical and mechanical failure. However………….don’t be surprised if the dealership or VW point to the ‘what is not covered’ section of the warranty which has an exclusion of bodywork including seals. I would argue that as seals have been included with bodywork, then the intention is to exclude bodywork-related seals such as door and window seals and not mechanical-related seals such as the main crank seal.

Also, under the ‘Meaning of words’ section, electrical or mechanical failure is defined as ’the sudden and unexpected failure of a component which is covered by this Warranty and which needs immediate repair or replacement’. The dealer or VW might argue a leaking seal happens gradually over time and isn’t a sudden event. I doubt it could be proved with absolute certainty that the seal has been leaking gradually over a prolonged period - if it had, then shouldn’t it have been picked up by the dealership when they carried out the eligibility check (presumably done recently?) for the All In warranty product.

Hope it’s all covered and it’s just a case of the dealer carrying out the repairs. Please provide an update when you hear back from the dealer.

Thanks for this and finally received a response from the dealership... The rear main crank seal needs replacing and thankfully this is covered under the VW all-in warranty. I am so relieved! As is my wallet, or not as the case stands ;)

Hopefully this may prove useful to others in similar positions. I cannot recommend the all-in warranty enough!! And I only pay £25 per month too! Will get my car back tomorrow close of play.

Good result. Pleased for you. Provides some confidence that the warranty is worthwhile. Did they have to replace the clutch assembly because of oil contamination as well?
