I had exactly the same problem on my Mk3 97 8v. I was getting 210 miles to a tank, it was down on power and sounded dog rough. took it to local vw dealer. problem was a faulty Temprature Sensor. When this was replaced the throttle has to be recoded. Also get the Throttle Valve control cleaned out. I did all this and it runs absolutely superbly. 28-30mpg average round town. loads more power and really smooth. VW garage charged me ?70 for the temperature and sensor.

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone of you have experienced this before. But my Golf Mk3 8v GTI, when I start it from cold it just wants to cut out. However if I press and hold the accelerator and keep it at idle manaully it wont switch off, but there is serious lack in power when driving it and very slugish. When I put my foot down, it doesnt accelerate that well at all. My local garage reset the ECU (cleared the faults off in memory) cos they advised that there was nothing wrong with any hardware parts and a fault with the Temp Sensor was showing but when they checked the sensor - it was fine, after the ECU reset, the car then was fine for about 2 months. But it has now started doing it again. Any advise Please?
