Hi Folks,
Thought I may as well do a project thread for the old bus as well as the one for the golf. As with the Golf this has been a project on stupidly tight budget.
So where to start? Well when getting married me and the then future Mrs Horney™ decided we'd honeymoon round cornwall in her mini and a tent. I got made redundant 4 months before the wedding so I thought I'd blow the redundancy money on a Bay window. I quickly realised £2K was going to get me a total sh!tter. We gave up on the idea and went back to the original plan to tent it.
A few weeks later I chanced upon an Ad on Vzi and after a test drive and parting with £900 this was parked outside Chez Horney™.

1 empty 1989 T3 Panel van in baby blue with 12 months MOT, 6 months tax and only 70K on the clock with a full service history. It had already been fitted with captains seats (Moving arm rests), a slider with a window and the Merc Penta alloys. Bargain!
Pics form honeymoon:

I could waffle on about the how it developed but frankly it's all rather dull so I'll do it in bullet point.
* Made really rubbish homebrew interior that lasted 12 months and did the job
* Ripped it out and bought a used interior that was also a homebrew but made by someone who knew how to cut wood in a straight line, unlike me.
* Dropped 60mm
* Fitted Empi back box
* Refurbed the wheels myself.
* Covered it in stickers
* Went to lots of Dub shows and got very drunk in it.
So after 2 years it now looks like this:

(Interior shots a bit out of date)
She needs a bit of work this year as the dreaded tin worm is getting rampantly out of control. I'll be repainting her in the spring after sorting the grot. THinking of staying blue at the bottom but going for Old English White for the top half with some kind of surfy graffics on the side panels. The interior is now insulated but still needs properly boarding up and covering with some meterial of some sort.
Total cost so far is just shy of £2K and I have to say that it's been worth every penny. Well except the horrific fuel consumption with it being a 1.9 petrol. You buys think your ED30's and VR's a thirsty, you ain't got nothing on this bad boy!!!

Get it Subaru-ed.
I'd offer some advice, but as has been thoroughly documented by certain people I know nothing about installing Subaru engines in T25s......
-
I have always wanted one of these.......one day!
looking good Nick, how reliable has she been?

Not on my budget mate. Maybe on day in the future.

That's the $64m dollar question. So far yes but you've probably jinxed it! Only thing I've had is a loose battery cable. That said I've not fired it up in 4 months so we'll see what happens this weekend when I give her a clean out and a fire up.
Nick
-
love it :afro:
Dinx

When are you sticking a vV6 lump in there then? ;)

i love this, you should get some 18"s on her! then get her decked! look forward to some bacon at stoner!
-
Bloody thing wouldn't start today, serves me right for leaving it so long. Battery is foooooooked.
Nick
-
Huzzah! Got her running and took her out for a trundle. Only other thing that needed doing was freeing off the handbrake which dumbass here had left on for 5 months. DOH!
Some snaps taken today:

Great lil ride that is! Any trouble with MOT's?

Great lil ride that is! Any trouble with MOT's?
Cheers bud. Not really any MOT trouble, last year just needed a couple of brake pipes and a new Brake Master Cylinder. All done in a day. Not sure about this year. I know the exhaust needs patching (A new one is 500 quid so not going there!), the bumper cap needs refitting as it has a sharp edge and some wiper blades.
Nick
-
looks good mate - wouldnt fancy 3 staging a van like - but imagine it would come up a treat
-
mmmmmmmmmmm! Bacon!

tosser! Shouldve come up to reaading, I was canin around in mine, cud have had the worlds slowest drag race on the Idr!

Thought I better update this thread as it's been a while. Not much to report really as it hasn't been moved or started since the pics above were taken, that's right I've not touched it since march!!!!!!
I've had this week off to sort it out for an MOT next week but due to the wife breaking her mini on tuesday I had to repair that first!
The list of jobs currently stands at:
* Sort out battery, renew or recharge depending on whether it'll hold charge.
* pair of new wiper blades.
* Patch exhaust
* Replace clutch master cylinder (Done just needs bleeding)
* Replace bumper end caps (ordered and awaiting delivery)
* Last time I drove it (September 07!!!!!) I was told the brake lights were flickering so need to look into that.
* Dash warning lights don't work
* Handbrake seized on
* Discs badly corroded
* Clean out the inside as it's still full of Summer 07 junk and the old interior from the passat!
All the above needs doing for the MOT which is booked for wednesday next week. I also have ordered a vat of Satin Nato green and a some Satin Yellow. Once MOT's the new paint scheme will be the next job!
Nick
-
you bought nato green paint  :lipsrsealed:
-
Well the battery is well foooked and I've given up, just don't have the passion for it anymore. Not to mention the passat is now not starting either and no fecker wants to buy it so I have two non working vehicles sitting outside the flat costing me money! Half tempted to ring the scrap man and get him to take both away and try not to think about the £1,000's I have spent!
Nick
-
Got it fooking started! That's cheered me up no end after hours of messing about with it today. Enthusiasm renewed for another day!
Will crack on getting it road worthy tomorrow and then get it to it's MOT and wednesday and see what sort of list I get back. Them I'll decide what to do with it.
nick
-
 Do you need decent wiper blades for the MOT? Mine arent at the stage i need to change them yet but they arent the best!
-
Mate they've completely fallen to bits! Ha ha.
nick
-
Ahh i see how that could be a problem then lol sorry mate!
Got a question to ask you but ill PM as I dont wana get in trouble for taking this Off Topic!
-
mate - you know only too well what can be done in a couple of days. look at my CL
if you need a hand let me know, i might need to escape the madhouse
-
A kind offer mate. I'm working on it tomorrow then I'm working for Jord on fri night and all day saturday. Sunday I'm off to a show.
Nick
-
ok mate - well if your stuck and its a 2 man job let me know
i would say bring it up here and i will sort it for ya - but with 4 cars , son in laws and 2 awaiting a valet, my neighbours, and my boss at work is getting a bit miffed with my fleet at the mo
and DONT SCRAP IT - not til you talk to me in a downhearted mood   :lipsrsealed:
-
Cheers bud, I'll keep you posted. It's my own fault for leaving it stood for 9 months.
Nick

Update
* Sort out battery, renew or recharge depending on whether it'll hold charge. - Robbed the one from the 'sat
* pair of new wiper blades.
* Patch exhaust -Done
* Replace clutch master cylinder and bleed system - Done
* Replace bumper end caps - Arrived, need to be fitted
* Last time I drove it (September 07!!!!!) I was told the brake lights were flickering so need to look into that. - They seem OK
* Dash warning lights don't work
* Handbrake seized on - Freed off and all good
* Discs badly corroded - A few runs up and down the close have done wonders!
* Clean out the inside as it's still full of Summer 07 junk and the old interior from the passat! - started but not finished
New problem, the thermostat seems to be jammed shut as it's not heatin gup the pipes under the van or the rad. Will have to investigate next weekend. This means the MOT next week has had to be canceled as I'm not driving it anywhere or leaving it with someone if it's likely to boil up as this normally kills the engines on these.
Nick
-
Update
It's booked in for an MOT tomorrow, got loads to do today and it's raining :-(
* Sort out battery, renew or recharge depending on whether it'll hold charge. - Gonna pick up a new one from hellfrauds in a bit
* pair of new wiper blades. - As above
* Patch exhaust - Found another blow, doh! Best get the putty out again.
* Dash warning lights don't work - Gonna clean up all the earths and connectors and see if that helps
* Discs badly corroded - A few runs up and down the close have done wonders!
* Clean out the inside as it's still full of Summer 07 junk - started but not finished
Nick
-
Doesnt sound too bad as long as you can get the warning lights and exhaust sorted!
-
Well I've got wednesday off to sort anything it fails on. Problem is the tax is out on friday and I have no offroad parking so if it's bad I may just have to hand over the old plastic and get the garage to sort it and I'll pretend the bill doesn't exist for a while!
Nick
-
lol Ignoring it seems to be the way at the moment! Cant be much it can fail on is there? Have you checked for rot/rust underneath?
-
It's pretty solid so I'm not worried about that, it's more brakes and emissions as it has only done 4 miles in 12 months!
Nick
-
Ahh right.. Just give it a bit of a blast on the way to the MOT place.. Did wonders for my Mk2
-
Yeah that's the plan. Right best get my arse up to hellfrauds and get shopping for bits.
Nick

Update
* Sort out battery, renew or recharge depending on whether it'll hold charge. - Done, expensive, ow :-(
* pair of new wiper blades. - Sorted
* Patch exhaust - Now not blowing like a lady of the night
* Dash warning lights don't work - No idea, f*ck it
* Discs badly corroded - Done, a few more emergency stops on the way to the garage will help
* Clean out the inside as it's still full of Summer 07 junk - Empty, if not exactly clean!
Gonna drop it off at the garage in a bit and will report back on the length of the failure sheet sometime tomorrow. My guesses are:
Fail
* Flexi pipe unions badly corroded
* Handbrake not good enough
* One leaky headlight
Advise
* Rot on cab steps
* Number plate lights a bit ropey
* Exhaust mostly made of paste
Should have a fun packed day on wednesday not to mention having to service a mates MKIII Golf!! So Chuff, you about wednesday? Ha ha!
Nick
-

-
goof luck with the MOT fella! fingers crossed for you!

Surprise, surprise it failed.
Here's the list.
Emissions.
Er yeah, that's it. They're having a fiddle and gonna try again in a bit!
Nick
-
not too bad mate
-
I can't fecking believe it mate. It's not been driven on a proper run in 18 months and all I really did was fiddle a bit, pump the tyres up, slam in a new battery and change the wipers. It's running on 18 month old unleaded!
Nick

Looks like I better start looking for captains seats again though :(

worst thing is he knows this as hes used it before lol
-
Whats a trade card? discount?
Congrats on getting it through though horney!
-
So yeah, this might be re-joining the Horney fleet.
Not sure what's going on at the moment but the guy I sold it to a few years a go who lives behind came round last night pissed up and spoke to Lizzie while I was out. Seems that the council or the DVLA or someone has impounded and told him he has 7 days to "sort it" or it gets crushed. He said if we wanted it back we could "sort it" and have it.
I'm going to pop round later to see if he's sober and find out what the score is. I have nowhere to keep it, no money to fix it up or run but I feel I can't let it go to the crusher as me and Lizzie spent our 2 weeks of honeymoon travelling round cornwall in it and it has a lot of memories tied up in it.
As far as I know it last went for an MOT 6 months ago which it failed on emissions only. Since I sold it he's fitted a recon engine and fettled the running gear a bit plus ripped all the rear interior out.
Stay tuned!
-
One of those things man, if you sorted it and sold it on you'd probably make some sort of profit
-
I really don't know what to do with it. Ideally I'd like to be able just to store it somewhere where I can forget about it for a couple of years and then pick up as a project in a few years time.
I think if it's viable to get my hands on it then the first thing to do will be to speak to my folks to see if they'll keep it on the drive for a while and then see if I can Ash to pick it up from wherever it is and take it up there.
Maybe I should see if Marcus wants it?
Nick
-
You need this like you need a hole in your head.
For clarity, that means you do not need it.
-

Oh you're right, but I don't want to see it pointlessly crushed by the suits either.
Nick
-
Start a thread on the Prickyard, or 80-numpty then.
-
If I can rescue it from the crusher I'll work out what to do with it. My Dad's already muttering about taking it on.
Nick
-
Dad's can be useful.
Hope you save it.
-
Spooky, wasn't that long ago when this came up in conversation after I bought mine. Reading back a few pages it seems like you and the van didn't get along too well.
Be good if you can save it but sounds like you need to pass it on to someone unless you intend to get some use out of it.
-
It's going to cost £500+ in release fees and my neighbour has daid he won't sign the paperwork unless I give him £100.
It's therefore a no go as I just don't have that kind of spare cash floating around. I'm really sad about to be honest. Apart from the sentimental aspect of it going to the jaws of a crusher on saturday it's got a recon engine with less than 1K mile son it, merc alloys with new Toyos all round and a lowering kit on it. Such a waste.
Nick
-
£600 for a camper is very cheap, unless it's a complete rot-bucket.
Have you publicised this on any of the camper forums? Someone will go get it and avoid its untimely demise.
-
Send Jord in.
-
Yeah seriously!
WHAT ENGINES IN IT?
-
It's an empty panel van at the moment. Engine is a 1.9 DG Wasserboxer.
nick

Feck me it would almost be worth while for me to just pull the motor out of it, or... if it's in better condition than mine overall, take the good bits off mine and put them on yours, starting with the windows... This is such bad timing as I paid quite a bit more for mine and would have been in a better position to save it had this cropped up a couple of months back.
-
whip round needed. Forum van slag. Comes with added mystery of "A Horney Honeymoon".
-
come on... one of you lot must be able to save this?
-
despite a house with enough parking for 7 vehicles taking my fancy, its too much for me
-
So, what's the verdict?
-
I can't afford it and my neighbour is currently going through a phase of drinking himself into a coma first thing in the morning. Sadly I think it's goign to go to the crusher.
nick
-
Got money but no room  sorry!
-

Hand it over then and park it at mine!
-
Got money but no room  sorry!

What so you can use it as a source vehicle for yours? Yeah right!
And how would I ever get to use it?

No, if it was bought with your money then I wouldn't strip it. Anyway it's probably in better condition than mine so if anything the opposite would be a better option, like fitting my rear windows to it.
You're only a couple of hours away from me, you could go on Northern based camping holidays and pick it up on the way.
-
There would always be that temptation though Shaun......
-

I wouldn't swap the motors over, honest!....
Anyway, this is really annoying. If this is solid then it should be bought and sold on at worse... Len, just do the guy a favour, buy it and we'll sort out the details later.
-
How long before it gets crushed.
IF i could find a place to store it (in Swindon)
