When life gives you lemons........? Help
« on: 20 March 2014, 20:00 »
Bought my third golf today and I'm so worried I made a mistake!

The car is absolutely solid bodywork wise apart from a few expected age related marks and the front anniversary valance needs painting "properly"

Interior is excellent.... Everything works

Brakes need new pads on the front, suspension is good just a rear top mount if your fussy like me

Wheels are all good and rear tyres are near new

BAD POINTS....

I noticed 5 miles up the road that there was quite a lot of white smoke behind me :( whilst I was on idle is when it's bad, I checked the oil over a 90 mile trip home on three occasions just to be sure. My girlfriend was driving behind me and said once I was driving she didn't see any, only at first, but when we refuelled I started the car and the smoke was there again! It's quite bad when it happens and smells both sweet and oily "more sweet" and there is a sporadic "oil sensor workshop" that flashes up when starting, 4/5 times.

The oil looks really new and the level was perfect there and back and the turbo was working perfect, I know it could be bad news but I thought maybe it is fixable so please give me some good news

White smoke is not a good sign, Have you tired un-doing the oil cap? is there any mayo like stuff on the cap?

Could be a number of things, Head gasket, bad fuel, really bad boost leak.

shame your not closer to me Id scan it for you.

Oh damn. Take it back to the seller. Did you give him cash? Did you sign any paper to say sold as seen? I forgot to say always take someone down with you who knows more about cars than yourself. I hope it aint bad and just a boost leak from a pipe.

Have you checked the antifreeze? has it got oil in there?

The sweet smell would suggest that the antifreeze is leaking into the combustion chamber.
Have you double checked for sure what the colour of the smoke is?

Blue = oil in combustion chamber
White = Water in combustion chamber

Ether way it will ether be head gasket, worn block or broken piston rings.

Personally Id take it back unless you can buget £400-700

Yes, sounds like head gasket, block or the piston rings. Get it compression tested and squirt a little oil in the cylinder that's low on compression and compression test again. If the compression goes up, it's the rings.

Okay the seller has given me £150 back, he says it was running fine? I guess now I need someone sensible do look at it for me, the smoke has died right down now as I took it for a spin? I don't mind travelling to anyone who fancies looking at it and taking the job on?
