'96 GL mk3 'box whine
« on: 01 May 2010, 10:50 »
Morning all,

I've posted on here before about the same car (essentially just scrap on wheels now) and the problems it's had with the engine.

Well, now the 'box has started playing up, too....

It whines like a mother from 40mph upwards, and gets a bit noisy from 60mph up. Am I running any major risks from taking it on the motorways? I only use them if I really have to, as the noise just gets so infuriating after a bit.

Plus, can I change the transmission oil? And will it at least help to dull the noise?

I'm really not bothered about getting a new 'box or anything like that, I just want to make sure it won't drop it's guts on me when I least expect it.

It should be heading to the big scrap yard in the sky soon... hopefully replaced by a nice 306 GTI6

It should carry on but on the otherhand could fail quickly.
