If using Android Auto and assuming you have the Infotainment version that doesn't allow AA to connect via Bluetooth, then you need to have the phone plugged in to get Spotify going and to access playlists.  You can buy really short cables so that you don't have excess wire messing up your centre console.

I do indeed have an Android phone so Android Auto will be the thing for me to try rather than Apple Car Play which may work for others.

Success!  Had to buy a £6 USB-C to USB-C cable from Currys as you have to connect your phone via the cable first time, but it should work wirelessly from now on.

Spotify just requires a swipe on the main screen to access.  Happy days.
