I retrofitted a rcd510 and had to add a module (( under the passenger seat) that set up Bluetooth and hands free and microphone. Also had to buy a retrofitted wiring harness. Did this about 8  years ago  and no problems since. As Nino says the microphone only muting is a key indicator that module not fitted. Fairly easy retrofit.

If it's got the RCD510 with Dynaudio, the Bluetooth isn't actually built into the head unit itself on most cars it relies on a separate Bluetooth module (usually located under the passenger seat, next to/near the amp depending on spec).

The fact the phone button just mutes the radio is a good clue that the car doesn't currently have a working phone module fitted or it's not communicating with the CAN system. The Bluetooth audio menu can still appear on some RCD510 units even when there isn't a module connected, which is a bit confusing.

The module should normally show up on a scan with VCDS/OBDeleven as well, so that would be worth checking. If there is no module under the seat other than the Dynaudio amp, chances are it was never fitted or has been removed at some point.

The good news is it's a pretty common retrofit. A genuine VW 9W7 module (or similar) will give you proper hands-free and Bluetooth streaming, and it integrates nicely with the RCD510/MFD. Just make sure it's coded correctly afterwards.

Your phone being "too new" is very unlikely if the module was present and working you'd normally at least see a VW/PHONE Bluetooth device to pair with. Sounds more like the car is missing the hardware rather than a compatibility issue.

Always wanted a GTI and now i can tick it off the bucket list, in the week i've had it, definitely should have done it sooner.

Had mk5 and mk7 TDI's in the past, so i know the Golf was good, but GTI is soooo much better..

In hindsight a rushed purchase. I was eyeing a silver one of autotrader, but that sold, this was the only other one relatively local in my price range, so went and saw it, drove it and bought it.
Being the first one i've seen and driven, that probably wasn't the wisest thing to do. However knocked a decent amount off the asking price and it was under 4k, so i figure i shouldn't loose too much while i have some fun.

in short - 2010 GTI in Tornado red, manual with jacara seats (both were a must for me), also has Dynaudio and (i think) the RCD510

In the light of day / warning signs i should have paid more attention to:

Car history - recent history flaky, but early life looks reasonable with a stack of receipts
body condition - all wheels kerbed, little dent in roof, headliner sagging and has been stapled.

On the upside
engine - appears good, no smoke or noises, pulls very well all the way up to 6k
   - I know the timing chain is an issue, so planning to get it measured via OBD and take it from there.
overall (i keep telling myself) - it looks ok for its age.

I know it could do with some love and TLC, so will see how we go..

Done 1 long trip with the family during which the tyre pressure warning lit up on the way (which i reset) and the EML lit up on the way back. Was still driving ok, but will have to get an OBD scanner onto it.
