I'm 17 and so don't always know whats best :p
there's a couple around me, but never checked them out. will go and give a look mon/tues and see if i can have a nose around. I might just find some goodies!
LL
Ok so here's an update of what I been doing (or trying to do  )
I found some red sparco pedals that i must have bought a while back without knowing! Couldn't be arsed to drill holes to bolt them on, so just used some super duper double side tape. They are actually on there pretty good, needs some force to rip them off. Only probs with the pedals is that the accelerator is too big and i'm afraid that when i brake i'm going to accelerate too! Haven't driven it with them on yet, but if it is a problem, i will just rip it off. (would make it easier to down shift though). Anyway, heres a pic:

Love it mate, I really don't like bright coloured cars, but you've done this for me, I'd drive it anyday!!!

cheers m8!!!! i have done some engine work to make it look better. It aint going any faster, so why not make it look better? Sprayed parts of it black. Will get pics up 2moz.
People have said i've done well with such a tight budget.
LL ;)
Due in a scrapyard any day now?

Ah man, I thought you'd gone & done us all a favor & fcuked off.
What is it that makes you thing you can put people down. LL has put sh!t loads of effort into that car, & I'd wager it's worth more to him & many others than your sh!tty wreck.
You know when someone's upset when they go to all that effort, don't you.
Best not judge my life by your standards.

What I say;You know when someone's upset when they go to all that effort, don't you.

What I mean (and quietly feel in side);
"Someone went to all that effort me? Ah guys, man it's almost like I have 'real' friends, this'll shut Mum up next time she says I should get out more"
"I'd best not judge my life by any standard... boo hoo hoo!"
:afro:
Sounds like some good sh!t going on with it dude, I'd like to do the same with the repairing the body etc, I've grown attached to my car you see, so want to keep it, but need a faster engine, I'm thinking 8V ;)
Will be good to see what it looks like next Sunday! And also gotta tell me how to do the headlight thing, I'd get that done tomorrow :D ready for the meet haha!

To be honest, your best bet with what you would get if you sold it plus it is clean and tidy for its age, would be to drop a 8V or 16V in it, cheap and easy enough to pick a doner car.
Sorry for the hijack.
I would pick the 20V or ABF over a VR6.
looks da sh!t.
just needs a GTI grill in red and red headlamps and its all good
and sharpie needs to crawl back up that bum hole
I think LL has done a f**kin superb job :)

How come you don't give me any sh!t for my 1.8 then DH?
Sorry but thats harsh and uncalled for, we have all not got endless amounts of money and we all started somewhere, I think it is miles above barryboys crap, yes it is a 1.4 but will have a bigger engine one day.
This is my first car, first project. I'm 17 and so don't always know whats best
It's still a 1.4 Yeah so all younger golf drivers should have gti's?? what an idiotic thing to say with insurance costs and inexperience
It's still Barryboys.co.uk fodder. Yeah as it's got a huge kit and takky flekk paint :undecided:..it will fit in well there? Maybe you should go and have a look on there as its sounds like you dont know what the site is?
It's still proof you can't polish a turd. Well I'm sure you'll polish up quite well??

honest but polite chris :afro:
Im feeling the azevs! what size are they, look 16'ish to me?
Liking the progression in this thread, even if it is very budggetty, but who cares, reminds me of me lol.
seriously dont like the tints though, but then i am a full blown tint hater. Also, get the grille painted, not liking the black / red clash myself.

LL's car still looks 20x better than your sh!tty syncro.
I still wouldn't want you banned - it's entertaining watching a fully grown man b!tch over the internet. LOL.
looking v.good LL, well done!
I'd say as long as you're intending to spray it, no point in painting it to only paint over it again.
I'd leave the lights black if I'm honest, although with matt blue that would look excellent

Takes at least two to tango, that includes you and - hey - the scales say I'm not fully grown yet - I've put weight on in the past 6 weeks.
Perhaps step away from the keyboard once in a while & do some exercise!
Where you putting your front license plate dude? I hope not where Mikester put his when he did this lol!
Good tip for the front number plate is to hold it on with magnets, then it is easy to remove for shows etc.
i like the tints. they show you empathise with the people that have to sit in the back.

wont work very well with the way its going to be on. i got loads of cable ties so just cut them and use new ones when it needs to come off.
cheers though :afro:
LL ;)
Sounds like it will be f**king ace man, I always look forward to your unique things you do with the car, no doubt I'll be a "WTF have you done to the splitter" person but lol!
C'mon man get some pics up! I'm getting a MK3 1.4 and I need some inspiration, and this thread has given me some!
Shame mines not red though :( or even dragon green, never thought I'd like a green car.
I love the red and the Candy Blue or something.
If only I could respray mine Cobalt blue. MMMM
Pics mate
Cheers for the inspirtation!
Might take 16 secs to get to 60, but atleast it's a Golf, right?
K, the bumpers are coming along, havent been working on them as work has been hectic and the weekend was CRAZY!!!! hahahahaha!!!!
I said before i did something to the splitter, need to post a pic up, imo its cool. I have had mixed opinions, which was expected. Both "PHAT!!!" and "what the f*ck have you done!?!?"
So pics to come for this.
More pics of the bumpers soon too.
Looking at getting a mk3 gti donor too, found one, just need to win the bidding. will use the brakes from that, bonnet and a couple other bits.
Ohh and looking for some yellow film to cover the hellas with, mmmmmmm yellow hellas, never seen them before, ever.
Will be a unique car once it all gets done, crazy splitter, yellow hellas, matt dark blue paint work with smoothed body and holding a 1.8t under the hood, which with some work, should be pushing 260bhp! But probs wont lol!
LL ;)
Bumpers should look ace when done mate, nice plans for the rest of it too! What about colour coding the grill?
Not really feeling the splitter though but thats jut my opinion of course :)
Is that slammed as much as it will go on the coilovers?
OK, noticed this the other day:
need a power cap, as all lights in the car dim with basslines, haha too much power going to the sound system!!! even headlights dim, quite funny at night, caus its in time with music (of course). and it doesnt dim a lot, just noticable and doesnt affect vision or anything.
going to dynomat the doors and boot too soon, too much vibration.
LL ;)

pretty much new one and its a good one.
i run 2 subs off a monoblock, so when the peak power comes in, the amp sucks up a lot of juice! Not to mention the other amp for the speakers!
i reckon you need more power in your sound system lol!
LL ;)
If you're running 2 subs off one mono-block amp, that may be the cause of the dimming lights.
Running 2x 4ohm speakers reduces the impedance to 2 ohms which many amps will stuggle to power and that will pull more power from the car's battery/alternator.
If your subs are 8ohms each, then the impedance will be reduced to 4ohms in total which can still be a bit low for some amps.
Do you really need 2 subs? Is the extra weight and bass volume really needed?
If you can't do without it, then I would definately recommend you run each one off it's own amp channel.
A power capacitor can only do so much. The alternator on the car may be a bit puny considering you've got the 1.4 engine.
Try disconnecting one sub and see if that helps, if not, try a power cap, if that doesn't help try an uprated alternator.
I would always advise running one speaker/sub per amp channel, it will always sound better.
Surely too far for a 1.4 with a suspect head gasket.
National Express would probably be quicker.
dude i hope you succeed at this better than i did! i spent many summy nights last year doing this! looked absolutely spot on paint went on and two days later loads of craks started forming! i was seriously peeed off! i ended up getting new bumpers and sacking it off lol
Could you do me a favour please dude (if/when you get time)
Could you measure the distance from the bottom of your splitter to the floor.
I know it's a strange request but I would like to know if mine sits lower, or not.
You sure you guys got your measurements correct?
shepgti - I checked your thread and your splitter looks about the same as mine?
My splitter is 3 inches (7.5cm/75mm) from the floor
I'm with you on this bro, mine's 2.5-3 inches off the floor, I scrape the splitter on every speed bump, there's a road opposite my house that has a dip half way down it that I have to slow right down for, there's a road near my mates house that I have to avoid cus my downpipe scrapes right the way down the middle of it, I struggle getting in and out of some car parks, and I can't even use my own driveway so I have to park my car in a residential car park.
And my car is on 17's
The look on their faces?
Where my mate lives, there's a speed bump that goes up, then across, then down again, but on the top part is a zebra crossing.
This old lady was waiting to cross and she had a guide dog so was obviously blind. I pulled up slowly, and instead of stopping before the speed bump, I got half the car up onto it and then stopped just before the crossing, my splitter scraped on the speed bump and to be honest it must have scared the crap out of the blind lady! I felt well bad lmao!
Lmao. I'm tempted to stick my BBS RA's on tomorrow and wind those b!tches down
they just dont understand.........
when people ask me questions about lowness/crazy mods/etc i say this
"if you have to ask, you just wont understand" its a dub thing. mmmmmmmmm sticker idea...............
bbs ra's mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
LL ;)
Lmao. I'm tempted to stick my BBS RA's on tomorrow and wind those b!tches down
do it, i wanna see!!
Something must be wrong with mine then cus I keep managing to smack it on the floor :undecided:

Mine's too high
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa29/GCL731Y/S7001123.jpg)
Must go lower LOL
Something must be wrong with mine then cus I keep managing to smack it on the floor :undecided:
Mine does that....must be the bigger bore that makes issues as mine scrapes loads desite being tucked well up!! (all you with washing machine engines won't understand   says me with an 8v with a 16v/vr exhaust fitted )
keeping the old engine most likely, might use it for something, but no plans atm.
keeping the old engine most likely, might use it for something, but no plans atm.
Boat anchor. Or doorstop...
I still haven't seen this 'work of art' about town yet!!!!
You do realise ....... the rat look means you must sleep with your sister and have a friend called bubba!!
2009 you gotta sleep with ya mum ;)
oh and not to pee on your chips but Ashmond did a K04 conversion on his AUM 1.8T and got lots of problems and in the end said the AUM bottom end isn't up to the power.
2009 you gotta sleep with ya mum ;)
f**k shady...................
engine bay is going to be sprayed too i reckon, dnt think i cba with smoothing. was thinking black silicon hosing, boost pipes, etc and a matt black bay, matt black under hood. taking the rat look to the engine bay too, would need to paint the ali piping black too. an entirely black engine and bay.
.......or maybe green hosing and a different colored bay, dunno yet.
LL ;)
I just thought.... Won't the insurance be sky high?
Hope you're not thinking of dropping in the 1.8T and not telling the insurance company?
Hope you're not thinking of dropping in the 1.8T and not telling the insurance company?
Now we all know LL is stupid.  But surely not that stupid!?
Just kidd'n LL!
I think before anyone decides anything about how clever anyone is, you should get some quotes with your proposed engine.
I think given that you're 18 it might well stall your plans even if you *can* get a quote on it (which is pretty unlikely).
Yeah but he's going to be using of an engine that is effectively from an S3 if it's running the K04 turbo.
oh yes, big power in a crap handling car, and main driver not even grown pubes yet. insurance will be no problem

erm nope doubt it coz my mk 3 easily out handles my old mk2 16v which was on a J plate and i had it in 1996 with only 45k on the clock, the mk2 wasnt lowered tho, and it did handle well, just not as well as the lowered mk 3... and that is a fact my man!
yep i'm sure a mk3 on £150 coilovers will handle great.

since i'm feeling nice and don't mind derailing this topic... fan squeak is a squeaky fan when you turn on the interior fan. it's the fan motor and only squeaks on setting 2. does it on every mk2 i've been in.
squeaking while turning may be your power steering belt, replace belt or tighten up the tensioner.
on a side note - if the moderators were slightly more liberal, there would be far less 'annoying' posts. fact. just look at my sig after i put a rather amusing golf 5 picture.

DH, LL said that he's 19 in April, so he can go on HIC, cheaper.

DH, LL said that he's 19 in April, so he can go on HIC, cheaper.
He might be 19, and HIC might consider insuring him (although they might not with an engine transplant) but at what cost?
The most sensible thing at this point would be to find out if it would be insurable and if so, for how much. Otherwise you're going to wind up with a car that is not only fugly, but potentially undriveable as it won't be possible to insure it for sensible money.

ahhh come on, where's the faith??? :D
will defo speak to HIC about it, seems like they would be the most likely to insure it.
shady - your on a need to know basis!! lol! nahh, i work full time, mon-fri and have very little outgoings.
I bet DH will be the funniest guy at the meet on sat, this is all just a setup so we dont expect it!!! :D

Sorry if this sounds nosey, but say somewhere would insure you - how much is too much to insure? I'm sure some places would insure for £2500+ a year, but is it worth it?
That engine looks the nuts - really hoping you can do this

cheers m8, well i say when insurance gets over £3000, thats pretty damn expensive, even for a young driver. But im willing to pay wateva really, cause it will be totally worth it!!! its going to be soooo much fun driving it around!!! best get a stock of new tyres in, cause i'll be going through a lot i reckon :D
Don't think that works on cars modified to that extent.. it'll require a special policy.
is crazy sums of money for insurance. Personaly id say its a complete waste of money and daft thing to do but its your choiceSorry if this sounds nosey, but say somewhere would insure you - how much is too much to insure? I'm sure some places would insure for £2500+ a year, but is it worth it?

£3k?! dude.. so anything £2500 is OK for a years worth of insurance? there's no way I'd be able to afford that while working 9-5 in a normal job.
i agree it'll be awesome, but too expensive imo
anyway peeps, forget insurance for now, hey?!? it aint your problem, so you dont need to worry about it

When someone says "it's my problem" etc. and doesn't want to discuss it, it may (or may not) mean they're planning on not declaring the slight mod of a new engine :p

if that was the case, it would be very silly to post a build thread on the internet with what he was doing to the car.

Haha quoting my text! I do do things, lol! What you trying to say? I was talking to my mates we went to Cribbs with, saying how your car used to look like a year ago to what it is now, and how much of a project it is and what it's going to be. They were impressed :)
Yes it is good stuff, I have a spare pot if you ever want it.
Unlucky man...that really sucks...when's this conversion going ahead then? Needs to be soon surely?
Got an insurance quote for it yet?
Yeah, best of luck LazyLunatic. You should have waited a few years though.
I had a set of Bonrath Golf3 rear beam inserts here. Someone else has them at the moment, but do you want me to find out if they're surplus?
Sounding like its going to be ace when its done, dont let all the miserable old farts in the world put you off it. Im in the process of buying a 2nd gen rx7 and all people can say is 'that will be a waste of money / cost a fortune'
Wish i'd done this to my mk3 now.
I spoke with him the other day, think he said about 240 - 260BHP. So....yummy lol!

I thought only fitting K-series motors into MG Midgets took this long.

best ones are corrado g60 or passat 16v, shorter ratios. mk3 golf 16v is next best to them.
cheers :)

really? i find the corrado g60 to have cack ratios. 1st and 2nd are too short, and then 3rd is too long lol
cheers bud, just getting them onto the lappy now.
perhaps this will be ratty after all............... :D

Ratty sleeper though!
Tbh mate, i would keep it ratty until you can afford a good spray job. I like ratty mk3's, think they look awesome.
Aslong as there no rust, whats the problem with a few odd colours. It has a turbo!
Pure legend you are. Guts aswell.
Are the mounts the same for the 1.8t engine??

started to build the rear beam back up, but need to retract the piston in the caliper some how so the caliper can fit on.... also the rear beam bushes are f***ing really hard to get back in! need to get a file/dremel on the beam so they can fit in!

What happened to exhausts that go straight down the car?
Haven't you finished this yet?
Are you running a knock-sensor on the engine management? If not you're cooking up one of these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvQtMcETc0g)
hey mate cool project
can i ask where you got the 15 cans of paint from for that price?
thanks
thx mate
is maccess a shop or do you have to be a trader?
it looks sick matte black
porper sleeper
So is the engine in yet?
Crane he made? WTF? Do you really trust that? lol.
So the time scale to getting the engine in?
Do you have the qpeng loom yet?
So when you run the 20v engine, with the mk3 ecu, and the qpeng ecu. Can you:
Get it remapped by say nick at rtech? As the mk3 ecu cant be mapped i dont think?
Also can you do a fault code search, through the obd2 port? For the engine fault codes?
Just wondering these things myself, for furture reference when i make decissions.
ohh and qpeng doesnt run knock sensor DH, but it doesnt need it according to ben.
ohh and qpeng doesnt run knock sensor DH, but it doesnt need it according to ben.
OK, so he says it doesn't need knock control, yeah?
Here's an article about detonation (http://www.contactmagazine.com/Issue54/EngineBasics.html)
Maybe you should ask him how the spark advance is controlled?
With a good knock controller it allows the engine to advance the spark timing until it detects 'detonation', then it pulls the advance back.
Detonation isn't a static thing, it varies with fuel grade and other factors and turbo motors are more prone to detonation.
A very short period of detonation will be enough to shag your rather expensive motor, so unless there's some 'alternative' way of managing detonation I'm curious as to why QPENG don't use knock control.
i've never seen any detonation incidents with qpeng stuff, but you should probably stick an AFR gauge on your list of bits to buy.
Ben did say that he had not seen anything like it. it makes sense that you would need to stick to what the ecu has been mapped for, i.e. 97 octane fuel.
Ben did say that he had not seen anything like it. it makes sense that you would need to stick to what the ecu has been mapped for, i.e. 97 octane fuel.
So what happens if you get a duff batch of fuel, that's only 95RON? You can't control that and that is why engine management systems run knock-control as a feedback loop on the ignition map.
Remember this is something that can take seconds to destroy your engine.
I cannot believe that despite no knock control there have been no detonation-grenaded motors running QPENG.
It's missing a major safeguard that pretty much ALL manufacturers use on their cars. It's so important that (as an example) the ABF uses two knock sensors so it can accurately control the ignition advance.
Also, what happens if you rock up at a petrol station to find they only have 95RON on tap and you're running on fumes?
An AFR gauge won't tell you about detonation. That's what knock sensors are for. An exhaust temperature gauge might help, but it happens so quickly it's all over and done before you can respond to the gauge.
The only way of avoiding it with static ignition mapping is to run a massively conservative map, which will compromise power hugely. Even then, it's still a big risk to take.
ok looking into it a bit more, and found that some tvr's run the mbe ecu, same as what qpeng use. now the mbe ecu doesnt use a knock sensor. although this increase performance, seeing as a knock sensor detunes the engine when needed to reduce pinking and stop it from blowing up. as long as 97 or higher octane fuel is used, then its fine.
i take it a knock sensor is built into the ecu so it cant just be "added" .......
its all very well picking out flaws, but if i cant do anything about it, then thats that.
you have totally lost me now  cant wait to see this project up and running mate, i literally wouldnt know where to start!
Whats the difference between the AGU and BAM engine, as the bam has more bhp, is it just the turbo? Is the bam a KO4? And the AGU a KO3? Is it just the turbo, so an agu with the larger turbo would make the same power?
Cheers
Mike
Have you really not finished this yet?
Well, I'm a bit busy doing 'work' at the moment, but for a fee DannyP might be persuaded to stop by - he's due down your way with a 20V and PD150 loom in the next week or two.....
Good progress.
Looks good, i will have to keep on close on your project for tips and tricks!!
Good progress.
cheers m8 :afro:Looks good, i will have to keep on close on your project for tips and tricks!!
its been in progress for ages now, but its getting there. yeah, give me a shout if you go ahead with your 20vt conversion. if you need any help or any questions, please ask.
ohh and i will have help for the engine fitting, there is only so much you can do on low IQ
Good luck LL
When do you think you will hear it start?

good to see its still goin, cant resist a matt black gti man lookin nice, good luck with the rest of the install man.
can't believe your still on with this  the wait best be worth it!! (and making dh help on a mk3 is priceless!!)

get new flywheel on wednesday now, all good
(and making dh help on a mk3 is priceless!!)
Make sure you threadlock the bolts, or oil will seep through and on to your clutch eventually.
Project looks great, you going to post some youtube videos when the engine is running?
Shady, you do speak a load of shyte.
If he does get there and back I'll buy another Golf3..... to break.
Fair play to you mate, looks like its starting to really get going now, will hopefully see it for real some time soon
Wow, some photographic proof of the progress.
Seriously though, I'm impressed. From where you started as a novice with a plain Mk3 to this, is good going.
Lets see if finished soon.
Looking awesome. You will have to give me some tips early next year when i start mine.
mmmm shiney pipework

haha, yep!
.....although i am tempted by spraying the boost pipes, rocker cover and inlet manifold black :lipsrsealed:
How much were the boost pipes?
So going to have it on the road for next friday?
Leave him alone, lol! It's his car, he'll finish it when he wants :smug:

clutch cable is even worth as the mech is the wrong way, so needs to be pulled towards the front of the car.
What are you doing with the clutch? What parts are you using?
If you're staying cable-actuated, then it *should* pull towards the front and you should be able to just bolt the whole SEAT set up straight up. This should include a bracket that bolts to the top of the gearbox to hold the cable.
Here's a couple of inalienable truths:
Modified cars are here for one reason - to teach us that nothing is ever easy (just ask Len).
Women are here for one reason - to demonstrate all women are mental.
So, I take it you're hitching a lift to E38, or just not bothering....
And tax and insure it correctly ;)
lol
looking good mate,
cant wait to see the finshed peice!
keep up the good work!!
just bin through all 59 pages
cant wait to see it finished

ooo yep, thanks for reminding me mikester, really wanted to be reminded of that! :D :D
will be lots of trouble around ed38, but i dont think i will make it anyway. but yeah, got to send off the v5c about the changes to color and engine size. yeah needs tax anyway, so will make sure i get that right. just going to pay the premium on my current insurance as it ends in november, then go with adrian flux or similar for my renewal.
What are you doing with the clutch? What parts are you using?
Some part numbers for you......
Seat Toledo ABF clutch cable for cable-change 'box with cable clutch: 1L0721335G
Tensioning bracket to hold the end of the cable outer from B3 Passat: 357199356
Cable from early B3 Passat to provide mechanical speedo drive: 358957803G

bit of an update:
i turned it over last night and it sounded smooth. just need to FULLY charge the battery and grab a couple more bits to finish it. need a piece of 2.5" id pipe to join the exhaust to the downpipe, if i can find some. also need a bracket for the clutch cable and a little piece for the throttle cable. but all the boost piping is sorted, and everything else seems good.
also need a new nearside front caliper cause the bleed nipple broke (couldnt be helped), and need to look at the gear linkage, as the stick seems to not select gears well, dont think its the box, but i got a spare g60 box incase.

i got a cambelt, thought it would be worth doing, but came up with that idea AFTER i put the engine in :D should be fun......
then go legite and get it on the road wooooohhhooooo!
what year Mr Hell :shocked:
I can see him ripping those off, I've seen the speed bumps he goes by.
Those bumps I went over when I came to see you were pretty epic lol, your face was priceless!
"how is he making it over these!!!" haha!

LOL! "not a chance your making it over these speedbumps!"
I would be tempted to put soemthing over the lowest part/bend of those pipes, as it would tear a hole in them easy.
Plus if it dont make a hole it would just push on them upwards, which wont be good. lol
pretty much done now, just need to get in an auto sparky to finish it off.

Eh? I thought these QPong looms just bolted right up?
ohh and i talked to my m8 and he said the cable shift mech for the 02a box has adjustment and thats probs why it wont select properly. Anyone know how to adjust it?
12v is low.
Sure the battery is OK?
+1 might be worth trying a new battery.

I think the adjustment is on the shift tower on the gearbox - there are slots in where the cables bolt down.
Is it not......
:lipsrsealed:
So is this running and driving then?
So is this running and driving then?
Do you not bother reading previous posts?
yo peeps, long time no speak!
mot this week, thing sounds awesome, runs sweet. ohh and havent driven it yet lol, still waiting on my throttle cable bracket and another bit for it to improve it.
fixed the smoking dash thing and not starting issue, the engine earth was just sh!t, so put a really thick, decent cable in and its fine. havent been able to sort the dash and clocks issue, but got a cat 2 going on soon, so will get them to look at it then.
other than that, needs a few tweeks here and there, clutch cable fouling the wiper mech and stuff like that, but its almost ready to roll haha.
insurance is sorted through adrian flux, came to a deal of £1780 TPFT, with breakdown, all the mumbo jumbo protection, legal, personal, etc. tax dont know yet, sending off the v5 this week about the changes.
btw, cheers gor131-x thats what the 63 pages are for, reference and good reading lol. was another load of pages, not sure how many, 40+ maybe that went missing when the site went down, would have you going til sunrise lol. got a few pics, but i havent been a$$ed to get on this site, let alone upload pics :D not promising anything, but will try and get some up while at work.
DH - shhhhhh, dont say a word! :D
Think the lowest part of the car has to be 3inchs from the ground in the eyes of the law?
Although dont quote me on that, not that it matters at all

I thought as long as its not on the bump stops it legal in the eyes of the law.
Good luck with the mot.
I seem to recall that much later shift mechs bolt right up - you'll need the tower shifter, mech and cables, then unbolt your tower etc and drop the newer one straight in.
This would come out of something like a 1.6 or 2.0 petrol Golf, Octavia or Ibiza with a 5 speed box, obviously. Do a sanity check on the cable length and eyeball the shifter - there are some pretty sexy looking shifters under the trim in later cars.

Hi all,
I'm in deep water here, not sure what to do. I want to lower my car 40/40 but not sure if it is possible to do myself?!?!
Can I just buy a hottuning lowering kit and fit it myself or is it harder?
Awesome news
Need pics...
Well done fella :afro:
Nice sleeper apart from the intercooler.
Screw those pics - where are the money shots? Under the bonnet and other technical details!
When are you getting the alignment done?

Quality post! Thats what its all about, getting in there and having a go yourself. I've been keeping an eye on this thread but haven't posted yet so congratulations on what you've done so far. :afro:
its funny when i think back when i first got my car (over 2 years ago!), and what i knew about it then and how much i know now. im so glad now i did the conversion, all the money spent, time put in to it, etc, all seem worth while.
i have not read this since your car was red with a 1.4 engine! well f**king done boyo!!! looks sick!
like it mate, will be great when you gwt the front bumper thing sorted

Im not a fan of how it looks but im sure il b a fan of how it goes. I hope to see it in the flesh sometime!

Woop woop!
Can I now take shady's title?
what the spesials one
I can't help thinking that the front end looks a bit odd. The whole car's blacked out yet it still has the chrome badge and non gti grill :undecided: sorry dude, think the gti 2 slat grill would look better with a black badge.

the car is in a strange stage atm, kinda doing watever to it, its having a "i dont what i look like" type of look.
the bonnet is getting more tape as soon as i get some more.
as for the front end, it will be looked at, need to sort the intercooler/bumper/splitter out and yes a gti grill and badge is probs in order. a red badge is more likely than a black one, will tie in better with my next idea :) :lipsrsealed:
anyway, the whole car needs a rethink in terms of looks. new rims, new paint, new front end and a good tidy up, especially in the bay.
cheers peeps :afro:
When that gets hot, the glue on the tapes going to melt and it'll fall off.
When that gets hot, the glue on the tapes going to melt and it'll fall off.
Better for the even rattier look then. Ha! LL you need to cover the WHOLE bonnet, that'll look sweet!
oh might have just found some new rims. wide, stretched rubber and dish
oh might have just found some new rims. wide, stretched rubber and dish
I like the sound of this...
ok, might grab some more safety tape later lol.
but i think the all black, subtle look is going. going to try orange indicators, with my hella red rears and get some yellow headlight tint. oh and a red badge with the safety bonnet.
going crazy for now, doing watever to it. stickers to come!
sometime this year it will get refined and i really want to respray it back to original flash red and spend my days polishing :D
That's what insurance is for.

White centres and for now a matt black dish :)
Dislike.Disagree
Old school rims like Borbets and Azev A's look the shizzle on mk2 and Mk3's...after that not too sure...maybe schmidts on mk4 but anything new looks dumb other BBS
will be running 9's all round, but might have to look out for some 7.5 or see if anyone wants to swap :) depends how bad the fronts are

no, 7.5inch borbets look shocking.
almost as bad as my old staggered brocks (not sure what i was thinking :lipsrsealed: )
You should see 30 mpg + as you say, although this does depend on the type of driving you do - lots of short trips/cold starts and driving in town will reduce this significantly.
Using the lambda probe should improve things significantly since the ECU uses it to build up a map of the most efficient fuelling for your engine. You need a 4 pin narrow band one from transversely mounted 1.8T - it's the post cat sensor from any non-AGU code engine and the only sensor on the AGU.
sometimes you gotta throw the book out the window
sometimes you gotta throw the book out the window
The problem occurs when you forget to wind down the window and end up with the book bouncing off the glass and tw@tting you in the face.

Shiiit! Least its sorted though!
When are the wheels arriving bud?
Ah awesome
'Finished' off the bonnet yet?
To Do List:
afr gauge
sort bonnet out so it closes
oil pressure switch
coolant temp sensor
thermostat
cambelt
"Other less important things" to-do list:
shift mech
front offside wheel bearing
fresh oil and coolant
boost gauge
leccy windows/mirrors with gti door cards
front end/fmic mounting
bonnet lifters
sort out roof gutters
respray?
oh and looked at the wheel bearing and it turns out the hub nut was slowly coming lose. i tightened it up as much as i could by hand, but will grab a scaf bar or get a garage to air gun it tight, dont want it coming loose again! :D
next - shift mech, oil pressure switch and coolant temp sensor.

I might be wrong but overtightening it will damage it as you could crush the bearing.
told you it all looked low
Hope you have not damaged it
read parts of the thread so sorry if i ask anything thats already been covered!
but just wondering on what your BHP is and how much the conversion has cost you? also fuel bills etc , cost much to keep filling her?
sounding not all too bad then really and if you can do 30+ mpg then cool on a car that quick!
would love to do this to mine in the future as the shell on mine is mint with it only being 62k on clock! plus to surprise people that its not your normal mk3 golf gti when you put your foot down!
Random texts are fun. :lipsrsealed:
Hopefully it'll all get sorted today man, and make sure to keep drinking water, don't dehydrate with all the work haha!
I hate you!! Deffo need pics...

You looked into wavetrac?
they are good quality, except you need to replace some washers before you use it otherwise it will fail or something.

Doesn't sound quite right.........
Love the look of those Borbets
Getting mine soon....Aaaaahhhhh, I can't wait
f**k! Those rims are so sweet mate! Looks so much better now. I'd leave them like that rather than painting them personally
Keep 'em as they are Mate, looks really good
You keeping with the black when respray time comes around ??
By the time you've bu99ered about with the bolts and paid the shipping and duty you might as well go for a Quaife.
See 'sounds just like a Golf' adverts for further details.
just popping in to say like the rims dude, top one, nice one, sorted.. haha
Well, what an improvement the new box has made!! drives so much better now. it should even better once i get the tracking done and some decent tyres on the front.
i've got a quaife diff (not that it's fitted yet) but i garauntee that it will be the best money i've spent on the car so far :) i'm sure i'll see great benefits :)

does it not piss you off not being able to do 60 in 2nd?
Just went through all f*cking 90 pages of your thread, and I gotta say respecttttttttt
It's unbelievable how you transformed your 1.4 crappy red metal box to a 20vT matt black Borbet monster :D
The engine conversion, the spraying...Seriously, one of the best threads in this forum.
sh!t hot work mate
Were you running Rota Slipstreams at one point?
What are you planning with the front bumper?
As atm you dont have the bottom of it or the splitter, if you could some how make it so the cooler fitted behind a standard bumper from the front it would look much more of a sleeper and more mean i think.
fail for the stickers and bald rubber on the front
was kind of liking the matt black and also the original pics of it in red, would have been good to still look like that with the engine in tho
I think it's quite cool considering. Looking forward to seeing it on Saturday.
WTF? :D
Matt black was sexy, you should leave it as it is
You HAVE had the wheel allignment done, haven't you?
slicks on the front. lol

but at least kirk aint running the risk of (at least) 3 points! and the possibility of killing someone...
debatable...
Doubtful's spelled with a single 'l', you moron.
As Kirk has illegally fitted HIDs which are probably suffering from beam scatter as the light units they're fitted in are not designed for HIDs there's a strong possibility of him dazzling oncoming motorists.
He's just as likely to be causing accidents.
Now jog on with your illegal modifications and stretched tyres.
LL has put a lot of time and effort into this and is amazing with the outcome he has achieved.
Is that much loss between the engine and wheels normal for that set up?
Bit better than the orignal engine :)

Really?? :undecided: Couple of times I've run on R-Tech's RR and I've seen losses of less than 20bhp
Or is it just a feature of the TSR RR?
Anyhoo - good effort

cheers bud. i will be at r-tech on the 29th august, so we'll see what happens there too.
TSR did have to spray the wheels/rollers with some sort of belt grease or something.... dont know if that would cause a slight loss at the wheels...
yeah, its 1.4 on the v5 now as i sent off the v5 to the dvla, but they need a headed paper from a garage to confirm the change to the engine code and engine capacity, so they told me to resend the new v5 with the headed paper then its all sorted :)
out of interest did the insurance ask for engine serial numbers lazy?
so when is it going to be changed from a 1.4 then?out of interest did the insurance ask for engine serial numbers lazy?
no, they just asked for there money!!! :D
it went really smooth, one phone call and just told him all about it.
Been insured on it since Dec 5th 2009 ;)

Not sure on the bonnet. :undecided:
Love those wheels Mate :afro:
Really suit the car
Change those white fog blanks to the smoked/black ones - it's gonna look niiiiiice :)
Looks awesome  The bonnet looks better in the light than it did in the older pictures. Looks mean
insurance will be on the database now :)
adrian flux had the correct reg but the insurance company (ensign) had it as URF no UFR. donkeys!
Got written confirmation from the VW confirming engine number and capacity, so will send that off with the V5 asap.

looking very nice fella...all running well still?
What are you thinking of doing with the bottom of the intercooler...you gonna leave it poking out?
Bloody hell mate, I'm liking it again lol
sounds a good future plan for it though!
Bonnet :afro:
LL, you got the rust showing through I take it? dunno if you thought of this, but what about transparent vinyl and then the white squares...that way the rust won't change in colour, as it will just ultimately go orange??
Get some nice daylight close ups
+1 iv actually enjoyed reading this thread so far and for a 17 yr old lad i must agree that you have done a top job so far (doesnt look a chav mobile) ignore the lame insults from lame men like dh mate and keep up the top work, im yet to carry on reading through so will leave a final comment on page 100 :laugh:It's still a 1.4
It's still Barryboys.co.uk fodder.
It's still proof you can't polish a turd.
It's still entertaining watching you continue try polishing it though.
As you were.
You're still a dick.
LL's car still looks 20x better than your sh!tty syncro.
I still wouldn't want you banned - it's entertaining watching a fully grown man b!tch over the internet. LOL.

mick, he's not 17 anymore.
LL looks much better with the bonnet like that. And loving the idea of it being sprayed R32 blue, that'll look the nuts! I hope you're getting it done properly though?
How deep is your intercooler LL? Have you deleted you AC or moved back your radiator for space yet?
wa was it ?
Good old magic hands
Spray some WD or like that at your connections , might prevent it for next time
also try your ECU plus for dampness ,but hey , its workin again

yeah probs, will cut out a few and see how the strength of it is. i will start from the middle and work out me thinks.
Aren't the Bars removable anyway? I'm pretty sure that if i pulled on mine they moved about. Can't remember if that was the mk3 or mk2 though.

What's with the gay US plate on the sunvisor?
you should cut away some of the bumper to allow more air to the intercooler, better reliability, performance and it shows it off nicely
ah right, my apologies then.
Looks a fine machine of beauty and power dude!

Dude I haven't been on here for a while and I've just found this thread (you were in the process of changing the engine when I last read it).
Your car is absolutely ace and this thread tells a brilliant story.
Awesome!
^^ sure does!
out of interest mate, how much are you looking at paying for a respray??
It's gonna look absolutely wicked once the bodywork and paint are done. :afro:
One suggestion would try and find smoked Hellas? Just my opinion but they looks loads better.

You have told me LL, on the phone :)
he is dreaming about you again LL  I would be worried.
and why paint it ?
Why not be brave / different and think outside the box for the colour.
Because DPb will look amazing!
Get a Photoshop done lol
the only way I can ever say for sure!!
I haven't seen it work on a mk3 yet. It just doesn't sit right. It has the problem of making you at the paint and not the car.Why not be brave / different and think outside the box for the colour.
Because DPb will look amazing!
I don't think it works on a mk3.
MATT BLACK done properly FTW on this car
the r32 blue will run risk of looking chav on a mk 3

very valid pal but didnt he put up a post asking for help re the colour
sorry i should have not mentioned matt black, but i just think that would look really good
Leave it like that.
Your going to get lots of problems driving around with primer showing, it will soak up moisture and give you problems with paint finish.Looks cool like that, but wayne has a point, leave it like that and get it lacquered!

Awesome project, come quite a way, amazing skills. R32 blue please. Or porcelain blue.
One thing, I'm thinking of getting Borbet A's, if I got good condition 7.5"s would you be interested in swapping a couple?
I would swap the fronts for 7.5s and tuck them nicely and leave a touch of poke on te rear. Too much tyre stickin out looks gay!
My 2p
16x9 all round ftw.
PM?
He did man, im having an emotional breakdown due to this at the moment!!!
I take it your sill not running a knock sensor.
I take it your sill not running a knock sensor.
never was, never will be.
Coilpack failure is common as fook on 1.8T's, easy fix!
Have you actually done any diagnosis on this, or just arrived at a decision based on chin stroking and barstool philosophy?
glad ya got it sorted mate... was getting worried for ya, lol!!
:D
Whens this respray happening dude??
Whens this respray happening dude??
as soon as i get the prep work done :D
im going to the bodyshop tomorrow to hopefully finish off the car. last two weekends i havent been able to go there, first weekend - they werent there and second, i had a dead coilpack.
if all goes well tomorrow, the next time i go there i should be for a whole day stripping it down and doing the final prep work so it can go in for primer. then it will stay there until i go back and flat the primer ready for paint!
dont think it will be ready for rtts or plymouth volksfest, but hopefully not too long after that!
Hey, can I ask, when you did all these mods at 17, how'd it affect your insurance?
OK! So i was going to get the prep work done by working on it on all day monday but after like 10-20mins i got pi$$ed off with it all and decided i hate filler, sand paper and im never doing body work again!!! :D :D :D
So on the phone it was and its now being handed over to Dom at T&D Bodyworks this week to get the prep work finished. If all goes well, I will drive it over to the spray shop on saturday and strip it down ready for primer and paint :)
Wheels will be coming off this week for a refurb too! Spenny and Dre can work there magic on them, so hopefully after these next couple weeks it should be a new car!
Apart from the above, purchases this month will include strut braces i reckon and a 4 wheel laser alignment (again and again!!!) trying to find somewhere that will actually do it right! I want my rear wheels to be straight!!!
More updates this week :)

Apart from the above, purchases this month will include strut braces i reckon and a 4 wheel laser alignment (again and again!!!) trying to find somewhere that will actually do it right! I want my rear wheels to be straight!!!
More updates this week :)
It is not adjustable so maybe your beam is bent.
That car looks totally awesome.
Do you get the matt black look by painting & not cutting & polishing?
Also, how do you get the euro look with the wheels? I assume you get a smaller width tyre so the rubber spreads out to fill the rim?
Great stuff.
So car is down at the bodyshop til tomorrow, so cant wait to get it back!
i did drop the rear tyre pressures to 26psi and upped the fronts to 34psi. Made a difference to its stability, especially when letting off. So its strut braces next to reduce the chassis flex and i reckon it should handle a lot better.
Wayne - the guy at the body shop reckoned the rear beam bolts into the same place no matter what, so there might be play when the bolts are loose, but when you tighten the bolts it goes into the same place regardless of where you moved it when the bolts were loose. I dont know if this is correct....
a friend of mine said he straighten his up by loosening the bolts and moving it that little bit and it made all the difference to how it felt to drive.... :undecided:
We'll see how it goes when the strut braces are in place.

Yep spot on, your beam or stub axle might be bent.
34 is a bit high for the front tyre pressures, 32 is about as I high as I would go to be honest.
Does not take much to bend a rear beam sliding into a curb hard enough will do it
nice work!
ya got standard lights back on now or just a temporary thing?!
Looking forward to seeing this painted, looks sweet :afro:
Dan
cheers guys, its all down to monday and a phone call to the sprayers to see if i can pop over after work in the evening and get it striped down and do any final prep work before primer.
wayne - mmmm, might pop back to the tyre place and see if they can do me a deal seeing as i have had it aligned a gzillion times there! i think standard its at -0.23 (ish) but i reckon -0.8 or -1.0 would do the trick without wearing the tyres too much, just to tuck it in and match the rear.
I reckon getting the stance right will be the hardest job yet!

Trust me it is better than trying to sort it with a camber gauge.

i know for a fact that my alignment needs to be SPOT ON. If is out by just a little, it makes all the difference! Guess it can be handy to have if you swap the suspension over a lot or take the car apart a lot, would mean you could get it roughly right for when you drive to the alignment place.
looking forward to seeing it sprayed mate, are ya going to be fitting gti side skirts?
I would not fit side skirts, they look better without.
I would not fit side skirts, they look better without.
shady's looks very nice with the skirts fitted though :undecided:
i'm in two minds cause i dont want them on as i want it look as clean as possible, but i think they will tidy the car up nicely....
Still planning on the R32 blue?
Nah just leave them off fella. Don't like colour coded arches or skirts...needs something to break the colour ESP on the older dubs. Just my opinion tho,, either way the car is getting there...blue for colour :afro:
Think it was Mikester that had no sill covers just shiney smooth paint. Looked awesome.

Nope standard they are like Mikesters, mine were underneath the covers.
just called the sprayers to check and its sprayed just getting top coat and lacquer now! other parts like bumpers, grill, bonnet, etc will be sprayed monday.
wheels are at the polishers, so hopefully have it all back and together and wheels polished and sprayed by next weekend!
ohh yeah, i cant wait! i might have the work van back tomoro, so i could pop over for a sneaky look! I really hope they have done a good job; i will literally break down in tears otherwise :D
i have thought about how it will look soo much and its takes ages, so im bored of it already
cant wait to give it its first detail session! will be a first for me too, so will have to get myself in the detailing section.

R32 blue? Gonna look sweet as fook on thse borbets
Aye the paintshop has been a bit lazy, looks different to R32 blue in them pics but im really looking forward to the final result, will be like a new car bet your buzzing
ahh i see, well you cant argue really mate, colour could be pics, its very hard to tell the true shade in the pics aint it.
will look tops, did they just mask round the tailgate glass and front screen then do you know? finish looks good on the panels anyhow
A lot of cost with respraying comes in removing the parts etc.
Most of the cost of my respray was labour as every window, seal part was removed. Also the interior was taken out before painting etc. Cost of paint is relativly cheap and dont take long to paint compared to days and days of prep.
All in all it looks like a pretty good job and if you are getting it for nothing or next too then cant complain!
I paid a reasonable amount for mine!
Think paint for my respray came to about £350 including primers etc.
erm no, cos you just posted that  half a story shody
Shady, you're a c*nt.
No knock sensor?
still at work. going to give it a light rinse in a bit while my machine is cutting (yeah thats right the car is sh!t high), then should be able to see what the finish is like and hope that its not as bad as I first thought
I think its a mix between an amateur/rushed job and me wanting show-winning paint! I did have very very high hopes and was expecting it to be superb and flawless. *Reality check needed* :D
Looks like they haven't buffed/polished it correctly in places and there are a couple bodged-looking patches.

Off on holiday again! Lucky fatherless son  Have a good'un!
looking good with the new paint, loose the quad lights though!
not a fan of the quads in that colour but it looks mega smart now!
ya happy with it then yeah?
hows the engine getting on now, no more problems?? still making ya grin or is the power becoming not enough again :D
Alex when your back from holiday let me know when/if your still going down the SPAX RSX Coilovers route as i would love to see them on your car. As i want to go down that way too as i will be running almost the same setup as you wheel base wise. I'm just worried that 65mm drop wont be enough for me! Already have a 65/60 set up with the SPAX PSX Kit i'm running, fronts too low and back is too high!

i might be but like you im not sure if the lows will be enough.... might go for something a little cheaper as i looked into adjustable coilies and some people say its hard to get the setup right and yours always playing around with it... im thinking for what i will use them for aka fast road, expensive coilies just buy you scene points...
my car isnt for the track, its a daily that i can have a little bit of fun for, but i want stance, so i dont think 65mm is enough lows.... will save some money and look around and see what i can get.
looks like they might be the ones. i was looking around that price tbh, so maybe ask around now and see if anyone wants to spoil me for xmas :D
i got a plan b though; save. :D

I'm going to also find out from the Vr6 OC boys what they think of the two and if they can recommend anything better. I doubt it so i think i will be going for them also in a coupld of months!
sounds cool mate, just a little bit lower and wider and itll be awesome!!
have to say after having a go in a tt im stuck over what engine conversion to do meself! vr or 20vt? lol
did you have to sort engine mounts etc with yours...?
(need to have another read through the whole thread again as i cant remember most of it :D too many things keep changing!)
If I ever do an engine conversion, a 210 or 225 S3/TT engine will be dropped in my 16v.
Nice colour.
Thinking about R32 blue for my estate.
I think it would set off the beige and brown interior nicely.
As for DH's comments, I actually think they make the thread better.
A bit like putting chilli sauce on a kebab.
Anyway - car looks mint, great job!
sounds good mate!
got your work cut out then :D
wanna do my pillars in black so may ask you how you did all yours!
think im gonna go for a real oem kinda look on mine now!
your will be awesome soon, i can feel it!!

It will look loads better with more lows and the wheels sprayed and, ermmm wrapped :lipsrsealed:
See how time goes and if I can be a$$ed or not, might do my pillars and headlining. Had an idea for my car for a while and I think it might work, there will be haters but that's what you get for being different.
Looks a lot better in those pics

Dan
Looking good.
Holy mother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!nah he just transfered the plates
I've been away from this site, buying an Alfa, breaking down, selling an Alfa, then buying an old Scirocco  Then I logon properly for the first time in a year and click on Dub Rides, 'Isn't that the guy who used to have caution tape on his car?'... Wait a minute, is that the same car??? HOLY CRAP!!!!!!
Massive respect
Wow.... Nothing else to say!!

I see what Chuff means, where is the bodging?
I think you should go for the lows next!
What does the engine bay look like? Does that need a tidy up?
Are those the rear lights you were talking to me about? if so, look :afro:
Pinnnnnnnnnnnnnnk, doooo it :D! i'm with plan 1!
Dan
Pinnnnnnnnnnnnnnk, doooo it :D! i'm with plan 1!
Dan
Mmmm, I do like plan 1. I feel its a military style name, like Project Bay (wow check out my imagination!).
Defo going to be pink in there. I want pink, white and R32 Blue in there. I'm pretty sure I know what I want to be which colors. Maybe some black in there too. Rocker cover is going to be pink me thinks.
If this is going to be done properly the car needs to come off the road and the engine needs to come out. Time to find a garage and a spare car!
Should have the leccy windows/mirrors in soon!
Debating on whether to take the engine out over the winter (insurance runs out beginning of December, so around then) and tidy the bay to the extreme; smooth it, spray it, clean up the engine, etc. Also would fit a new tdi box and replace all the hoses, re-routing it all, powder coat the boost piping, etc. Generally mint the bay
......or just tidy the bay up a little now. So spray inlet manifold and rocker cover, tidy the wiring, give as best a clean I can and attack the above at a later date.
I'm more for the first plan, maybe get it off the road earlier as I will probably start itching and get impatient!
Other problem is what colors? .....I'm thinking black, white, or something lairy like pink....

Arghh, pink wheels?!?!?
Arghh, pink wheels?!?!?
You really want some pink!
Why don't you colour code the centres and leave the lips polished? Or go pink centres and polsihed lips?
In the engine bay pop some pink stickers in there too?
I never understood MEN, who like pink color...
LL, white and blue would be nice ;)
Be nice to see whats going on under the bonnet, before and afters!..... I hope you get your boost prob sorted... oh and the candy red does look like a good colour for your blue. my 2 pence worth.

Candy red is a pretty awesome color.
I will make sure I get piccies of everything!
Cheers.
Haha, how about a vid of my car running with the ignition off and my keys in my hand. Its a good job I love wiring!
575mm ish :)
some say well just sell and get a gti, but i have got attached to it sort of. i guess when you work it so much, you want to complete the project.
looking at all engines, if time and money allow, then 1.8t is going in. need to think about it, but you can pick up a 8v engine very cheap, abf 16v are a little more expensive as are a vr.
pm sent shady.
LL ;)
You nostalgic fool.
Shame its off the road and f**ked. Just because its been on the road for like 8 months, doesn't mean your in the clear, things can still go wrong!
I'm sorry guys it's because I'm socially inept & have nothing better to do than slag off people over the internet whilst I'm sat at home contemplating how I wasted my life.

Sweet :) can't wait to see it in the flesh some day man!
Problem pics to follow! Its stood out more wen it looked ratty, now it stands even more because of the paint, bodywork and rims. Will stand out even more when its lower and the wheels are sprayed. Going to the rims myself, just needs a trip to the paintshop to get crazy color mixed up. Mmmmm, what you think Danny!?!? Hahaha, oh yeah  I just can't resist!
Cheers Chris, I'm sticking at it, never going to give up.
Ditto Dan and SoundIllusion, would be great to your cars in the flesh and meet you guy; and ladies of course.

:D Mad colours ftw, i think Candy red / green would suit it, but i guess its all down to personal opinion, saw a candy pink on Big Fat Tour and it looked awsomeeee ;)
So its my break at work and the car is sat in front of me at work inside. The spray shop guy popped in to say high just now too and asked when I'm bringing the wheels up. I said tomorrow :D along with mirrors. Just need to decide a color for the wheels.tomorrow and you still havent picked a colour!!!!
Anyway, I'm spending the rest of my break taking the borbets off.
That looks sweet!!! I would say white, but that's because it's me!! or illuminous yellow! :lipsrsealed: :grin:yeah white would work but yellow agains that blue!....... noooooooooooooo!
Quite a few colors work, will talk to sprayer tomorrow about it. Pink, green, red... That candy pearl red is sweet though...
This is a very hard decision! I'm moving away from pink and more to something f##king sweet. It those pics of candy pearl red!

I think its a done deal now! Lol!
Mirrors are off, wheels are off and hopefully get an auto-electrician in this week to help with the wiring, then tidy up the wiring and maybe spruce up the bay a little.
Get the coilies off, try and unseize them, spruce them up, then get more lows.
That's the plan anyway :D
Auto electrician... not cheap... glad you're swaying towards the candy.
Luckily, its someone I know from work, so he's going to help me out, he's just mega busy.mmmm candy!... is that a hint! have you done something!?
Mmm, candy.
Looking good, but instead of sending the wheels to the sprayers you wanna send them to me?
nice workshop LL, almost as big as mine

you get some coloured conduit and self-amalgamating tape :afro:
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Performance-Parts-Ltd__W0QQ_sidZ696116039?_nkw=conduit&submit=Search
also you could get some colour coded cable ties  i found orange ones on ebay for instance
sounds like a mission mate, good luck!
the last thing you want is dodgy electrics, sparks (can) cause fires ...
I replaced the complete inner steering column on mine as it was easier than replacing the ignition switch
Thanks guys. Yeah exciting times. Will be ordering some new coilies this week and getting some stainless rings made up and copper grease them up before fitting.
While I'm waiting, I'll prep the bay and plan that out better, wire in and fit the boost gauge and wack on my new tdi driveshafts.
More updates to follow!
I might be wrong but stainless rings on alloy might not be a good combo
New coilies on the way and all new VR top mounts. Should be ordering the hoses for bay later on. Woop woop!

Lol, its all good. "Wayne" said its fine. That's like "rubjonny" saying it fine :D
Waiting for the wheels, mirrors, cam cover, inlet manifold and throttle body (which has now been welded) to be sprayed.....
Waiting for boost pipes to be tidied, welded and powder coated.....
Waiting for my coilies and top mounts to arrive.....
Waiting for my new hosing and piping to arrive.....
Need to source drivers door window switch and regulator, tailgate lifters, catch can and a few others bits. Glue for headliner, steering wheel boss and adaptor.
Mates coming up later to measure up a sump guard
Cheers! Me too!
As I post this on my phone, the courier is walking over with my new coilies! Top mounts arrived earlier! Yeaaahhh buddy!
Tomorrow is the big one, late night, fast food and lots getting done on the car. Can't wait!
Don't bother with copperslip / grease, waxoil ftw.
That made me happy
Am I right in thinking just spray on some engine de-greaser and then hose off to remove it? Then bit of WD40 and they should be good to go? Then just re-protect afterwards?

Yep, waxoil is all I have ever used.

Sweet deal, yer will have my laptop, so will posting as I work probs lol.
When you coming to plymouth?!? Defo gotta stop in!
Do I buy the spray version? Dismantle the coilover and coat the thread, then put it all back together, set height and fit them to the car?

Pretty sure I remember him saying he took the covering off those wires to try and sort the ignition/gauges problems :)
Try calling your local college.
They always need cars for their students to practice on so they do resprays for free and they're usually a better quality than at body shops because they're marked.
I had my Mk1 done in Lhasa Green by students and it looked mint.
Yo, no worries bud. Stickers were a sorry for taking a million years to sort it out :D
Dude, I'm sure you already paid me?!?
Big update coming up soon, wheels are sprayed and so are a few engine parts. Putting it all back together tomorrow, so can't wait!

Money will be in your account FIRST thing tomorrow morning!
Looking forward to these updates!
ignition switch is sorted and hopefully securing the turbo intake and replacing a split breather should sort the running problem.
Pics coming later!
Jamie - Aite, will check paypal, I'm still sure you paid me lol.
I've just seen the update for this :lipsrsealed: looks shweeeet!

YES LL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :afro:
I f**king hate pink.
I totally want some pink alloys one day.
Looks AMAZING and somehow not tacky.
f**k you for fulfilling my R32 Blue MK3 dream.
Nice placement of the boost gauge... outside is looking spot on now, bet you cant wait to start cruising in it again.. hope your leccy's dont give you anymore jip!
yeah i'm hoping my fresh electrics will behave themselves!.... I'm lucky, mk1s have gauge spaces but the VDO's were removed in the 90s by previous owner and blanked off for the alarm proximty sensor adjusters! Ive put it back to normal and intend to use them again.Nice placement of the boost gauge... outside is looking spot on now, bet you cant wait to start cruising in it again.. hope your leccy's dont give you anymore jip!
Well the electric's starting playing up, cause I was a douche and school boy error'd it. Hopefully when its fixed I won't have anymore problem's with it, all the wiring is tucked away now, so I can't do it again :D
Yer, didn't really want any extra gauges, cause there isn't a lot of places to put them without adding a pod. So I stuck it there, might paint it black, but will see.
Damn right! Can't wait to get back in it again!!!
Mmm yeah it was difficult, its held there cause its a tight fit! Lol! There wasn't a blanking plate, just the airbag warning light.
The dash is in the way really, but I didn't want it anywhere else.
haha, yeah you'd think so rob? That's why its taken ages, always waiting for funds!
Its almost on the road. I went to drive it today and a cv joint had popped out, so couldn't drive it. Must of happened when I changed the coilies. Got a set of tdi shafts waiting to go on, so will swap them over this week.

I wanted to kill myself trying to swap my driveshafts over :D everything just kept popping out and going wrong, good luck :afro:
Dan
Oh yeah just noticed that in your sig
do it, and if its cheaper i might be interested. :wink:Oh yeah just noticed that in your sig
:) Might have a tinker with pricing and bring out a smaller size. Its really good stuff, better than lamin-x ;)
Cheers bud. Maybe have a play with pink badge and mirrors.
Yellow lamps are just showing what I'm now selling, just testing them out for myself. I love them!

Looking awesome mate :afro:
Like the others can't help thinking the mirrors would look better pink :undecided:
Also with regards to the film what kind of tint are you developing? Dark or light?? Was gonna buy some lamin-x to do my headlights soon, but obviously would rather give my trade to you instead
That looks fcukin epic
I need to spend a little longer with the wing mirrors keep thinking pink would have been sweet :undecided:
Are smoked headlamps legal.
dont worry, they'll be legal enough+1 I never got pulled for the victorian candles my white mk1 was running
as long as they dont adversly affect beam pattern or massively reduce light output.
think about mk2 headlights on the standard looms... voltage drop at the headlights isnt illegal
Are smoked headlamps legal.
The law/Mot hand book within the UK states that front primary lighting must produce a White or Yellow light. There is no documentation about the colour of the actual lens.
Our Clear/SubtleTint/GunSmoke/OpticBlue light protection films all produce a legal natural light colour, and our Yellow produces a Yellow tinted light which is of course perfectly legal within the UK.
None of our light protection films change/adjust the beam pattern or cause insufficient light output.
One for Danny:

Haha geddon maaaaate! I don't like the red nor the position. But that's cause I didnt want the red and I asked for it to be positioned somewhere else :D
Oh and no real update, just doing little bits to the car. Lining up up the next load of parts for when payday comes round. New rear pads and handbrake cables + new carrier bolts, guide bolts and caliper bolts. Don't ask :D
Also planning on it going into the body shop soon, serious arch work and a good tidy up of the paintwork. Wheels might get a re-look too.
Other than that, small updates to follow and all dat shiz!

i have the opposite problem.... i have all the parts in my garage but no time to fit them! :lipsrsealed:
Looking sick mate! Love the yellow lamps
Nothing much to update, just a picture of me coming out of my drive:
it is now! :grin:Nothing much to update, just a picture of me coming out of my drive:

Mmm yeah, i think i will replace all the bolts now lol, spend out on some high tensile b*stards.
I wasn't intending on new wings until I realised they weren't pulled out enough!
Wasn't going to take it off the road over winter, I figured there was no sense in going so far with tidying it up, etc. Just means more can go wrong (taking engine out, etc) and more money.
sounds like a busy night. hope all goes well
Going to cut the subframe open tonight, cut off the captive nut, weld in a new nut and weld back on the piece of subframe we took off.
have ya got a pic for the calendar mate??
cant not have yours in there!
Haha, yeah!
Car is welded up and semi back on the road, just waiting on new tyres so i can get them on saturday and get it aligned.
Didnt manage to sort the rear brakes, was no time lol, but that'll be done by saturday.
New coilpacks and plugs fitted, feels better until it comes on boost, then it pops and misfires worse than before.... It only happens under load..

N75. Can you do logs?
how did the old plugs look when they came out?
 your driving it with tyres that low on tread.
Ouch!... is all I can say and how did those tyres get so low!
Nice....
Burnout..... you just couldn't help yourself with new tyres coming could you.
Wing fixed already or old vid?
Pics look great and minus the misfire it sounds spot on... engine quiet, turbo and exhaust not too loud.
Looks awesome man. The 9's up front look so mean  The DPB colour stands out a lot more in the video than the photos imo, very cool  Are you running a Jetex exhaust? I was sort of expecting more noise

Engine bay is looking sweet ... its like the inverted colour of mine
f**k me there's a fair whack changed since i last seen this!
done the flyeye tints yet LL?
Cheers Jamie, should have back on the road properly soon, so will grab a decent video then :)
Tried to get it aligned this week and hit a problem. The steering arms are constantly sat on the ARB. So when I drive and steer, it throws the alignment out everytime. I reckon it must lift the car when I turn!
The ARB is fitted with the droplinks above the subframe. I'm sure the drop links are meant to sit below the subframe? Hint is in the name I guess :D
Either way, I have to get the ARB and droplinks sat below the subframe so I get it aligned. Should feel like a different car!
Pics of the new headlight tint and flyeye:

Hmmm, i'm after quite a dark tint so would this be better than the other film? i'm not overly fussed about brightness but i'd imagine the flyeye film will allow more light through :undecided:

Difficult to say, the flyeye is a different effect. If you want a darker film I can make it darker, its not a problem :)
I use 40% for the average tint, any darker and it seems to really affect light output with standard bulbs any lighter and you don't get a tinted look.
If you want it darker, it can be done :)

Ahh, I see Wayne, nice one. Well I'm going to try and fit it below and see how I get on. Its the only way it can be done.
Dom - no pics on normal lights bud :(

Cannot see it fitting or working below, if they are below you stand the chance of damage.
I would check and see if you have another problem, mine was as low on the front end and I had loads of clearance.
I would check and see if you have another problem, mine was as low on the front end and I had loads of clearance.
The GTi and non GTi models had different ARB's though didn't they?
I didn't have a problem before, but now I have gone that little bit lower the ARB and steering arm touch.
If you fit it underneath you stand a chance of ripping it off.
If you fit it underneath you stand a chance of ripping it off.
Yeah, I'll have to see how low it sits compared everything else.
A lot of tweaking going on since i last looked..... Its like a never ending project (which is good in some ways)..... not sure about the ARB, you'll have to post how it drives with it setup like that???.....
It's OK, I can see mine being the same.... technically i think getting on the road is only going to be the start of it!...A lot of tweaking going on since i last looked..... Yer mate, it is like a never ending project. Now don't get me wrong, its fun but its starting to get old :D Nothing is EVER easy!
Will post up what it's like. Its staying like that, cause the other alternatives are remove it (CBA!) or raise the car and put it like it was (NOT happening!).
:)
 you could use a work van, but yet your chucking miles onto this! You sir shall be stoned to death!
On a serious note, take a look at the start, with your 1.4, lexus lights and matts...then tell me the work wasn't worth it!
I would so have a second car if I could insure 2! Having the use of a work van sounds like luxury
I had a van for a week, best/cheapest week ever!

It is great in some ways, but I really miss my car when I drive the van. I have make my own turbo noises and stuff :(
:D :D :D :D :D

haha, i do that in everything! :lipsrsealed: and tyre noises in bends....
on a serious note though if all goes well with mine i will finally be blessed as I have a daily nowadays.. the mk1 used to be my daily and the ones before it.... used to be a pain at times when something needed doing... The good thing about you driving the van when you can is that your car will feel even more amazing when you drive it!
looking good mate!
dont lose faith now, itas not been easy but certainly worth it!
look forward to the tucked wheels!
now the golf is off the rd, it feels so much better moving it around after driving once a week in the mrs saxo :D
well mine didnt drop as much as what i hoped when i turned 21, but every person is different!
see how ya feel and how much money ya have after various mods :D

I don't think I could just leave it there, plus my car is nicer in the winter. Be good to hear a bit more on what other people have paid when they turned 21, see how much less it was.
Ahhh, stop with the cheap prices! I'm not sure I can wait 5 months! :D
I'll ask for a quote and see what they say.

Another thing - not long now til the hammer and dolly kit comes out! Woop woop!
Can't wait til I'm 21... Shame that my renewal is January and i'm not 21 til August
Hopeful that this will be my last renewal over £1000!!!
Good luck! :afro:
The only thing worth waiting for is the NCB.

just declare the engine swap but as a citroen 2cv coversion... should be well cheap as the 1960's units were like 425cc with 12HP
If it makes u feel better, im now 22 but pay more than £1000. So your not the only one getting hit by the price increases!
I'm with HIC - did come out better than Flux, but then turns out they are underwritten / sister company so so't compete with them I think Danny said when he was on the phone to us
Oh and arches have been abused with a hammer

Lol, wasn't the fuel pump, it was the NEW coil pack's!!! F**king EuroCarParts! OEM VW ftw from now on!!!!
Bolted in a new set of Bosch super 4's and it didn't work. Old coilpacks - thought its the last ditch effort before driving up to see QPeng. It worked lol.
Only problem is now, its cutting out when I hit full throttle. Then it doesn't start, just turn's over. Then if you bump start it after 5 mins, it starts :undecided:

If you want any original vw coilpacks that WORK mate I have 8
All I can say is - F**king EuroCarParts.
Not sure what actually cured the original problem, either the fuel pump or the N75. I fitted the new coilpacks, didn't work and they turned out to be faulty so fitted the old ones and it cured the misfire.
Then I was left with a starting/cutting out problem. Couldn't possibly be the crank sensor as its new.... Well after much diagnosis and no luck and having already lost faith in ECP, we tried the old crank sensor. It worked lol.
So yeah back up and running sweet. Time now to powder coat the rims and start on the interior

Why are you getting a TDI box if you don't mind me asking? Was going to ask the exact same question, I assume because it's stronger and maybe closer ratios?
The BOV is a massive lol. Needs a bit more tweaking, still chatters like f**k :D

I have the next mod which you MUST make to this vehicle.
Since you started this project I've been waiting for you to get a BOV on it and finally you have.
Now you must buy this item (http://cgi.ebay.com/120-VINTAGE-DIME-STORE-PLASTIC-WHIRRING-TOY-WHISTLES-/310268449483?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483d70d2cb&x=30&y=1) and fit one of them to the BOV exhaust.

Like I said - you have no option on this. Tell me which show you're going to tip up at with this and I will personally cheer you in the entrance.
Possibly normally referred to as 'tramlining' due to dumb-f*ck width tyres and wheels.
Mine was doing this because the ball joint on the near side went.
It meant there way loads of play.
In other news, I have been running on V-Power and not Tesco fuel. Only reason I used Tesco 99 was I have 3 Tesco petrol stations close to me and I like the clubcard points. The nearest Shell garage is a bit more of drive. I'm going to try BP super on my next refill and see how that compares. Be interesting to see if the drop in octane makes a HUGE difference. Car is mapped to run on 97...
Tesco may have high octane fuel but it's a sh*t fuel in my opinion.... would never put that dirty sh*t in my car.... I'm sure someone on here did an in depth project on fuel quality and the supermarket stuff was full of grit and all sorts of nasty cr@p.. not very well refined at all compared to the branded stuff.
Cheers buddy. Where were you back then?!?!? Haha, needed your backup lol. Its coming along nicely and like you say, no endless money supply, just that end of month pay check. That's why its taken this long to get where it is now. Well worth it, and cheaper than a real baby I reckon haha.
Windscreen is booked in for tomorrow, so good news! I'll see how I get on with things tonight and I might book an MOT in for Thursday.

42 and a half hours and I hit the sack. Was more of sensible decision come then rather than passing out.
Anyway, in other news, dropping the car off for MOT after work (its being done tomorrow) so fingers crossed!
I lost my phone so no piccies of things, but when I get my replacement, I'll get some pics up of the catch can and new windscreen.
:)

Think I keep it, but not sure. Hopefully get to keep it cause it will be a pain in the f**king a$$!
I'm away skiing again on Thursday (fingers crossed for some snow!!!!), so trying to sort the MOT out and get a new phone before then.
Going to talk to the bodyshop and see if they can take my car in while I'm away. Don't think I'll go overboard on this one, just two new wings. 4 arches flared, tidied and sprayed and a flat back and polish. I know a few places I can go to and get a better deal, so we'll see what each one says. Need the car back tomorrow really with another year's MOT so I can get some quotes on the bodywork, running out of time here!
No8 is strange, are you running a lambda sensor

Yeah got a lambda. Its got a decat though.

Thats why the emissions are high then
I hate emissions. Was at my mates garage working on his Swift GTI a couple of weeks ago and the emissions were at 9 (dont know what they're measured in) and should have been around 3! Tweeked around a bit and got it down to 5 (which is around where it was before changing the pullys and a few other bits) then changed a throttle sensor and they went down to 1.6
Really don't understand how it works, but all the best :) people seem to find emissions tricky to reduce.
Not that bader list though really
Shame the side skirts don't cover the sills up enough :(
My sills on my old mk3 were pretty knackered I think, still got through the MOT though :undecided:
Can you not just cover the sills in waxoil to disguise them? :lipsrsealed:
I agree on the sills, think they were being harsh if they aren't rusty or got holes. I had the same thing with my old vento, they were crushed badly, but they never mentioned it. They wouldn't fail it on a dented wing now would they?
You'l be very lucky if you get it through the emissions without a cat, do they test it on what a car of that age should be producing? Or do they test the emissions on the limit a 1.8t would normally have in its usual home? I know they have different limits for different cars or different age cars. I'l be lucky with my gti powered GL, cuz they don't need a cat and they only test emissions on idle
Straighten the sills out and paint with waxoil or underseal, if you have no holes you should be fine.
Oh btw what days are you staying at the Holiday Inn Express?watch out, rapist about!! :D ;)

Wish i knew where you was getting the £ :( cant wait to see the arches done and looknig forward to a fresh colour on the wheels ;) still unsure on what to do the steelies when their banded, so tempted to go pink again but i'm thinking blue will look pretty fresh!
Not sure if i'm going to make it in feb :( too much work to do and too little £ got £120 tax to pay for at the end of this month on a car that does move :D
Dan

Well I'm usually skint and I spend my money on nothing else. I'm better than I used to be, used to have bank charges like a muthaf**kin phone contract muthaf**ker!
I can't deal with the polish anymore, and I don't even like it when its shiny. Painted dish ftw. It's going to be a rattle can job again, but I'm going to add a twist to it, not 100% sure what yet, but it'll be different.
Bummer, would be great if you could make it, but money is a very valid excuse :D I'm trying to get more peeps to ride with me, pay for the fuel init

Will try and make it to UD, all depends on $$$ :D
What? What you expect me to say?? :D
Yep, same my friend who had a Leon Cupra went diesel cause of the fuel prices. He got a Leon again but the diesel equivalent to the Cupra. Awesome on diesel, think he got like 40mpg, when flat out (***mph) :D
I'm like "Yes, f**king 30mpg!!! Woop woop!!" Then get shot down by others saying how sh!t their car is on fuel, "Booo, I only got 40mpg today."
I'm like "ONLY!!! ONLY 40mpg!!!"
Looks like me and Stu will be doing my arches later, can't get ahold of this dude :( He hammer's them out, no filler work, nice and smooth.

:D same, my mates got a cupra diesel with a de-cat and mapped and it's hitting 220bhp and the torue is insanee! I'm used to sh!t mpg, my 1.4 was running like 15-20 :D it was only running on 3 cylinders and was just generally awful, i'm just not looking forward to driving to newquay in summer and i'm stopping every hour for petrol stops and he mans it out the full way :( and edition.. and UD.. and Vw Fest.. pfft spend more on petrol then on my car!
and yess! this thread has been too long without pictures, sort it out ;)
Dan
Cupra diesels are great. The friend of mine that died in a car crash had one, remapped, air filter and decatted. It too had about 220hp and insane torque, and he used to get 35mph at the very very worst!
It's a shame I didn't try it out, he gave me the chance to shortly before he died but I didn't take it, I told him soon though
I can report they don't handle trees at 120mph+ very well though
You always have to make things difficult for yourself a!?
Good luck on the retest! :afro:
Not your luck this with the car recently is it?!!
Is this called 'projectninetynine' as it's always 99% finished?
lol!
sorry to hear they wouldnt do the mot, shouldnt take em too long though!!!
liking project 99 :D
look forward the the colour change again, lol
:D Projectninetynine sounds about right! Good luck with MOT, i hate cars.

Yeah f**king cars, like women. Both b!tches. Just got to remember, "You f**k a b!tch, don't let a b!tch f**k you"
Anyway! Found some pics on FB of the other night:

Cool mine has 02A box, cable shift and hydralic clutch. if I'm there will be in the caddy, Kirk is a "drop out" and is missing this to do summin he could do any other week of the year  makes me sad.
Undecided if I am going to go to the meet solo.
My spider sense is tingling. See you tomorrow Alex, be good to catch up.Ha Ha you love it

The black mk3 with the R32 lump on page 4 is really nice
Pictures looking sweet  had a sly look, took me a while because we're pretty busy at work but looks like a pretty big meet! ;)
Dan
I've just caught up from about 10 pages back!
Good news on the MOT
Progress on the arches look sweet
Meet looked cool!
And dont winge about money :P My bank have called me in for a 'meeting' to discuss my overdraft limit due to them 'being worried about the amount of interest im paying" :lipsrsealed:
:D i just applied for a credit card on top of my 1k overdraft i'm currently in, if (highly unlikely) they give me one my car will be pretty much finished ;) what i'm trying to say is.. get a credit card :D
Dan
Lol
That's why I'm in so much debt dan!! Dont do it!!
My credit card has been maxed for a year or two now :lipsrsealed:
Im going to listen to what my bank say when I go in for my meeting, probably tell them to do one with whatever 'scheme' they come up with, and then follow a plan that an accountant I know has set out for me. Means being skint for a year, but then I'll be debt free and be able to get a mortgage :smiley:us too, and only paying minimum back atm cos the rest is going on the wedding, i hate being in debt, all for a car i dont own anymore :(
EPIC FAIL Danny, its work on my PC. I thought you were an IT dude? :D
Wheels were going white and I was going to get creative with vinyl.
Then was thinking a fluo color - yellow, green or orange.
Now I've something else in mind. The powder-coating I want done has an effect but the main color can be bought from graff-city. Depending on price of the powder-coating, I might just rattle can them

Dan
Would imagine it being a pain in the arse on the edges / under the lips near tyres and then if dirt got under it and stuff, rattle can still wins in my opinion ;) i wanna see colour!!

:D Just one night, I'll stay after work and get it in and on stands, then prep and spray the wheels and leave them to dry for like 20 hours then bolt them back on. I can do the ball joints at the same time and replace a few of the bolts with new ones. Loctite things, etc.
Hopefully I can grab my interior bits and a standard engine mount this Friday and get that fitted when I do the ball joints.

Would be 8m x 8m level concrete floor, 64 studs (1 every 1/2 metre).
2.4m high with a pitched roof + corrugated.

Yeah well, I got 250 miles from £60 of V-Power! Woop woop! :D
Loan - Bluemotion -
Yeah there's a good scrappy near mine you could take it to?
I'm guessing (with the way you splash money about) you will have this sorted before March?
Thanks for taking us for a spin, what a machine!
The reason i am now in even more love that car is the fact most of the inside is still from the 1.4

and quality...... supermarket fuel, high octane or not is of a poorer quality compared to branded.
Well I don't know, there may be the odd chavmobile driver that will only get V-Power because he can tell his mates it was developed with the help of Ferrari and as a result can make his clio go like a v10. :cool:its all British standard so they are all up to the job just one is for more scene points than the other

That's what i'm saying haha, i meant that i don't think anyone would buy more expensive fuel just to look cool :D
Dan
It all comes out the same hole
I use the cheapest I can find, never had a problem and never noticed a difference in mpg or performance in either this car or my Golf previously.
(my old 16v ran 163.6bhp on tesco 95, should have tried with 99 tesco and shell )
New sig looks fresssssh
New sig looks fresssssh
Cheers mate!
Going to look at getting/ordering glue tomorrow for the abc pillars and other trim. Got new visors and grab handles to spray too. Hopefully crack on with that next week.
I'm going to just paint the headliner, most likely black. Take it out and roller it.
:)

Sweet man, my mate used Copydex and it was spot on :afro: i painted my sun visors in the 'state black, just don't dry them with your lasses hair dryer and make the glue underneath bubble  :D i'm going to try and strip my interior out this weekend can't stand the cream!
Dan
im gonna take a trip to dunelm mill for cheap fabric for the interior in mine, "borrowed" some black leather from work that i found and did the a pillars, looks smart!!
not sure where else to look for fabric thats relatively cheap!
good point!
well i fance a funky head liner, i liked chuffs camo one, but that wouldnt suit!!
thinking some form of black and white pattern!!
If u need a second bod to hold stuff or make tea or whatever, give me a shout as I was looking to do mine and it would be good to see what u do with regard to the type of material. Really don't have a clue with that sort of thing!
I hope there will be a build thread for the shack :D
Yeah that would be great, cheers! Where is yr new shack then? I remember reading a while back that u were thinking of building one. What have u got left to do on it?
Ooh better raise your coilies then! I had a bit a trouble with those pot holes and I'm only at 60mm
Ll, I used evostick on the leatherette material, and it's not too hard!!
I'll get a pix for ya later to see how I got it to stick!!
I got more material this weekend to do my b and c pillars too!
attitude i like!!!!
project wrap begins :D
Love it! Flicks look amazing man
[/quote
Damn straight... car looks awesome and i'm loving the colour choice for the wheels and badges. :afro:
Cracking shots, looks great, how did you take the 2nd shot btw.
hmm is that how you do it..
10k is not good for a clutch, you might have oil leaking onto it from the crankshaft oil seal.

Booo what a pain in the ass, but then if you have new gear you want to put in and you're in a position to do it then now's a good time I suppose, and if Wayne's point is the issue at least you will see then.
£120.
LUK, could probs get it cheaper locally. Might be able to get a Sachs with a bit of discount too. But my current one is Sachs and if it is the clutch that has gone, I'd probably try a different one.

Very stange for a Sachs to have such a short life, both Sachs and LUK are really good choices.
Those SACHS clutches not as good as they supposed to be then!
Fcuk me man, no messing about! :afro:
I bet this will be all back together looking even better by friday!
Whilst you're out hunting, if you come accross some 3dr trim, you know where i am
Alex please bite on my comment
Dude... your crazy! Total dedication there lol!

Looks good but I prefer the borbets if I'm honest lol
I actually prefer the bbs.
With some stretch and some poke, they would look mega.
That wing looks awesome too.
I'm loving the wing, shame it should be [ProjectThirtyThree]
Get the merc wheels on asap!
Oh and you have a PM!
Haha that pic is awesome! Cars looking good considering the recent events dude!
Gutted! live about 30 seconds away from there and the missus decided it would be nice to spend the day in looe. Saw quite a few on the way back though, and some looked really tidy. Seriously need to get myself to the next meet!

whats the deal with all this project 99 stuff?
whats the deal with all this project 99 stuff?
projectninetynine is a new group, just basically a collection of people that love cars and look out for each other, help out when people need help. Like the other night when I broke down the other night! Its about a f**k it attitude to modifying cars; got a crazy idea? Do it.
See how things progress, might be able to call it a club one day!
this is still fast moving looking good mate
Loved the sound of it when you come out last night

Never been keen on that idea, is it really a good idea to advertise what engine you have to low lifes etc.
Is it not illegal to run with no bonnet
Is it not illegal to run with no bonnet
As it happens it's not. "Shakey" on E38 ran one for ages, constantly got pulled but had some documents stating it was actually legal.
Wouldn't have thought it though, hitting your head on a manifold might hurt a bit.

I can see why you prefer the box though, i will for ever name your gear changes "Slam in, slam out!"
Will have to get over and see this again!!
Don't fancy some mint condition heated bora ST front seats do ya? ;)
Cars looking good mate!
I'm 17 and so don't always know whats best :p
finding this site is a good start mate.
have a look on the "show us pics of your mk3" in the mk3 section for some good ideas.
the best thing about having a more basic model is that upgrade parts are usually plentiful due to people breaking GTI's.
keep it subtle.
It's legal to run with no bonnet as long as all moving parts are covered :)

Fooking hell!.... every time I look at this thread something changes colour or the wheels change etc!... will you ever be happy with anything for longer than a couple of weeks!?

most engines these days have belt covers and stuff so i'd say no
Ran out fuel last night. I had a little panic, thought my engine had died. Ended up half on the motorway and half in the grass on the side - epic fail. Highway patrol towed me off the motorway, but wouldn't take me any further. Thought they could take me the extra 1/4 mile to the petrol station!
It was a big lol. I was on the way to the petrol station as well and my needle wasn't sat at 0 so I didn't think it was fuel. Stu got £10 worth of fuel and we chucked that in, then started it and the needle didn't move, so I'm guessing where it was 0 :D
Yeah, didn't think it was that low lol.
Patrol said they couldn't because of insurance reasons, then said Section this, Act that and went on but I had stopped listening :D
It was mega unsafe lol, I was fearing for my car when I saw a f**k off lorry barreling past. They are much quicker when you aren't moving :D
I have only been in this situation once and standing on the other side of the barrier for 30 mins in sub zero temperatures is not fun!
Glad you didn't get ran over though! :afro:
Epic failure for Alex!!!
Glad you didn't get ran over though! :afro:
I'm sure i mentioned something about how low your petrol was back in Portsmouth? Are you one of these that loves to run in the red?
Same, although it wasnt freezing, just rainging heavily and i stupidly was wearing a t shirt and shorts :embarassed:  I figured it was better then getting mushed up if a car hit mine tho
Yeah, didn't think it was that low lol.

Was obviously giving you the riot act on running out of fuel on the motorway then.
Yeah, being stranded on a motorway is not nice and after seeing what can happen when a vehicle driven by someone half asleep veers off into a stranded car ....

April fool yea
6450... if you had said a more realistic price you might have pulled it off
Yeah...
...he really got 8k for it but didn't want to boast.
Bloody hell mate! More drop on the front  Looks like its scraping the deck already
interior remeinds me of my dragon green mk3 gti, camo headlining
that's just stoopid low!
love the interior plans!
Is it weird that i have two pics of your car on my work desk...
Ahhh so it's still alive!! was going to drop you a text to see how things were going with this!
I'm really glad you've got onto the interior as it let the rest of the car down, which was a shame as the outside is fapping awesome!
Loving the addition of more yellow on the lights, something different and really stands out :afro: (Still need foglights/blanks!)
What have you used to wrap the pillars?
Thos wheels made me have a little sex wee....

Still rocking
Had to sorted ASAP, can't wait to get these seats and I'm looking forward to shopping around for material. I got an idea of what I want, although not sure if its got too much "subtle" and not enough "POW!" We'll see.
I like the yellow tint but the front end needs a debadged grill I reckon. Will probs leave the fog blanks out; fooocking air flow init beeey fooocking
Just used some camo fabric I got a few years back off ebay for a couple quid. Worked really well. Used SA-90 industrial spray adhesive to glue it, good sh!t, rated up to 80degreeC.
I'm liking the rims more and more tbh, thinking about a change of color tonight though :D
Like it, bit strange, but I like it :D
Oh yeah its april! Looking at the calender makes me want the borbets like that again!
Color is to be decided, got three colors it could be tbh, maybe 4.
Applying fabric was easy ish, a few bits were tricky but its come out really well, love it.
Might grab some of those vents and spray them, whether I fit them or not is to be decided lol. Smoked blanks ftw tbh.
Do the whole car like you've done the wing, that would =
Very MadMax stylee.
Very MadMax stylee.
That's exactly what I thought.
sorry ll, i loved it in blue
Bit late now but would it have not made more sense to tidy / sort the R32 blue paintwork.
I hate you, one for going to the states all the time and for doing that to your car again..
Though, with that said. I do however have trust in your judgement and expect something big and crazy to come of this.
New engine, or at least some dort of crazy setup. Fresh paint job and some extreme interior makeover!
We will all need to arrange some sort of meet, one that can justify me spending another £300+ and a 10 hour boat trip to get over!
Just out of interest.. Was that a spray or a roller paint job.
Took balls to do that Alex! Respect mate!
Oh does the bumper fit with more than 3 bolts now?
Hate to say it but this was looking great but is fast heading downhill
Took balls to do that Alex! Respect mate!
Oh does the bumper fit with more than 3 bolts now?
Thanks buddy :) and no, its rally stylee. I could put all the bolts in but it doesn't need them all.
I wouldnt say matt black is going crazy, bright pink with green dots all over the shop is crazy.. or 2 engines with 1000bhp Noz, but yeah interesting move. on the fence with it for now till i see more.. good luck

Yea I must go get some extra bolts for mine! I got the 3 on top and 2 below!
With my aftermarket bumper I need the 3 tops to pull it in!
please tell me its a supercharged vr!!!
With the way you work Alex i give you till October and you'll be done!
Management - have a word with Emerald.
What bottom end mods are you planning to cope with the extra boost.
What bottom end mods are you planning to cope with the extra boost.
ARP rod bolts.
Also ARP head studs and probs some stiffer valve springs and titanium retainers. Maybe some more head work.
This VR6 better have 24 valves.
This VR6 better have 24 valves.
isn't the mk3 vr6 12 valves sorry if i got wrong end of stick!
12v. Just a bit of fun. Swap the 1.8t back in if I want to, if I even put the vr in my car.
I want to put the vrt in a cab tbh
12v VR6 seems like a step backwards when you've done so much of the work for a mk4 engine conversion :undecided: Can't blame you for wanting a cabrio though. There's one that I pass every day the same colour as my Vento and I want it so bad. On air with a VR6 :lipsrsealed:
^^^ Oooh a mk4 front.... what are those wheels!?

What we cal a Mk 3.5 Cab.
Its still a Mk3 underneath but has Mk4 panels
Mazdaspeed MS02 - They are lush.
Think they'd look better on the mk1.
I meant a 12v VR6 into your Golf would seem a tad silly when so much of the work needed for a mk4 engine is already done from the 1.8T swap. Putting a VR6 into a Cabrio is awesome though
Oh yeah, there's nothing silly about the idea. I've no doubt that if anyone on the forum was going to undertake the task and complete it that it would be you. Just saying that your golf has most of the work for a mk4 engine conversion done, so why not try the 24v VR6 instead of the 12v?I meant a 12v VR6 into your Golf would seem a tad silly when so much of the work needed for a mk4 engine is already done from the 1.8T swap. Not really a 400-500bhp VRT would a great laugh!
Your looking at it wrong though, nothing is a "silly idea", its a bit of fun.
I'll be talking to a few peeps over here soon about the engine. Done a lot of research online, but the guys over here love it and know a lot about it.

But a charged 24v V6 does sound lots of fun!!!

Cause I have a 12v VR6 sitting doing nothing. Its no hassle going from a Mk4 engine to a Mk3 engine. I haven't done anything Mk4 specific for the 1.8t, just 1.8t specific stuff which isnt diffcult to remove and put back later.
Not really a 400-500bhp VRT would a great laugh!
Witnessed both and defo supercharger for pure orgasm noise :D
Super charger ftmfw ll!! :D

Again?...
IanGTI is breaking his charged VR6, all ready for you and just flog on your current engine.
I think LL has more of a DIY until I die thing going on.
I think LL has more of a DIY until I die thing going on.
That's true, he wouldn't do BiTurbo, he would do supercharger and turbo!
Twin turbo for the difficult win.
Twin turbo for the difficult win.
Single large turbo is a better bet, you would need small turbos due to space reasons and you would struggle to get enough boost.
Or two big ones with a notched bonnet? Lol.

is this fast and furious
Twin turbo for the difficult win.
Single large turbo is a better bet, you would need small turbos due to space reasons and you would struggle to get enough boost.
twin turbo would be better as they would be smaller.. less stress on the turbo's.. running less boost.. and then less lag.. so better throttle response no ??
I think you should convert it and dump the engine in the boot for RWD!!That coupled with a body kit with fook off scoops on the side for air intake!

Is that a gold bay with a purple engine?
Will do mate cheers. What do you use to set your tracking? Mines off, but I loath to spend 50 odd quid at Gupa P for those cowboys to do it!
Loving the new Sig mate! I'll have to pop down and have a butchers at the old beast sometime!

I cut mine a long time ago, but its starting to grow back but im cutting it very soon!
Haha, that was a funny day! Sucks that the one RR day goes in the mag, I get the worst figures I've had lol.
Dont know if I posted it up, but I will do. My last RR day a few weeks ago. Rolled 235bhp. So still going well!
Yeah course man :)
Glad to see this thread back up there again dude ;)
Also, got some new rims on there way. In need of a mega refurb and there jap crap but I reckon they'll look sexy. Oh and there 3 piece splits.

im guessing i missed something but why is it matt black now when you paid for the blue respray not so long ago?
Hm, Gotis?
You've missed something along te way.
Self-adjusting cable working right?
Actuator moving when you tread the pedal?
Release bearing in right?
Gear selector all selecting correctly?
Re-check the duh things first and move from there.
I think you spent too long in the USA and came back a bit stoopid.
Actuator doesn't move, that's the problem! That's we took the box off to check everything was OK.

Either the pin's fallen off the actuator inside the box, or the self-adjusting cable isn't.
The pin is in place, I'm reckoning selector forks? Cable is manually adjusted.

Oh yes - you have gearbox-grenading output levels.
I'm guessing you didn't find/fix the problem then?
Looking nice dude! What are your plans for these? Colour, tire sizes etc....
Love what you have done with the car mate looks amazing
Iv also sent you a PM mate

Love this car!
Ahh was going to drop you a text again the other day to see how things were progressing, seems as if they are doing alright!
Any future plans for it?
Looking good mate! :afro:
30mm in one go is a bit drastic, why not try it in say 10mm increments?
Why do you need a 'cool' look when your running a turbo'd engine up front?
'cool' looks are for low and slow cars, this should be put at a hight so you can keep the loud peddle planted instead of worrying if there's an ant in the road IMO...
I don't really worry at this height as such. Sump is welded up and has 10mm plating; been hit and scraped and its fine. Subframe is ok as its not been fitted long and nothing else is really a worry. I just don't like the way the geometry of the suspension is, but I'm sorting that out.
I'm going away thursday, so hopefully if I can get time, I'll bring the back up that 10mm and see how that feels. Then buy/fit new droplinks. Next step will be ball joint extenders and flip track rods. Then I'm hoping it will feel a million times better, otherwise the next step will be to RAISE IT!

You're going away again? Where to now?
How is that VRT build coming along? Knowing you, slow?
I reckon best bet is to raise your strut towers on the front. That way you can have muchas suspension travelingdings.
Top job, does it feel any better at the back now its up a bit?
How did you get hold of the etka printouts?? Did you ask for specific pages? and how much did they charge for em? May be worth getting a few I think................

Just go into dealer ship and ask I guess...that's what I did for the gear linkage
but 30 pages might not be a freebie!
Good work!
That ETKA stuff looks interesting!
just catching up on this thread, those wheels look wicked, when you getting those on pal ?
just catching up on this thread, those wheels look wicked, when you getting those on pal ?
Hopefully soon mate, just taking my time doing them at home. Think they are 7J and 8J and with the adaptors they should sit nice in the arches.
Not keeping the polished dish and looking at getting some socket head bolts.
I hate car bras but that actually looks ok on yours due to been the same kind of colour and texture.

Edit; Scrub that mate, just seen the thread for the meet at the end of May.

Agreed, looks loads better :afro:
Bit tame! I was expecting something a bit more flash! Think I'm disappointed.

Sounds good matey
Deffo go for the integrated rods like u mentioned in my thread too
Yea mate I wasnt being critical, was just not what I expected of the LL style!
But as you say the wheels will probably change things like they do on mine.
that looks so good mate. well done keep it going
That's looking f**king class Alex. Keep it up and can't wait to see the finished car.
Looks good. What happens with the shuts? Do they get covered?
Favourite.
How long is a wrap supposed to last?

Them hella reds are   i need a set myself
wish I could be arsed to do this to mine! we'll see how my latest respray goes
looking  as always man, though I did like the matt black
looks good mate brilliant skills
Give it a go, once you understand the way in which it needs to be applied with certain angles/curves, etc its not hard. Good vinyl really really really helps.

Maybe it will be vinyl next time! Just bought myself a gun and all the paint etc so need to at least give that a go first though
Looking awesome mate!!!
Hella all reds ftw!!!!
Fcuk me sideways and call me Charlie, is really has taken off!
Love the colour too, looks awesome! Didn't realise you were so talented!
I always knew this boy was talented!
Still reserving judgement til I see the finished article though!
5 years weathering??... That should be fine then as knowing you, you will only need 5 months!
LL. that sh1t is sick! loving the colour. only if you was close id give you my spoiler to wrap
If Shady likes it, it probably isn't that cool..

There's a thing that this country uses for thing like that, I can't for the life of me remember what it's called but it allows people to send letters and packages around....what was it.... :grin:If Shady likes it, it probably isn't that cool..
Says the man that bought my polished alloys. Good one. :afro:
Alex, I love this, will have to meet up soon so I can see!
Not checked in on this thread for a while, but simply
Loving the colour, loving the all reds, loving the skills! Makes me want to be back in a MK3. Cannot wait to see it finished!
Just needs a nice set of wheels to finish it off now.
How is it working out cost wise compared to a full respray in that colour and how durable is it going to be.

I'm curious on this also...
It's a shame how much wrap appears to get wasted on certain parts but I suppose that's the price you pay to avoid any splits or joins.
Looks fantastic though and the finish of the job looks spot on in the pictures... :afro:
SICK SICK SICK! I have definitely gotta come see this when its done :)
Whats the proper way of looking after a wrapped car in regards of keeping it clean, shiny etc?
How about stone chips?
True, but it is quite thin!
I mean if a stone hit a stretched area then maybe the vinyl would kinda open up?
True, but it is quite thin!
Take off the wrap one day which appears fine but there are more chips on the paint than what you started with!
I was thinking more of it ripping, I mean if a stone hit a stretched area then maybe the vinyl would kinda open up?
That is a good question! Probably the weight of the interior card for the boot? Good job I removed it!
I think it look amazing and a fresh approach to modifying on a budget.
That my kind of recognised units :D
That looks really good mate, top effort!
nice work mate looking sweet
That looks so much better  respect to you for the work that has taken.
Looking great Alex :)
Apart from looking like it can't go round corners, I must say it looks phenomenal. Colour looks great, finish looks great and I'm now curious as to what your plans ate with the Borbets.
Did you run into any trouble other than that bit of arch? Trapped dirt, panel that wasn't as straight as you thought it was etc?...
I must be getting old, first thing I thought was the about cornering too
I think it could do with a discrete backbox?
Other than that its looks ace
Looks good but what about the wheels?
Ah hells yeah that looks aweosme dude!!
sh!t that is low tho  I like it :afro:
I personally would have left the morretes and side trim black but thats just personal preferance!
What kind of proper suspension are you thinking of?
FK's or Wietecs?

Venom coilovers. Not air! :D
Don't really see how running coiloverrs as low as most of us do the more expensive makes would be a different. Let's be honest we all run them that low for the look, not because we want them to handle well
I wouldn't run the new ones low, they don't go low! Would fit them with new wheels (which will have normal size tyres), and should transform the car's handling from what it is now.

Its only taken 283 pages to get that comment! :D
Careful, you ain't got there yet.
Get some Bilstein B6 struts and Eibach springs instead and I'll drive to Plymouth and shake you by the hand.
Coming to Germany next year then?
Interesting finish... look good though, could be a bit of dirt trap though.
Interesting finish... look good though, could be a bit of dirt trap though.
Well the dimples are black, kinda. Its hard to explain and the picture doesn't really show it that well. Its like an antique copper. Seen it a few years back, loved it and now I finally used it! Just hope I can sort out the bottom flange, don't wanna risk putting them together and them leaking, but don't wanna be taking the flange back to metal
The wheel centres look awesome man! Best to send them back if you are not completely happy or have any doubts about them sealing correctly though :/
The wheel centres look awesome man! Best to send them back if you are not completely happy or have any doubts about them sealing correctly though :/
I just need to bring the flange back to metal. Got a couple ideas. Then I'm just waiting on the dishes!
Coz its not just painted, has a dimpled surface!
Can't risk sealing onto the painted surface, if the paint hasn't adhered to the surface 100% then it won't be sealed properly. Just going to run around it with a grinder pad, back to metal. Its easy to do and worth it for sure.
Dishes are being polished and clear coated :)
I'm in no rush to get them done anyway :)

No biggie mate, already on tings :)
Should have a big update tomorrow or Wednesday. 20 hours of work in 2 days, a new car and everything getting wet.....
This is not the update i was hoping for
Fook me.... Glad your okay. Fooking good job with the work on that lot though!!!
Vinyl held up well!
Doesn't look like even a crack in the vinyl
Stunning time pressure work! Sad end to the 5 door but onwards :)
Car is totalled. Rolled it off the motorway on Wednesday 22nd August:
Back end kicked out under heavy braking and that was that. I was fine, apart from being stung by nettles.
I did tell my mates its the most likely cause of the crash!
If you lower your car you are automatically screwing with your brake balance and this should be addressed at the same time without fail.
If you lower your car you are automatically screwing with your brake balance and this should be addressed at the same time without fail.
I don't think there was ever a bias valve/compensator in this car.
Seeing as I currently don't know the weather my ABS is working as I have a wrong coding fault and the block connector behind the dash light has been cut off and removed, this will be first on my list of priorities once the engine is back together and the car is back on the road. Although its just metal, I NEVER want my car to end up like this one.
At the very least some people might look at this and then sort their own cars out.

Good to meet you today bud and i'll watching where things go with the new ride..
Cheers bud....who's Absy?.....was that the guy with the r32 mk3 ?? or his daughter?...don't think i spoke to his daughter.....
Nice blue bonnet!
Respray?
Bit difficult on the cab roof?

Looking good mate :)

Cheers buddy. Have to try and make it to our next meet! Should have more progress on the cab by then :)
Awesome! What are you picking up?
Nice swag of parts bud! I need to pick up a twin fan slam panel ay some point! is the rad bigger as well?
Nice swag of parts bud! I need to pick up a twin fan slam panel ay some point! is the rad bigger as well?
Yeah VR rad is a tad bigger than the 16v but not by much. I figured its easier to use the whole lot, including rad.
Filled up works van yesterday with 3.5 cabby parts :D
Will be taking it all out and going through it this evening.

Sweet. I thought the Cabrio rear benches had a curved top section.
Interior will look ace fitted
Those Dishes <3 <3 <3 This is gonna look sick with those on and everything all wrapped!
Dude even with the body work how it is it still looks awesome!!
Looking forward to seeing it with rims and wrapped :afro:
Bet that's a mission getting the bumpers back to black plastic. Or does it wash off easy because of the type of paint?
Love the colour
Been a while since I've seen this. Last I saw was you just starting out with the cab. You certainly haven't wasted any time!... Great turnaround and looking pretty damn fine already. Is that wrap pearlescent? Seems to have a really nice finish to it.
How come you wrapped the front bumper before removing the upper purple painted section, surely youve just made hard work for yourself?
Wicked!!!! Looking good mate
Another great job, not my kind of colour but it still looks great.
Try to keep it on the road a bit a longer this time. :lipsrsealed:
Does this one have a rear compensator fitted to the braking system?
Or is it ABS?
Your previous problems could have been avoided if you'd had fat birds in the back at the time, you know.
I haven't touched the rear brakes as of yet! Still rolling drums! So yes, its all standard and I have checked this! I have looked over the car and so has my VW specialist friend. Doing everything to keep this one safe and bodge free, safety for the little man :)

The suspension isn't and it's considerably lower than it was when standard, so if this car hasn't got ABS and has a compensator, it must be adjusted as currently you are potentially in a similar situation as before.

Wot he said. Discs shouldn't make any difference - it's to do with the ride height - as it goes down the compensator opens and allows more force on the rear brakes. Check to see if the disc part number is different to the drum one though - the percentage limitation might change disc vs drums.Doing everything to keep this one safe and bodge free, safety for the little man :)
Are you referring to yourself as the 'little man' or have you some some bird up the duff?
Wagon tdi at that
Like! :cool:Cheers.
Thanks buddy defo think I wanna have a go!!!!Just take your time, be fine.
Love it :smiley:Thanks buddy :)
