as someone who has to diagnose faults on the entire VAG range on a daily basis, i'm inclined to agree with the OP.

although there's far less to go wrong on a nice mk1 GTI

Neither of these are mk6s.
Though Chuff is quite correct, mk5's do rust like mk1s.

No go and moderate yourselves you two for going off topic.

If you are not too fussed about the sportier spec of the GT TDI, I reckon the Match is the best all rounder of the bunch. I had a 1.6 TDI BMT manual for around 3 weeks, and have to say, as a tool to get you about, it's a bloody good car. RCD 510, Bluetooth, Parking Sensors, Cruise, Auto lights and wipers etc all as standard.

I do prefer my GT TDI over all tho'. The slightly lower ride height, sparkley Vancouvers, front fogs that wink and privacy glass, sadly get me taking a glance at it at every opportunity. I do wish I had bought a DSG tho' and bugger what my wife wanted.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

The GT 140 is definitely a great car but not the cheapest. Mine was around £21,500 3 year ago and not a kick in the ass off a GTD price.  I only went for the GT as it had a special PCP deal which the GTI / GTD didn't.
